You Lost Your Passport. Now What?
  + stars: | 2024-06-11 | by ( Seth Kugel | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
While just about every other document is accessible online, a lost passport is one of the last analog emergencies that can derail an international trip. Here’s a guide to replacing a lost passport according to how fast you need it, how much money you have to spare and where you live. If you’ve got at least three weeksYou’ll be OK. On the State Department website, at travel.state.gov/passports, first report your passport lost and then follow the process for a replacement. On the website, you’ll find a list of 7,500 passport acceptance facilities — including post offices, public libraries and clerk of court offices — where you can make an appointment or, in most cases, come during scheduled walk-in hours. They’ll verify your documents and send them to the State Department, and you’ll get your passport in the mail.

Dear Tripped Up,Last October, my extended family spent a week in Todos Santos, in Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, for a wedding. Nothing else unusual happened that day, and reviews on Google for this gas station contain eerily similar accusations of fraudulent charges from other tourists. I disputed the charge, but Wells Fargo repeatedly denied my claim, even when I asked the Better Business Bureau to intercede. Dear Nate,We cannot be sure the fraud occurred at the gas station, but if so, it’s a clever scam. Humor me while I consider the situation from the perspective of a bank like Wells Fargo.

Hedge funds took a diversified approach to technology investing in the first quarter as the sector built on its 2024 rally. Both Appaloosa and Coatue trimmed stakes in Nvidia during the period, with the latter shrinking his stake by 68% to $1.25 billion. Stanley Druckenmiller told CNBC last month that he cut his Nvidia stake in late March and called AI a "little overhyped" in the short run. Apple caught renewed attention from Viking Global and cuts from Coatue and Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway. Coatue, Third Point, Viking Global and Tiger Global upped their Amazon stakes, while Appaloosa and D1 Capital trimmed their holdings.

Dear Tripped Up,In September 2022, I booked a 17-day Arabian Sea cruise through Vantage Travel Services to celebrate my 80th birthday with my wife. I used my credit card to leave a $2,000 deposit and paid the remaining $17,905 shortly afterward by bank transfer. I also bought the Worldwide Trip Protector plan from Travel Insured International (for $1,954), in part because it covered financial default and bankruptcy of cruise lines. My credit card returned the $2,000, and I filed an insurance claim for $17,905. For nearly five months, Travel Insured International and its parent company, Crum & Forster, did not respond to my detailed inquiries.

Baupost's Seth Klarman found a slew of buying opportunities in the first quarter, including a handful of artificial intelligence-linked stocks, according to a new regulatory filing. The noted hedge fund investor added a sizable stake in web recommendation platform Outbrain last quarter, building a bet worth more than $100 million and making it his ninth largest position. Klarman also took a small bet in Soundhound AI , a voice AI and speech recognition company. And just like Buffett, Klarman has increased his exposure to the tech sector in recent years to take advantage of its explosive growth. In this case, Klarman significantly increased exposure to the group after prices got a lot cheaper.

Following the February 3, 2023, Norfolk Southern freight train derailment, residents were ordered to evacuate temporarily. But several class-action lawsuits say the company hasn’t done enough to remediate the toxic chemicals released into the area. They also blamed Norfolk Southern for negligence. Dear Tripped Up,Last year, my husband and I splurged on round-trip first-class tickets on Japan Airlines from San Francisco to Tokyo for $13,474 each. On the same day, I also bought business class tickets for a couple who was traveling with us at $8,429 apiece. In September, Amex notified me that we had been downgraded to business class for the return flight. I contested this with Amex Travel, but they rejected our claim. All three airlines I contacted delayed, obfuscated or otherwise dillydallied before getting me answers, but let’s start with your travel agent, American Express.

Dear Tripped Up,Last September, my husband and I left our kids with their grandparents and set off to Ireland. Our $2,132 itinerary took us from Minneapolis to Toronto to Dublin on tickets booked on United Airlines through Expedia but ultimately operated by Air Canada, a United partner. Checkout time came and went without a word, so we went to the airport and were told to call Air Canada customer service. I skipped over Expedia, since your trip had already started, and reached out to United and Air Canada — as you flew on an airline’s partner, it’s a code share arrangement. Air Canada, on the other hand, took almost two weeks to get back to me, and its response was underwhelming.

Dear Tripped Up,Last May, I reserved a two-bedroom apartment in London for eight days through Booking.com, using a credit card to hold the reservation. I sent the equivalent of $3,100 dollars to the account of a man named Nyholm Peik, which I now know was a foolish thing to do. Soon afterward, Booking emailed to tell me the property was no longer available. Airbnb was just hitting 100,000 listings (compared to seven million today) and most people still thought Vrbo was a typo. Plus, I had wired money for a rental apartment via a similarly dubious-sounding website, rentflat.com.br, in Rio de Janeiro the year before without a hitch.

Hedge funds appeared to take profits in a host of winning " Magnificent Seven " stocks during the fourth quarter at the end of a blowout year for the septet. Still, Nvidia shares rallied 14% in the fourth quarter, extending a 3% gain in the September quarter. Nor was Nvidia the only semiconductor maker that hedge funds cut back on in the fourth quarter. Reducing exposure to the rest of Magnificent Seven Hedge funds also took profits in a handful of other popular Magnificent Seven stocks that helped power 2023's AI-fueled market rally. Beyond the most prominent companies, hedge funds also made key reductions in other popular technology and semiconductor bets last quarter.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas proposed to the NFL in December 2021. “Let’s just marry these brands, and let’s bring the Super Bowl here,” Steve Hill, president and CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, recalled telling a room of NFL franchise owners. Dear Tripped Up,After graduating from college in 2022 and working for a year, I used my bonus and some of my savings to book a nine-day Mediterranean cruise on Norwegian Cruise Line for my partner and me. Our $7,657 cruise package included airfare from Atlanta to Barcelona, Spain, via Newark, and Norwegian’s own BookSafe Travel Protection Plan, which included travel insurance and also allowed me to “cancel for any reason” for a 75 percent credit. So we spent the night in the Newark airport, paid for a return flight to Atlanta the next morning and canceled the cruise and remaining air legs. I would have moved on to help another Tripped Up reader, but Norwegian’s use of the responsibility-shirking phrase “as a gesture of good will” bugged me. I wanted to know why BookSafe didn’t cover you, and what other cruise customers can do to protect themselves.

While the broader region offers these and other rainforest-based adventures, the top three attractions in urban Belém are breakfast, lunch and dinner. Marcos Antônio Gonçalves Bastos, known by a childhood nickname, Medici, has documented the local cuisine on his Instagram account. He compares Belemenses to Italians in how they care for and protect local tradition. Real tacacá is cloudy yellow because its base is tucupi, perhaps the region’s most defining and addictive flavor, created centuries ago by Indigenous groups.
