The recent announcement that Audra McDonald will be starring as Mama Rose in “Gypsy” has thrilled Broadway fans. I’m as delighted as anyone, and eager to catch the show when it opens in December. McDonald is the queen of American musical theater, and “Gypsy” is often considered the best musical ever (and if there were no “Follies,” it would be!). In the roles of Mama Rose’s two daughters, June and Louise, the show’s producers intend to cast actresses who, like McDonald, are Black. In other words, Rose isn’t just being played by a Black actress.

Pete McCloskey, a California congressman who raised a flag of rebellion against President Richard M. Nixon’s war policies in Vietnam with a spirited but futile race for the Republican presidential nomination in 1972, died on Wednesday at his home in Winters, Calif., west of Sacramento. His death was announced in a statement released on Wednesday by a family spokesman, Lee Houskeeper. Mr. McCloskey, who represented an area south of San Francisco for 15 years, from late 1967 to early 1983, was a liberal Republican who admired President John F. Kennedy, voted for environmental causes with Democrats and believed that the Republican Party had veered too far to the right. He had no money, party support or realistic prospects. Tens of thousands of Vietnamese and Americans were dying in a war that could not be won, he argued.

I just went on my first alcohol-free vacation and found that I enjoyed myself much more. I started drinking alcohol when I turned 21 and, with the exception of when I traveled during my pregnancies, every vacation I've taken since has involved alcohol. I enjoyed my trip so much more by not numbing out with alcoholTerri Peters enjoyed her alcohol-free vacation. I was taking the PATH train home to Hoboken from Christopher Street after a rehearsal when I noticed a bank of cameras aimed at the turnstiles. What a boring job it must be to have to stare at them all night long, I thought. There was no one else waiting on the platform so, on a whim, I decided to do a silly, Shirley Temple-esque tap dance to amuse whoever was monitoring the cameras. As I curtsied, I was startled to hear a series of slow claps coming from somewhere off in the darkness. Looking around, I saw that a young man had stepped out from behind one of the columns at the far end of the platform and was applauding.

When Ivy Berubes, 22, orders a Shirley Temple at the Sarapes Mexican Restaurant bar, they make it for her even though it’s not on the menu. The menu also doesn’t list “The Tommy Bowl” — a deconstructed burrito — but Tommy Agramonte, 20, gets to order it; after all, it is named after him. Located in Enfield, a quiet Connecticut suburb near the border of Massachusetts, Sarapes is owned and operated by the Chavez Mellado family, who immigrated from Mexico in the 1980s. “It’s one of the reasons why we’ve been able to maintain ourselves in this country,” said Adrian Martinez Chavez, the photographer for this story, whose grandparents Eduardo Chavez Solano and Cutberta Mellado de Chavez started the restaurant. When they come home to Sarapes, they can return to where they started.
