Severe fire danger for Australia as temperatures smash records
  + stars: | 2020-11-29 | by ( Reuters Staff | ) www.reuters.com sentiment -0.99   time to read: +1 min
SYDNEY (Reuters) - Parts of Australia, including Sydney, sweltered through the hottest November night on record with temperatures likely to stay high on Sunday, prompting authorities to issue a total fire ban. Sydney CBD surpassed 40 degrees Celsius (104 F) on Saturday while swathes of western New South Wales, South Australia and northern Victoria baked through even higher temperatures nearing 45 degrees. Temperatures are expected to cross 40 degrees for a second straight day on Sunday while the Bureau of Meteorology has predicted a five or six-day heatwave for parts of northern New South Wales and southeast Queensland. The predictions for soaring temperatures prompted the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) to say demand may exceed supply in New South Wales on Sunday afternoon. The Rural Fire Service issued a total fire ban for most of eastern and northeastern NSW for Sunday, saying there was a “very high to severe fire danger forecast” as hot, gusty winds exacerbate dry conditions.

NSW has since notched a month without any COVID-19 cases where the source is unknown and restrictions on arrivals from Sydney will be eased on Dec. 1, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said. AstraZeneca said its COVID-19 vaccine, cheaper to make, easier to distribute and faster to scale-up than its rivals, could be as much as 90% effective. Australia has reported more than 27,800 cases of COVID-19 and 907 deaths since the pandemic began, but estimates there are fewer than 100 active COVID-19 cases remaining, mostly people in hotel quarantine. Qantas, meanwhile, said it will insist in future that international travelers have a COVID-19 vaccination before they fly, describing the move as “a necessity”. Australia closed its international borders in March and currently requires returning travelers from overseas to quarantine for two weeks.

REUTERS/Sandra SandersMELBOURNE (Reuters) - South Australia was on track on Saturday to end its hard COVID-19 lockdown three days early, recording only one new infection, while other states marked weeks of no new cases or deaths related to the novel coronavirus. “We are not out of the woods yet,” South Australia Premier Steven Marshall said at a televised press conference. New South Wales, the most populous state where about a quarter of Australia’s 24-million population lives, marked two weeks of no new coronavirus cases. Compared to many developed nations, Australia has done far better containing the virus thanks to swift and strict measures.

A Whole Australian State Shut Down Because of a Takeout Pizza That Didn’t Exist

SYDNEY—Soon after authorities in South Australia state were told a man had contracted Covid-19 after buying a takeout pizza from a restaurant with an infected employee, they ordered more than 1.7 million people to stay at home. Schools were shut. Outdoor exercise was banned for six days. The state premier—worried by how quickly a virus outbreak had nearly spiraled out of control in neighboring Victoria state—asked the federal government to halt international flights into Adelaide, Australia’s fifth-biggest city by population.

HOW DID THE INFECTIONS BEGIN IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA? Another team reviewed the information obtained in the interview, but wasn’t satisfied with “the feeling they got from this”, South Australia Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said, speaking at the conference. ARE THERE ANY PENALTIES FOR THOSE MISLEADING CONTACT TRACERS? IS SOUTH AUSTRALIA OUT OF THE WOODS YET? The state’s chief public health officer, Nicola Spurrier, also warned that the number of cases in South Australia would rise over the next couple of days, though those individuals are already in isolation and are not a threat to the wider community.

SYDNEY (Reuters) - South Australia’s drastic six-day coronavirus lockdown was triggered by a “lie” to contact tracers from a man who tested positive and restrictions across the state are set to be lifted much sooner than first planned, authorities said on Friday. We now know that they lied,” Marshall told reporters. Stevens would not be drawn on the man’s likely motivation for misleading contact tracers. Home to about 1.8 million people, South Australia has recorded 25 cases from the latest cluster, linked to a returned traveller from the UK. The country as a whole has been relatively successful on containing the virus with only around 95 cases currently active.

Strict, six-day coronavirus lockdown begins in Australian state

Images on social media showed empty streets in Adelaide, the capital of South Australia state, on day one of the state-wide lockdown. Authorities have imposed the six-day lockdown to stamp out what the state premier described as a highly contagious outbreak of the coronavirus linked to a traveller who returned from Britain. South Australia’s lockdown casts a shadow on optimism about a strong and swift recovery for the country’s A$2 trillion economy ahead of Christmas, just as Victoria was coming out of its 112-day isolation. “Overall activity over the last fortnight picked up sharply around Australia as restrictions eased in Victoria and some (state) borders opened,” ANZ bank economists said. “The unfortunate outbreak in South Australia though could impact overall activity figures in the lead up to the holiday season.”

Australia's October jobs surpass forecast, unemployment ticks up
  + stars: | 2020-11-19 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com sentiment -0.91   time to read: +2 min
Australian jobs surged past all expectations in October led by an easing of virus restrictions in the second-most populous state of Victoria, though the unemployment rate still ticked up to 7.0% as more people went out looking for work. Economists polled by Reuters were predicting a fall of 30,000 with the unemployment rate rising to 7.2%. A six-day lockdown in South Australia also casts a shadow on broader recovery prospects. During Australia's national lockdown, from March to May, jobs fell 872,000. "Assuming the pandemic remains under control, most particularly that the current lockdown in South Australia snuffs out the outbreak there, the recovery should continue going into 2021."

Time is of the essence and we must act swiftly and decisively,” South Australia state Premier Steven Marshall said. South Korea, which eased social distancing rules last month, reported 313 new cases on Wednesday, the highest since August. DIFFERING MEASURESIn Tokyo, new daily cases hit a record 493.

Yen claws back ground as looming winter chills vaccine cheer

Japanese 10,000 yen and U.S. 100 dollar banknotes are arranged for a photograph in Tokyo, Japan, on Sept. 7, 2017. At 104.04 per dollar, the yen has recouped nearly two thirds of the steep losses it suffered last week after Pfizer announced it had developed a working Covid-19 vaccine. "But near-term sentiment may still get clouded by the harsh winter in the west because of the resurgence in COVID cases." "It's back to pondering short-term negatives vs longer-term vaccine positives, and that's creating volatility," ANZ analysts said in a note. In emerging markets, focus is on a Bank of Thailand meeting, though most economists expect rates to be kept on hold.
