With the new Shopify Fulfillment Network , merchants can sign up to use Flexport's services through Shopify's app. The newly named Shopify Fulfillment Network is not merchants' only option for fulfillment. Former Deliverr and Shopify employees told Insider last week's layoffs at Flexport capped the end of a multiyear rollercoaster marked by multiple complicated acquisitions and integrations, compensation issues, and culture clashes. The integration of the Shopify Logistics team into Flexport had been rocky, five employees said. When Shopify completed its acquisition of Deliverr in July 2022, employees' equity converted to Shopify stock on a one-to-one basis. This person added that the conversion from public stock to RSUs meant that the value of their Flexport equity was less than they expected. The structure allows Shopify employees to decide the percentage of their compensation they want to be made up of cash and how much of stock.

Flexport employees are bracing for layoffs they believe could come as soon as Friday. Meanwhile on Slack, Flexport CEO and founder Ryan Petersen told employees "Get back to work people!" The comment, which was viewed by Insider, came in response to a set of questions an employee posed about executives' tips for success. Insider first reported that Flexport was planning layoffs on September 7, the day after its former CEO Dave Clark departed. The Wall Street Journal reported that Clark is preparing for a potential run for Texas governor, a topic he did not address in his statement. Clark joined the company as co-CEO in September 2022 after a long career at Amazon.com (AMZN.O). He became sole CEO in March, when founder Ryan Petersen became executive chairman. Clark, best known for building Amazon's sprawling warehouse and delivery network, said he was preparing to launch a Flexport product for small businesses on Thursday.

The challenges for small retailers in competing for sales are “almost always logistics and fulfillment,” said Aaron Brown, chief executive of Shopify Logistics. Shopify faces challenges, he said, in pushing into logistics services. Other companies, including retailers, have been seeking to market logistics services to other retailers, echoing Amazon’s warehousing and delivery operations through its Fulfillment by Amazon division. Apparel retailers American Eagle Outfitters Inc. and Gap Inc. offer fulfillment services to other merchants through their networks while Target Corp. and Walmart Inc. allow businesses to use their local same-day delivery services.

Shopify rolled out the latest iteration of its e-commerce logistics service Thursday. Shopify Logistics is a "port to porch" logistics service for even the smallest merchants. Flexport will allow Shopify merchants to get "front of the line access," to space on container ships they'd struggle to get otherwise, Brown said. Shopify rolled the badge, a direct competitor to Amazon's Prime shipping program and its newer "Buy with Prime" feature, out last year and expanded it to all Shopify sellers Thursday. A lot of e-commerce businesses with good products "flame out" because they simply can't hack the operations, Sauceda said.
