How the UAW’s win may change the South
  + stars: | 2024-04-23 | by ( Nathaniel Meyersohn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
Now, the United Auto Workers has dealt a serious blow to that model: winning a landslide union victory after decades of failing to unionize automakers in the South. It’s the UAW’s first win in trying to represent workers at a foreign car manufacturing plant in the South. Before Friday’s win, the highest profile union election held in the South in recent years was the attempt to organize Amazon warehouse workers in Alabama in 2022. Bill Lee in 2019 visited Volkswagen’s plant in Chattanooga to encourage workers to reject the union, and former South Carolina Gov. But the Volkswagen win, said UAW President Shawn Fain to CNN, shows that politics are not an insurmountable obstacle when it comes to organizing in the South.

Republican presidential candidate, former U.N. Former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley lost Nevada's Republican presidential primary to "none of these candidates," NBC News projected. Haley was the only Republican candidate on the ballot Tuesday, but she was not the only choice on the ballot. Behind the state's primary-plus-caucus schedule this year is a rift between Nevada's Republican Party and its Democratic-controlled state legislature. But the Nevada Republican Party opposed the change, and it opted instead to hold its own caucuses and effectively ignore the primary.

Biden stands as the overwhelming favorite to win the South Carolina primary against comparatively weak opposition: U.S. Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota and Marianne Williamson, an author who ran unsuccessfully in 2020. In drawing up the official primary calendar, Democratic officials put South Carolina first. Biden hopes to win South Carolina by a whopping margin, which might infuse his candidacy with more energy and help deflect attention from his low standing in public opinion polls. A total of 55 delegates are at stake Saturday in South Carolina. South Carolina Democrats want a huge turnout to justify the party's decision to bump the state to the front of the line.

New York CNN —Looming over the United Auto Workers strike: Automakers’ continued migration to the anti-union South. Jobs at nonunion EV battery facilities pay less than the roughly $32 an hour that veteran UAW workers make. Since 1990, the South’s share of auto jobs has doubled from around 15% to 30% today, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. Mostly nonunion EV jobs and manufacturing investments are surging in Southern states led by Republicans. The South has picked up 66% of planned EV jobs, while projects in Midwestern states such as Michigan, Indiana, Kansas and Ohio have combined for 26% of planned jobs, according to S&P Global.

Aspen Tucker, 29, has been working as a travel nurse since earning his associate's degree in 2020. In 2022, two years after becoming a travel nurse, Tucker brought home about $187,000 for the year, per CNBC. On average, travel nurses make about 50% more than staff nurses due to high demand. Travel nurses get a living expense stipend and a housing stipend, which are considered reimbursements, not income, she said. While under contract, travel nurses have health insurance, but not when they're between jobs.
"I absolutely love living in Spartanburg and being a travel nurse. I'm able to have a high salary as a travel nurse, but come back to where the cost of living is low." REUTERS/Toya Sarno Jordan/File PhotoNEW YORK, Feb 21 (Reuters) - Rio Tinto on Tuesday said it would supply BMW with aluminum it produces in Canada using hydroelectric power, lowering the auto manufacturer's carbon footprint with respect to its procurement of the automotive metal. The UK-based mining company and the German automaker announced in separate statements that they had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for Rio Tinto's hydro-powered operations in Canada to provide a BMW production plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, with an unspecified amount of aluminum starting in 2024 -- a move that "could generate a reduction of up to 70 percent in CO2 emissions compared to the BMW Group's benchmark for aluminum," according to Rio Tinto. "The agreement to supply low-carbon aluminium" is also aimed at "ramping up our use of aluminium with no direct CO2 emissions from the smelting process," wrote Joachim Post, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, which is responsible for its purchasing and supplier network. PREVIEWDave Edwards, the chief executive at Greenville-Spartanburg, said just over a decade ago his airport had no international air cargo operations. BMW today accounts for about a quarter of Greenville-Spartanburg’s roughly 15 international cargo flights a week. Air cargo volumes fell through most of last year as manufacturers and retailers pulled back on orders because of slowing consumer spending. Rockford, about 70 miles from Chicago O’Hare International Airport, has become one of the most successful regional airports for cargo. It is a hub for United Parcel Service Inc. and has attracted air operations for companies including Amazon.com Inc., DSV and A.P.
