Advertisement"Right now there's way too much confidence about the future trajectory of AI," Romer said. However, the economist argued there was not enough data available for the tech to keep progressing at the same pace. "It's just a lot of hype, the typical bubble hype where people are trying to cash in on the latest trend." Taken together, Romer and Kaltbaum see AI-linked stocks as hogging the market's gains — rightfully or not — and view the frenzy as a sign of problems ahead.

Even the roads are buckling, cracking and collapsing, as if in a slow-motion earthquake. And outside a small town called Batagay, deep in the Siberian hinterland, a crater is rapidly opening up — known to locals as the gateway to the underworld. Already more than half a mile deep and about 3,000 feet wide, the Batagaika crater is growing as the ground beneath it melts. The land is belching up the past and swallowing the present — creating a yawning hole even more dizzying than the huge open-pit mines that already scar the Siberian landscape. In Alaska houses in rural villages are sinking into the ground as the shoreline falls into the sea.

Burberry’s profit slumps by a third as sales in China plunge
  + stars: | 2024-05-15 | by ( ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
London — British luxury brand Burberry has reported a 34% drop in annual profit after sales fell sharply in China — its biggest market — in the final three months of last year. The company had previously warned that achieving its goal of taking the 168-year-old brand further upmarket, to become the definition of “Modern British Luxury,” had been harder than expected after demand for luxury had slowed. Sales fell 12% in the final quarter, dragged down by a 19% slump in China, and wiping out gains made earlier in the year, Burberry said Wednesday. Sales in London, its home market, declined 17%, which Chief Executive Jonathan Akeroyd blamed on a lack of tax-free shopping for tourists. The world’s largest luxury group, Louis Vuitton owner LVMH, also reported weak sales in its latest quarter as spending on luxury items slowed.

How Ozempic Is Changing Diabetes Treatment

Day in and day out, she carefully calibrated the doses needed to keep her Type 2 diabetes in check. “Every meal, and every morning and every night — it controls your life,” she said. In late 2021, she started on the diabetes drug Ozempic. She still uses a continuous glucose monitor to track her blood sugar, meticulously watching for slumps and spikes — but even as she took less insulin, she said, Ozempic has helped keep her glucose levels more under control. Millions of Americans rely on some form of insulin, a lifesaving drug that has long been a mainstay of diabetes treatment.

Paramount Global 's stock slumped 8% on Thursday after CNBC's David Faber reported the company would need to raise as much as $3 billion in new equity if it were to merge with David Ellison's Skydance Media, according to sources familiar with the deal. This deal comes as media mogul Shari Redstone, the controlling shareholder of Paramount, is said to be in exclusive talks with Ellison on selling her stake to him, according to Bloomberg. Faber said Ellison and his partners would likely step up to provide a good amount of that equity, but it would be dilutive. Redstone is looking to sell Paramount, as the company has been in talks with Warner Bros Discovery on its acquisition. The MTV and CBS parent company has a market capitalization of nearly $10 billion and about $13 billion of net debt.

While the Commerce Ministry meeting did not reveal much new progress on the 24 measures to support foreign business that were announced last summer, attendees said they were able to share specific challenges about doing business in China. The ministry said representatives from more than 60 foreign businesses and 9 associations attended Wednesday's roundtable. Foreign direct investment into China has fallen to its lowest level in three years, according to official data, amid geopolitical tensions and slowing growth in the country. Hart said that it's hard for companies not yet in China to complete due diligence and approve new investments. Biden, who faces re-election this fall, has emphasized the need to compete with China while finding areas of cooperation.

New York CNN —US markets broke a five-week winning streak last Friday after disappointing inflation data reignited economic and interest rate-related fears on Wall Street. Then last week, two key inflation indicators for January — the Consumer Price Index and Producer Price Index — rose above Wall Street expectations. Richmond Fed President Thomas Barkin said the new data showed that the Fed needs more confidence before cutting rates. I think in this case, the market isn’t necessarily telling you much about the economy’s fundamentals, the market is telling you what other market participants think. And I think that those economic fundamentals get you to the part that says, you know, it’s not not the economy.

London CNN —Israel’s output contracted sharply in the final three months of 2023, falling for the first time in nearly two years, as the war with Hamas takes a heavy toll on the economy. The conflict is expected to cost Israel around 255 billion shekels ($70.3 billion) by the end of 2025, equivalent to around 13% of GDP, according to the Bank of Israel. And earlier this month, Moody’s delivered Israel’s first ever credit rating downgrade, citing elevated political risk and deteriorating public finances stemming from the war. “Under a scenario of outright conflict… the negative economic impact would spread to more sectors and be longer-lasting,” Moody’s said. In 2023 as a whole, Israel’s economy grew 2%, according to the statistics office.

That sets the stage for a difficult road to recovery for whoever wins in a nation where no democratically elected prime minister has ever completed a full term in office. KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A federal lawsuit filed Friday says that a woman who died last February shouldn't have been discharged from a Tennessee hospital, forced to leave despite her pleas for more help and unassisted by security guards and police during a medical emergency. Security officers at the hospital called police Feb. 5, 2023, saying that Edwards had been evaluated and discharged, but she was refusing to leave. The lawsuit filed in Knoxville names three officers who were later disciplined by the city's police department, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel. But she is rebuffed by officers and hospital security guards who become frustrated with her inability to step up into the van and tell her she is faking her incapacity. “This was an emergency medical condition that began and worsened on hospital property and that was unequivocally preventable and treatable,” the lawsuit states.

As a multi-stage VC fund, Lightspeed has an advantage in its exposure to both early-stage and later-stage healthcare markets, Imanbayev said. And many later-stage healthcare startups still have plenty of room to grow, he said. The first one to three years are often slow-moving for a healthcare startup, too, as it works to get its first partnerships with payers or providers, he said. But they also tend to be less risky, since later-stage startups should have revenue streams or partnerships that demonstrate their value. Lightspeed led value-based care startup Aledade's $260 million Series F in June 2023, an unusually large deal as other investors cut much smaller checks.

Opinion | Is the Fed Falling Prey to Groupthink?

If you’re looking to argue that the Fed suffers from too much unanimity, the inflationary surge of 2022 looks like evidence. In speeches, various members of the committee had been expressing concerns about inflation, but they weren’t voting that way. She worked at the Fed for 25 years in stints between 1984 and 2022, including one writing up the minutes of Federal Open Market Committee meetings. Meade said one reason dissents are few is that “the meetings aren’t about today, they’re about tomorrow.” Committee meetings occur eight times a year. If a voter feels uncomfortable with the (unanimous) rate decision, that person will try to rally support for a different path at future meetings.

The Australian dollar held near a four-month peak while the New Zealand dollar scaled a roughly four-month top of $0.61495 in early Asia trade. Australian inflation data is due later in the day, followed by a rate decision from the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ). The dollar index was eyeing a nearly 4% loss for November, its worst monthly performance in a year. "We have become less constructive on the prospects for the U.S. dollar, as progress in reducing U.S. inflation suggests the risks are tilted toward earlier rather than later Fed easing," said economists at Wells Fargo in a note.
