Rich buyers have the funds to rebuild mansions that are more likely to survive future storms. Fort Myers Beach, Florida, has seen an influx of new buyers following Hurricane Ian last year. The storm killed 21 people and washed away a third of the homes and businesses located on the skinny sand strip that makes up Fort Myers Beach, many of which were modest, middle-class homes. Candy Rahn, 69, told the outlet she and her husband were forced out of Fort Myers after Ian when her uninsured cottage was destroyed. The wealthy companies and people who swoop in to buy up empty lots in Fort Myers Beach are in some ways helping disaster survivors by padding their pockets with thousands of dollars.

Twelve hundred tons of sand arrived last month in Hudson River Park, the sliver of green space on the western edge of Manhattan, and it took only a quarter-century to get there. George E. Pataki signed the law authorizing the creation of the park, he vowed it would have a beach. Now, on the 25th anniversary of the Hudson River Park Act — which turned a strip of dilapidated warehouses and rotting piers along the city’s mightiest river into a sprawling park network — West Siders will finally get to wriggle their toes in the sand. The beach is part of a larger effort to complete the park and knit together its disparate sections, which have been developed in bits and pieces over the years. The newest projects expected to open soon are Gansevoort Peninsula, a recreational area off Gansevoort Street that includes the beach as part of a $73 million overhaul, and Pier 97, a $47 million project off 57th Street that will have a big playground.

The presence of fancy ham in New York is not new. Local institutions like Estela, King, Ernesto’s, Carbone and those of the Momofuku group (where Pinsky used to cook) have long touted elevated cured pork to diners looking to pretend they’re vacationing in Europe. And there’s a $29 hot dog on the menu at Mischa, the chef Alex Stupak’s new restaurant in Midtown. Cured meat, there’s nothing more sophisticated.”“Consumers have gotten supersmart,” says Grant Reynolds, a co-founder of Pig Bar and Parcelle. “In fine dining, there’s talk about perception of value,” says Pinsky.

Thursday's wild stock reversal wasn't a bear market rally and could be the start of a new upswing, Anthony Scaramucci told CNBC. Sea level rise will flood huge swaths of the country and submerge billions of dollars’ worth of land, according to a new report. The analysis indicates that sea level rise could reduce the value of that private land by more than $108 billion by the end of the century. Risk isn’t evenly distributedClimate Central found that, unsurprisingly, the effects of sea level rise aren’t evenly distributed across the U.S. In Galveston County, Texas, more than 4,200 buildings that are currently above sea level will be at least partially underwater. While sea level rise is one of the major impacts of the climate crisis, it’s not the only one.

"Gossip Girl's" story seemed finished when the finale aired in 2012 — and the two-season reboot didn't add much. Blake Lively and Leighton Meester in "Gossip Girl." The CW"Gossip Girl" did not need a Max reboot 2021 — and apparently, the studio agreed because it got canceled after just two seasons in 2023. The questionable decision to make Dan "Lonely Boy" Humphrey the titular gossip aficionado made us question why there needed to be another Gossip Girl and a group of unlikable Upper East Siders — and I say this as someone who loved the original. The reboot's version of Gossip Girl — it was the teachers, for some reason?
