One out of 4 of the 31,000 homeowners in the coastal parish live there without homeowners insurance — one of the highest percentages in the United States. Across the country, 13.4% of homeowners — about 1 in 8 — are unprotected by homeowners insurance, according to an NBC News analysis of new Census Bureau data. It’s a double-edged sword.”The Census Bureau data shows how many homeowners pay less than $100 — or nothing at all — for homeowners insurance. According to the Census Bureau survey, which was taken in 2023, 20.8% of homeowners without mortgages also lack meaningful homeowners insurance. Among mortgage-holders, 8.5% don’t have meaningful homeowners insurance — and while banks require owners with mortgages to have homeowners insurance, gaps in coverage do happen.

Those most likely to say they were unprepared lived in the South (29%), the West (28%) and the Northeast (25%). While the majority of homeowners surveyed did have insurance, they don’t necessarily know whether it is adequate to cover the kind of extreme weather their area now faces. “Extreme weather has changed the insurance landscape, and understanding your home insurance policy coverage is more critical now than ever,” said Shannon Martin, a Bankrate analyst who specializes in insurance. “Many insurance companies have reevaluated how they rate extreme weather, and some have changed the perils they are willing to cover.

There are early signs that this year's flu shot appears to work well at keeping people out of the hospital. A report on Chile's flu season, released Thursday by the CDC, found the vaccine was 49% protective against flu-related hospitalizations. That might seem low, but from 2015 to 2020, flu shot effectiveness in the U.S. ranged from 29% to 48%. It's unclear whether this year's flu shots in the U.S. will be as effective as was found during Chile's flu season. Only about half of the population gets an annual flu shot, typically.
