Reuters —A tourist from the Netherlands has defaced a frescoed wall in an ancient Roman house in Herculaneum, near Naples, damaging a building that survived the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, Italian police said on Monday. The police statement said the 27-year-old tourist was swiftly identified after staff at the archaeological site discovered tagged graffiti writing made with a black, indelible marker pen on a white section of a painted wall. The tourist, who was not named, faces charges of damage and defacement of artistic works. It is not the first time that historical monuments have been vandalised by tourists in Italy. In response to repeated acts of vandalism, Italy this year introduced tougher penalties on those who damage monuments and cultural sites, imposing fines of up to €40,000 (around $43,500) for those found guilty of defacing monuments.

Though inflation is cooling as of May 2024, prices remain high. Americans also have less in savings than a decade ago. As retailers entice shoppers with promotions and deals, consumers should be cautious about shopping on impulse if its an item they don't need.

All three infants were found alive and were quickly cared for, with the oldest two since being adopted, according to PA Media. Like her sister Roman, she was left in very cold January temperatures. Emodo had only this year brought on a new team to help it build AI-powered ad solutions for connected TV. The closure of Emodo marks the latest in a long line of telco-adtech collaborations that have bitten the dust. The incredible oblivion of Judge Marvin Isgur

On a mild Houston day in March 2021, Judge Marvin Isgur prepared to oversee the only case on his docket that morning. In October 2023, the Fifth Circuit Court rebuked Judge David Jones but said that his longtime colleague, Judge Marvin Isgur, had been "unaware" of Jones' inappropriate relationship. "But only Judge Isgur knows what he knew or didn't know about the relationship." Much of this work was in cases before either Judge Isgur or Judge Jones. Isgur can continue to hear the case, he ruled, writing in the December 2023 opinion that lawyers for the creditor "failed to demonstrate much other than that former Judge Jones and Judge Isgur are close friends."

The reason for that is mostly the American consumer, with spending accounting for about 70% of gross domestic product. At the beginning of the year, I was facing nearly $30,000 in credit-card debt. When December ticked into January, I knew it was time to face something I had been putting off: my credit-card debt. This compounded my stress about my credit-card debt. I had $5,000 in credit-card debt left after that, and I'm following my budget to pay that off. When my editor asked me to track all the ads I saw in a day, I wasn't sure how it would go. To personalize Google ads, for example, you can go to "My Ad Center" and opt to turn personalized ads on or off in the top-right corner. If you turn them on, Google will use the information it collects about you to give you more personalized ads. I decided to keep personalized ads off for Google because that's how I usually have it. However, when it came to deciding who to invite to this spring soiree, the mood got heavy in a hurry. I wondered if my son was becoming a mean kidMy plan was to invite the whole class just like we did the previous year, but when I mentioned this to my son, he was not on board. AdvertisementI asked him how he felt when he wasn't invited to an event and reminded him how important it is to always be kind. The kids in question didn't even end up attending the party, but that really wasn't the point. Next year, he still might not want to invite the whole class for his birthday so perhaps we pivot and also have an end of the year class party with everyone, an idea Edlynn suggested.

WHEN WOMEN RAN FIFTH AVENUE: Glamour and Power at the Dawn of American Fashion, by Julie SatowIn 1980, Donald J. Trump made the front page of The New York Times after assaulting a pair of scantily clad women at a Fifth Avenue department store. The sculptures’ significance was allegorical as well as architectural: Department stores, though erected mostly by men, have always been feminine domains. “The Ladies’ Paradise” is the English title of Émile Zola’s 1883 novel, set at a store modeled after Le Bon Marché, still standing in Paris despite the ravages of e-commerce. Patricia Highsmith framed her 1952 lesbian romance “The Price of Salt” at the fictional Frankenberg’s, based on Bloomingdale’s. Now Julie Satow has written a group biography of the department-store doyennes who ran the show — and these places in their heyday really were a form of theater — for the male founders and owners whose names adorned the facades.
