New York CNN —Starbucks is the latest entrant in the value menu wars, joining its rivals in releasing new offers to lure back cash-strapped consumers. The offer, available all day, comes in two options: For $5, a customer can order a tall iced or hot coffee or an iced or hot tea paired with a croissant. For Starbucks, it’s part of broader changes rolling out this summer, which include a new iced coffee blend, updated its app with more accurate ordering times and new promotions. Starbucks is also making tweaks to its two-year-old partnership with Delta Air Lines’ SkyMiles program, which lets customers earn miles on every transaction. Beginning Wednesday, customers will only earn miles on Starbucks account reloads of $25 or more rather than per dollar spent at its cafes.

Major airlines' bottom line depends on credit card companiesThe Credit Card Competition Act , which was introduced to Congress in June 2023 would require major banks to use at least one credit card payment network that isn't Mastercard or Visa — companies that control more than 80% of US credit card transactions — to introduce more competition into the credit card market. I visited a Delta Sky Club lounge at JFK Airport in NYC to see what it was like. As a Delta SkyMiles member in the Silver Medallion tier, I had access to a Sky Club lounge, an area with luxe-feeling seating, a buffet, and free WiFi. There are over 50 Delta Sky Clubs in airports across the US, all accessible with a membership or a Delta Reserve credit card. A Boeing 767 passenger aircraft of Delta airlines arrives from Dublin at JFK International Airport in New York as the Manhattan skyline looms in the background on February 7, 2024. Delta Airlines just became the latest airline to raise its checked bag fee — this time by $5 beginning Tuesday, according to the company. In a statement, the airline said the fee for both the first and second checked bag is increasing by $5 for most domestic and short-haul international routes. It will now cost travelers $35 for the first checked bag and $45 for the second checked bag. It's the first Delta baggage price increase since 2018, which the company said will help it stay on pace with rising industry costs.

Why checked bag fees are at record highs
  + stars: | 2024-03-02 | by ( Nathaniel Meyersohn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
Checked bag fees are hitting record highs as airlines up the ante. So an airline can save $75 million in tax fees off its $1 billion revenue in domestic checked-bag fees. The introduction of bag fees was also a response to the rise of low-price carriers like Spirit in the United States and Ryanair in Europe. But airlines kept the bag fees in place and even raised them in an effort to make up for the lost revenue from change fees. Bag fees have been a political punching bag.

New York CNN —Starbucks customers who use a Bank of America card will now get additional cash back for their purchases as part of a new partnership between the two companies. The expanded rewards are in addition to the existing cash back and stars that both companies already offer to customers. Expanding Starbucks Rewards gives the chain access to customers’ data and ordering habits, which in turn helps the company target members with deals, a stated goal for the company. In 2022, Starbucks partnered with Delta Air Lines to give bonus SkyMiles to registered customers. Starbucks members typically spend more money on each purchase compared to non-members.

NEW YORK (AP) — American Express rolled out several updates to its Delta SkyMiles credit cards Thursday that will give additional benefits to users, part of efforts to soothe sore Delta Air Lines customers who have considered abandoning the airline after last year’s SkyMiles loyalty fiasco. AmEx customers get access to Delta's airport lounges and are able to transfer their Membership Rewards points to Delta, among other benefits. To give a sense of scale, Delta CEO Ed Bastion told investors in June that roughly 1% of the entire U.S. economy is spend on Delta's credit cards. So, when Delta made alterations to its SkyMiles loyalty program last year, it was largely seen by Delta customers as a watering down of its program, and it caused turbulence between the two companies. Part of those changes required Delta customers to spend large sums of money on airfare or on the Delta credit card to be given elite status on the airline.

Elite status on airlines rewards big spenders with perks like complimentary upgrades and free checked bags. First things first: American Airlines isn't changing the requirements to earn elite status at the airline in the coming earning year. Loyalty programs were a lifeline for airlines during the Covid pandemic when travel slowed to a trickle. Carriers have been grappling with a surge in elite travelers, repeatedly increasing the requirements to earn status, and tweaking benefits. For customers striving for elite status, the airline will give them bonus loyalty points after they've earned 15,000.

United Airlines plans to make it easier for customers to earn elite status through co-branded Chase credit cards, the latest airline to tweak its lucrative frequent flyer program to reward big spenders. The airline isn't changing overall requirements for elite frequent flyer status next year, a first for the carrier since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Instead, United said Thursday that in 2024, it will reward customers with 25 qualifying points for every $500 they spend on co-branded cards. The carrier will also lift caps on credit card spending that can qualify toward elite status. Airlines reward their elites with perks such as free upgrades, when available; earlier boarding; and other perks.

In response to complaints from fliers, Delta is looking to make it less expensive to earn certain perks. Photo: David Zalubowski/Associated PressDelta Air Lines is making changes to its frequent flier program after it faced sharp backlash to changes it announced last month. CNN —Delta Air Lines is easing off some recent changes to its SkyMiles loyalty program that sparked criticism from frequent flyers. Fundamentally, Wednesday’s announcement keeps in place a significant overhaul announced just last month that transitioned the loyalty program from miles-based to spending-based. But the airline will make it easier for frequent flyers to reach certain rewards thresholds than the original changes. Last month, Delta CEO Ed Bastian pledged modifications to the program, but downplayed customer frustrations. Bastian said Delta gained so many elite status holders that demand for premium services, including lounge access at airports, overwhelmed the company.

The objections focused on the difficulty of achieving elite status and new restrictions on entering airport lounges. In simplifying the path to status, Delta sharply raised spending requirements for each SkyMiles level. The September proposal created a backlash among Delta customers on social media, with some threatening to switch to other airlines. JetBlue and Alaska Airlines tried to poach Delta's best customers by offering to match elite status for anyone leaving the Delta loyalty program. Southwest Airlines announced that next year it will make it easier to qualify for the top levels of its frequent-flyer program.
