Murray Hill Is Ready to Share His Personal Life

Murray Hill’s signature catchphrase is a percussive “Showbiz!” When he began performing as a drag king in New York during the mid-90s on stages he recalls being “the size of a postage stamp,” shouting “Showbiz!” called out the irony of his Vegas showman persona against the gritty and grimy environs of underground drag clubs. Today, at age 51, with roles as Fred Rococo on HBO’s “Somebody Somewhere,” which was recently renewed for a third season, and as host of Hulu’s new game show “Drag Me to Dinner,” the distance between Mr. Hill and the mainstream is shrinking. Still, his life isn’t wall-to-wall glamour. “I’m in a two-bedroom apartment right now, the second bedroom being my bathroom where I’m talking to you,” he told me from his home in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, during our video call. For Pride season, which lasts the month of June, we unleashed Mr. Hill on the town with his iPhone to capture some of his most “Showbiz!” moments.

When “Padam Padam,” the Australian pop star Kylie Minogue’s 77th (77th!) people, especially gay men, greeted the campy song with gleeful incredulity, and its infectious chorus quickly spawned memes upon memes upon memes. The “Padam Padam” craze might have started off as a meme, but also it’s making a new generation of kids discover her, and that’s thrilling to see.

In the back seat of a car en route to the West Village, she reflected on her shift from model to advocate. “And then I felt like I entered a new trap, which is respectability politics.”Ms. Rocero said she never felt fully comfortable in the role of trans role model. At first she was excited to assume what she called an Angelina Jolie persona — a beautiful, world-trotting champion of social issues. “Ines was the first one,” Ms. Rocero said, referring to the French model Ines Rau. In the West Village, Ms. Rocero once again jaywalked while approaching Rosecrans, a combination florist and coffee shop.
If I could put TikTok into an image,if I could help you visualize it,I would say that it’s almost like everyone is in awashing machine together. And it’s just spinning, and everything’s gettingintermixed, and maybe colors are bleeding into each other. And whatever is happening in the world, whatever temperature we’re feeling, everyone’s feeling it all together in that bigwashing machine.

The nuns of my youth did not wear habits, but it was still nearly impossible to imagine them enjoying themselves. Even the cigarettes they sucked down outside the rectory looked more like chores than vices.
