All three major averages closed higher for the week, driven by softer retail sales and consumer price data for April. And the data has been mostly good, with 78% reporting a positive earnings surprise and 60% delivering a positive sales surprise. But we will get earnings from three portfolio companies, including one of our two "own, don't trade" stocks. In the week ahead, three portfolio companies will report results, while it will be fairly slow for economic data, except for a couple of housing reports. Earnings : After a week without earnings from any Club stocks, we'll get three this coming week.

As a new meme frenzy unfolds in the market, traders are once again making bets in stocks with high levels of short interest. This activity could lead several companies to become the next targets of a short squeeze. A short squeeze happens when a stock price surges and forces those shorting the stock to purchase shares, or cover their shorts, to buy back stock and cut their losses. Another solar name, Maxeon Solar Technologies , has its short interest as a percent of float at about 45%. The Children's Place is another short squeeze target, as 70% of its floating shares are being sold short.

The Nasdaq Composite added 1.14% while the S & P 500 advanced 1.85% in a relatively quiet week of economic updates. Within the portfolio, Disney and Wynn Resorts released quarterly numbers; we took issue with the stock reaction to both reports. In the week ahead, earnings season continues — headlined by Walmart on Thursday — and inflation data will dominate the economic calendar.

Goldman Sachs thinks Maxeon Solar Technologies will see eye-popping gains despite the company's recent earnings disappointment. Analyst Brian Lee maintained his buy rating on the Singapore-based solar panel maker. He did lower his 12-month price target on the stock by $3 to $18, but that still implies shares can go up 195% from Wednesday's close. Shares of the solar company plunged 14% on Thursday, reaching a 52-week low, after Maxeon reported third-quarter results that missed analysts' expectations by a wide margin. But a positive catalyst for the stock going forward, Lee noted, is that Maxeon announced a settlement on Wednesday with residential solar technology provider SunPower .

Nearly a third of that renewable energy should come from wind and solar power, said the report by researchers of Berlin-based Agora Energiewende. In 2021, they had installed a total of just 11.9 gigawatts of solar energy and 1.5 gigawatts of wind energy. As of the end of 2022, the U.S. had installed capacity of more than 144 GW of wind power and 110 GW of solar photovoltaic power. The report calls for a “paradigm shift” to speed up the transition to wind and solar power. At the same time, power grids need to be upgraded to allow for the variability and unpredictability of wind and solar power, it said.
