As your Projectionist, here’s my analysis of the morning’s biggest surprises and omissions. Greta Gerwig misses a directing nomination. With her billion-dollar blockbuster, “Barbie,” Greta Gerwig set a Hollywood record for the highest-grossing movie ever directed by a woman. CNN —The nominees for the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards have been announced, with “Oppenheimer” leading the charge with 13 nominations. There were few surprises from the British Academy, with strong awards season favorites faring well, including Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” with 11 nominations and Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” with nine. Standing out from the crowd was “The Zone of Interest,” Jonathan Glazer’s unique film about the Holocaust, which achieved nine nominations. “Barbie” received nods in five categories, including Margot Robbie for best actress, but did not land a best picture nomination. “We were very fully making a ’70s movie,” Payne says, recently speaking by phone from his desk in Omaha, Nebraska. Payne, 62, shot “The Holdovers,” set at a New England boarding school, largely with filmmaking equipment and camera lenses from that period. “We were trying to play the exercise of: We are in 1970 making this movie,” he says. I told (screenwriter) David Hemingson: ‘We’re writing for Paul Giamatti. But as long-term and ’70s-oriented as making “The Holdovers” was, it struck Payne as a contemporary story, too.

Pfizer on Monday said it would stop developing its experimental obesity and diabetes pill, lotiglipron, due to elevated liver enzymes in patients who took the drug once a day in mid-stage clinical studies. New York-based Pfizer said it will instead focus on its other oral obesity drug, danuglipron, which is in a fully enrolled phase two clinical trial. Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla has said that an obesity pill could eventually generate $10 billion each year for the company. The new class of obesity drugs is piquing public interest and causing a weight loss industry gold rush. Analysts believe Eli Lilly’s pill has an edge over Pfizer’s danuglipron.
