How can someone that talented go more than four years without winning on the LPGA Tour? It's not about how many men Thompson beat over 36 holes. Golf is one of the few sports that allows for men and women playing together, and the PGA Tour is just now getting up to speed. Men and women compete for one prize (the women play from a shorter set of tees). There was chatter several years ago about combining the Tournament of Champions at Kapalua for winners from the PGA Tour and LPGA Tour.

SHANGHAI (AP) — American Solheim Cup player Angel Yin defeated top-ranked Lilia Vu on the first playoff hole to win the LPGA Shanghai tournament on Sunday for her first tour win. Both Yin and Vu finished at 14-under 274 on the Qizhong Garden Golf Club course forcing a playoff, where Yin made a birdie at the par-4 18th after Vu had narrowly missed her 20-foot birdie putt. It was 25-year-old Yin's first victory in her 159th start and she shared a warm embrace with compatriot Vu on her breakthrough win. Vu shot a 4-under 68, with six birdies and two bogeys, and was the clubhouse leader at 14-under, until Yin birdied the par-5 17th and then made par on the final hole to force a playoff. Two-time defending champion Danielle Kang of the United States shot 71 to finish five strokes back in a tie for 17th at 9 under.

Yin was tied with Maja Stark, who had a one-stroke lead after two rounds. Yin and Stark, who shot 70, had 12-under totals of 204 on the Qizhong Garden Golf Club course in the LPGA’s first return to China since 2019 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Pavarisa Yoktuan of Thailand bogeyed her final hole for a 69 and was a shot back in third place. Yin's 65 was her best 18-hole score since the third round of the 2021 Honda LPGA Thailand.

CNN —Lexi Thompson will make history when she tees off at the Shriners Children’s Open next week, becoming just the seventh woman ever to compete in a PGA Tour event. An 11-time winner on the LPGA Tour, the American received an unrestricted sponsor exemption to make the 132-player field competing for a $8.4 million prize purse at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas from October 12. The appearance sees the 28-year-old joins Babe Didrikson Zaharias, Shirley Spork, Annika Sörenstam, Suzey Whaley, Michelle Wie West and Brittany Lincicome as the only women to ever compete at a PGA Tour event. “I was inspired when they did it,” Thompson told the PGA Tour. Since the Ryder Cup began in 1927 there have been only two tied matches. There followed a series of terrifically close matches but only in 1989 at The Belfry did one finish level at 14-14 with Europe retaining the title having led 14-10 only to lose the last four singles. In cricket I think retaining the Ashes is a big thing. You have a completely new team, for instance, at the Solheim Cup, and they tied. Perhaps the best approach is that of US Solheim Cup captain Stacy Lewis, who reviewing the draw that was an effective defeat, decided to view it as a victory anyway.

CNN —Emily Pedersen made a stunning hole-in-one for Team Europe on a thrilling opening day of the Solheim Cup, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Team USA taking a 5-3 lead going into day two. That shot and the rest of the afternoon fourballs were just the tonic Team Europe needed after a difficult morning.

Chien has won three times on what is now the Epson Tour and twice on the Taiwan LPGA. Former U.S. Women's Open champion Yuka Saso (66) and Charley Hull of England (68) were five shots behind. This is Thompson's final event before the Solheim Cup in Spain on Sept. 22-24. U.S. Women's Open champion Allisen Corpuz had another 72 and missed the cut, along with fellow U.S. Solheim Cup player Cheyenne Knight, who had a 73. Linn Grant of Sweden shot 71 and missed the cut ahead of her Solheim Cup debut.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Ruixin Liu of China was still suffering from allergies that forced her to withdraw from the LPGA Tour event last week. Liu said she still didn't have a clear head for the opening round in Cincinnati and has no idea why she played so well. Thompson is having her worst year on the LPGA Tour but still made the Solheim Cup team through the women's world ranking. The LPGA Tour is coming off a week that delivered one of the biggest surprises of the year. She is a six-time winner on the Futures Tour but has never finished in the top 10 on the LPGA Tour in individual play.
