CNN —Italian World Cup speed skier Jean Daniel Pession and his girlfriend, Elisa Arlian, died in a mountain accident in northwest Italy, the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) confirmed. “A terrible tragedy struck the world of winter sports and speed skiing in particular,” the federation said in a June 1 statement. “In a tragic mountain accident above Champoluc (Aosta), Jean Daniel Pession, a 28-year-old World Cup team member, lost his life. Together with Pession, his girlfriend also died,” FISI added. According to the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS), Pession finished 15th in the 2021 World Cup standings for speed skiing.

CNN —Two California hikers who went missing earlier this week on Mount Whitney have been found dead, authorities said. The Inyo County Sheriff’s Office dispatch received a call on Tuesday around 8:30 p.m. PT regarding the overdue hikers, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office on Thursday. “Tragically, both hikers were later discovered deceased” in Tulare County, California, the sheriff’s office stated in the release. CNN has contacted the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office for more information. Mount Whitney is the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States, according to the National Park Service.

Kobayashi flew through the air for around 10 seconds before delivering a smooth landing on Wednesday, video shows. “A ski flying competition must be based on a FIS-certified distance measuring system and take place on a ski flying hill homologated by FIS in order to stand up to comparison with other flights and be eligible for an official ski flying record,’ added the FIS. Austrian Stefan Kraft holds the FIS record for the longest competitive ski jump for a male after landing a 253.5m (831 ft 8.31 in) jump in Vikersund, Norway, in 2017. Even Whistler Blackcomb ski resort was only a two-hour drive from home — where the diverse terrain and charming village are world-famous and Winter Olympics-worthy for good reason. The ride in a private taxi to Niseko, Hokkaido took around two hours. Monica Laso boarded the gondola around 5 p.m. Thursday at Heavenly Ski Resort to ride down the mountain because she was too tired to snowboard. But it stopped just minutes later while she was still in the sky, she told KCRA, which first reported the news. “I screamed desperately until I lost my voice,” Laso told KCRA in an interview in Spanish. The ski resort, located on the southeastern side of the lake near the California-Nevada border, is investigating “with the utmost seriousness” how Laso got trapped.

CNN —Olympic ski jumper Patrick Gasienica died at the age of 24 on Monday, USA Nordic has announced. A GoFundMe page shared by USA Nordic, who confirmed his death Wednesday, said he died in a motorcycle crash returning from work. Gasienica, who was born in Mchenry, Illinois, represented the USA in his first Olympic Winter Games in Beijing 2022. He made his International Ski Federation (FIS) Ski Jumping debut in 2015, and went on to represent the United States at FIS Junior World Ski Championships in 2016 and 2017, and the 2019 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Seefeld, USA Nordic said in a statement published by U.S. “USA Nordic and the Ski Jumping community are saddened to hear about the passing of Patrick Gasienica,” USA Nordic said in a statement on Twitter.
