PinnedTo its millions of devoted fans, the Eurovision Song Contest is a cultural juggernaut, an exciting competition in which singers and rappers represent their countries and perform for votes. To more casual observers, it’s simply a fun, camp — and often bewildering — night of TV, with extravagant songs and outrageous outfits. This year, as always, the contest features songs that range from the sublime to the ridiculous. Eden Golan, a 20-year-old pop star, will represent Israel with “Hurricane,” a ballad that obliquely references Israeli grief over the Oct. 7 attacks last year. Will Golan win over the audience and the tens of millions watching live on TV and YouTube?

Malmo CNN —The Eurovision Song Contest was thrown into fresh turmoil Saturday when organizers disqualified the Dutch entrant hours before the grand final for a backstage incident involving a female crew member. “Swedish police have investigated a complaint made by a female member of the production crew after an incident following his performance in Thursday night’s Semi Final. While the legal process takes its course, it would not be appropriate for him to continue in the Contest,” the EBU said. The EBU said the disqualification of Klein did not involve any other performer or member another country’s delegation. Tensions brew in Malmo ahead of finalThe alleged incident involving Klein happened on Thursday evening after the second semi-final, the EBU said.

Of all the designers who stepped off the fashion wheel during the pandemic-induced show hiatus, Hedi Slimane of Celine is one of the very few who has not returned to the same-old-same-old runway system. His last live women’s show was part of a dual-gender extravaganza at the Wiltern theater in Los Angeles in December 2022. The setting, it turned out, was effectively a very fancy architectural metaphor for what Mr. Slimane has been doing with the brand. He is building a wardrobe library: one that can be used by a variety of women, even if Mr. Slimane insists on showing it on anemic looking waifs. The video may have been entitled “Tomboy,” but it included an assortment of genres.

VACCARELLO’S DEBUT FOR Saint Laurent wasn’t as rapturously received as Yves Saint Laurent’s for Dior. “Anthony has been scrutinized and told his dresses were too vulgar or too sexy,” he says. At the beginning of his tenure at Saint Laurent, it sometimes seemed like Vaccarello was art directing someone else’s movie. Illuminated by the soft glow of chandeliers — a reference to the ballroom at Paris’s InterContinental hotel, the frequent site of Saint Laurent’s presentations — the women summoned the femmes fatales of Helmut Newton photographs. “Now that I’m a free man, I feel inclined to say that I think that what Anthony has done with Saint Laurent has been positively brilliant.

Editor’s Note: CNN Style is one of the official media partners of Paris Fashion Week and Haute Couture Week. Paris CNN —On Monday evening in Paris, American designer and Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) chairman Thom Browne debuted his first haute couture collection in front of an audience of 2,300. The scene was meticulously staged by Browne’s team, many of whom worked overnight. “I wanted to turn the tables (of a traditional couture show) and make everybody sit on the stage along with the show,” Browne told CNN. “We all want to be respectful to what’s going on here in France and in Paris,” Browne said.

A few men’s looks appeared on the runway at Celine’s fall/winter 2023 womenswear show, which summoned the indie-rock spirit of the early 2000s. LOS ANGELES—Hedi Slimane of LVMH fashion brand Celine waved his (skinny, black) magic wand Thursday night, transforming Los Angeles’s Wiltern Theater into a portal to the early 2000s. For his fall/winter 2023 womenswear show (which included some men’s styles), the brand’s creative lead sent 87 looks oozing with the debauched, indie-rock spirit of that period down the runway-cum-stage, set to a looped version of “Hello Operator” by the White Stripes, co-produced by the polymath Mr. Slimane himself. After the fashion show, the real show began: performances by Iggy Pop, Interpol, the Kills (as DJs) and the era’s ultimate mascots, the Strokes, now in their 40s.
