A New Zealand teenager sent thousands of scam texts using a fake cellphone tower before he was caught. It uses a so-called SMS Blaster to trick cellphones. The FBI and FTC have warned of rising smishing scams in the US. The Federal Trade Commission says that most "smishing" scams in the United States also involve people posing as banks. In 2022, the bureau warned that large-scale smishing campaigns delivered "hundreds, thousands, or even hundreds of thousands" of text messages in a matter of hours mimicking the IRS.

I then opened it on my laptop so I could click around and make sure it was actually the USPS. You know, that sassy department that sends you scathing emails warning you not to fall for phishing attempts.

June 28 (Reuters) - United Parcel Service (UPS.N) said on Wednesday it is working with law officials and outside experts following reports of phishing messages that were sent via text messages to certain shippers and their customers in Canada. The package delivery company did not disclose the number of customers and shippers impacted. "Law enforcement has indicated that there has been an increase in smishing (SMS phishing), impacting a number of shippers and many different industries," UPS said in an emailed statement. UPS said it was sending privacy incident notification letters to individuals in Canada whose information may have been impacted.
