India is considering a policy to mandate equipping smartphones with hardware to receive live TV signals without the need for cellular networks. It has proposed use of so-called ATSC 3.0 technology popular in North America that allows precise geo-locating of TV signals and provides high picture quality. The policy pushback is the latest from firms operating in India's smartphone sector. For India's government, the live TV broadcast features are a way to offload the congestion on telecom networks due to higher video consumption. Samsung tops India's smartphone market with a 17.2% share, while Xiaomi follows with a 16.6% share, according to research firm Counterpoint.

High-tension power lines are pictured outside a Tata Power sub station in the suburbs of Mumbai, India, August 8, 2017. At the same time, India's power emissions climbed 4.5% to new highs on the back of record use of high-polluting coal, which generates roughly 75% of India's electricity. SOFT PATCH/HIGH POINT OVERLAPDuring the April-June window, when India's emissions exceeded Europe's, India's total power use levels rose on high demand for air conditioning in the hottest months of the year. These conflicting approaches to energy sector management reflect the starkly different developmental phases of each market. India's government has established ambitious long-term goals for boosting renewable energy generation and lowering power sector emissions.

REUTERS/Shailesh Andrade Acquire Licensing RightsMUMBAI, Aug 29 (Reuters Breakingviews) - The bar for Mukesh Ambani to impress is rising, including on succession. Planning is sensible, yet Reliance shares closed down 1.1%. Here, the top challenge may be getting public shareholders to match the $100 billion valuation the Qataris have set for the shopping unit. REUTERS/Shailesh AndradeNEW DELHI, May 4 (Reuters) - India’s exports of goods and services could touch $900 billion in the current financial year, up from $770 billion in the previous year, keeping resilient despite global headwinds, a top official of a grouping of exporters said. India’s exports have increased by more than $200 billion in the last two years, led by a surge in exports of software, mobile exports, and agricultural and petroleum products. Exports of agricultural, petroleum, and electronic goods remained strong in the Western markets due to pricing factors while exports to Asian and Middle east countries have grown substantially, exporters said. "Indian exporters are hopeful that both countries would soon work out a mechanism allowing payments in local currencies that would facilitate the shipments of Indian goods to Russia," Sahai said. But Indian officials have said Russia was reluctant to accept payments in the rupee currency for its oil exports.

REUTERS/Shailesh Andrade/File Photo/File PhotoNEW DELHI, Jan 24 (Reuters) - India's government on Tuesday tested locally developed mobile operating system BharOS, a move seen as challenging the dominance of Google's Android just days after the U.S. giant suffered a major antitrust setback in the country. The government endorsement of the operating system comes after Google lost its fight in India's Supreme Court to block an antitrust order that will force the company to change how it markets its Android operating system. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been pushing for self-reliance to boost and promote everything from local manufacturing to domestic startups. The operating system has been developed by a startup incubated at an Indian Institute of Technology in southern India.

REUTERS/Shailesh AndradeMUMBAI, Sept 26 (Reuters Breakingviews) - A bear market might be a good time to step onto the world stage. India’s sovereign debt is widely expected to be added to the JPMorgan Emerging Market Bond index, tracked by some $220 billion of assets under management. Overall, foreigners own less than 2% of the sovereign market, compared to about 10% in China and over 20% in Indonesia, according to estimates by Morgan Stanley. Inclusion might quickly shepherd over $20 billion of passive funds that track the benchmark, assuming India gets a 10% weighting, matching China and Indonesia.
