A hurricane watch has been issued for the Cayman Islands: Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac. Potential Tropical Cyclone Eighteen is forecast to become a tropical storm as it approaches Jamaica by Monday, with hurricane conditions possible in the Cayman Islands Tuesday into Wednesday. “This system is expected to become a tropical depression tonight and steady strengthening is forecast,” the National Hurricane Center says. Regardless of tropical storm development, this system will bring very heavy rain, tropical storm-force winds, storm surge, and high surf to Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and southern Cuba over the next several days. Flooding could occur over portions of Jamaica and Cuba, with mudslides possible,” the National Hurricane Center says.

In addition to this, our teams are joining the local taskforces to try to restore the most basic services and bring further supplies to Spruce Pine,” The Quartz Corp said in a statement. The Quartz Corp facility near Spruce Pine, North Carolina, is seen during a CNN flyover of the area on Monday, September 30. And while quartz is abundant around the world, the kind of ultra-high-purity quartz mined in Spruce Pine is not. The Spruce Pine mines provide an estimated 80% to 90% of the world’s high-purity quartz — experts say the exact amount is proprietary and unknown — supplying semiconductor manufacturers like chipmaking giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. However, Wang said that despite the scale of the devastation in Spruce Pine, there is still reason for optimism.

The Florida Supreme Court issued a separate ruling on Monday that could energize Democrats’ efforts to hold Trump to account on abortion. The ex-president has long been wary of taking a definitive stand against abortion rights. But some Republicans are infringing the spirit of the Supreme Court ruling – which sent the issue back to individual states – by pushing for a national ban. And Democrats believe they have an issue, in abortion rights, that could thwart him – despite Biden’s own unpopularity. Democrats are delighted since they have had considerable success in using ballot initiatives to protect abortion rights or reject further restrictions.

A new accounting shows that at least 523 institutions were part of the sprawling network of boarding schools for Native American children. ‘War Against the Children’ The Native American boarding school system — a decades-long effort to assimilate Indigenous people before they ever reached adulthood — robbed children of their culture, family bonds and sometimes their lives. “The government was not done with war, so the next phase involved war against the children,” said Mr. Sherman, 83, a former aerospace engineer. Now 76, his voice grows shaky when he recounts the punishments children received — and how children were turned into punishers. Library of Congress, Chronicling AmericaA precise accounting of how many children died at Native American boarding schools remains elusive.

New York CNN —First Horizon and TD Bank have called off a $13 billion deal that would have formed America’s sixth-largest bank, adding to the turmoil sweeping the country’s regional lenders. But regional banks have been losing the confidence of investors and customers since the March collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank. On Monday, a third regional bank, First Republic, failed and JPMorgan purchased most of its assets. Other regional bank stocks have tumbled in recent days after First Republic’s failure. Customers had been moving their money to bigger banks, leaving some regional banks without the cash they need to pay for withdrawals.
I'm Matt Weinberger, deputy editor of Insider's tech analysis team, filling in for Diamond Naga Siu. Is it time for CEOs to start losing their jobs? Ed Zitron argues for Insider that the thousands of tech workers who lost their jobs in recent months are actually just taking the fall for the real problem in Silicon Valley — CEOs who aren't up to the task of leadership. He praised the CEOs of Apple and Intel for recently taking pay cuts as their companies hit tougher times. Late Friday afternoon, a federal jury officially ruled that the Tesla CEO's infamous "funding secured" tweet didn't harm shareholders, making him not liable for damages.

Reuters, part of Thomson Reuters Corp (TRI.TO), competes with Dow Jones.
