Every effort the president and his White House and campaign teams make to fix the problem end up exacerbating it. She said that while Biden had a cold at the debate, he hadn’t taken medication but was now feeling better. But she declined to go beyond Biden’s already released annual physical results that found him fit for duty in February. Democratic Sen. Opinion | The Rise of Progressivism Among the Educated Elite

To the Editor:Re “The Sins of the Educated Class,” by David Brooks (column, June 7):Mr. Brooks’s insightful column omits one problem. Many “elite” parents and students have never really interacted with “real” average Americans. Don’t only blame the students for their attitudes and behaviors; they are built into our societal structure. Current scholars at elite schools are deprived of the great daily lessons and educational opportunities that I had. Those who take advantage of such experiences would benefit greatly, and so would the country.

Marian Robinson, Michelle Obama’s mother and a linchpin of the Obama family who moved into the White House and provided stability and care for the family’s two young daughters during a tumultuous time in Washington, died on Friday. Her death was announced in a statement by Ms. Obama, former President Barack Obama and other members of the family. The statement did not give a cause, or say where she died. Raised on the South Side of Chicago, Ms. Robinson was known as a loving, tough-minded matriarch who was never fully comfortable with the trappings of the White House, but who helped care for the Obama girls, Sasha and Malia, while their parents were on the road. “Just show me how to work the washing machine and I’m good,” she would say, the Obamas said in their statement on Friday.

How a Tiny Chicago News Organization Won 2 Pulitzers

When Jamie Kalven met Yohance Lacour in 2017, the two men quickly realized they had something important in common. Mr. Kalven, the founder of the Invisible Institute, a nonprofit Chicago newsroom, was working in Chicago’s Stateway Gardens housing development in 1997 when a vicious hate crime wounded the community there deeply. And Mr. Lacour helped a local newspaper cover that story at the time. Mr. Lacour’s podcast won one of two Pulitzers this year for the Invisible Institute, a small, crusading newsroom on Chicago’s South Side known for holding city authorities to account. The other prize, for local reporting, went to the organization’s data director, Trina Reynolds-Tyler, who reported an investigative series on missing Black girls and women in Chicago.

CNN —A couple of African paradise islands have been on the radar of avid world travelers for some time. Shellfish Bay on the island’s windward side shelters one of East Africa’s most spectacular beaches, a crescent of white sand framed by 100-meter dunes. As a result, an unfortunate nickname has even been given to these tourists: “geisha paparazzi.”Foreign tourists have sometimes struggled to understand Japanese customs and etiquette. In 2015, Kyoto created pamphlets and paper handouts that used pictograms to illustrate travel “nuisance activities” like littering, using selfie sticks, smoking in prohibited areas, and taking photos of geisha and maiko. Plenty of rules, little enforcementToday, signs in three languages also explain that geisha photography is not allowed without a permit, and that violators could be charged up to ¥10,000 ($67). Most maiko and geisha (these words are both singular and plural in Japanese) use this road, making it the prime spot for “paparazzi” to gather.
