CNN —US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin arrived in Kyiv on Monday, in a surprise trip to Ukraine to reemphasize the US’ support for the embattled country amid other pressing challenges abroad. “The message that I bring you today, Mr. President, is the United States of America is with you,” Austin told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. What happened here in Ukraine – that not only matters to Ukraine but it matters to the rest of the world. A senior defense official said Austin intended to speak with Ukrainians about their requirements for security assistance. There’s probably nothing more important than that.”Austin’s trip comes just days before he will host the 17th meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, virtually from the Pentagon.

To underscore the pattern, the Pentagon released previously nonpublic photos and videos of Chinese fighter jets intercepting US aircraft flying in international airspace. The images, which date back to January 2022, show Chinese fighter jets getting dangerously close to US military jets in international airspace in an attempt to “intimidate” them, the Pentagon said in a statement about the incidents. Some of the Chinese fighter jets came within 20 feet of the US planes, the videos show. TEL AVIV—Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin landed in Israel Friday to visit top Israeli officials as the U.S. pours munitions and other weaponry into Israel amid the growing conflict here. Austin’s visit comes as Israeli officials call for civilians in the northern part of Gaza to evacuate to the southern section in the next 24 hours, a sign that Israel’s military forces are poised to begin their massive ground invasion of Gaza following Hamas’ attack Saturday. Austin is expected to meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and the Israeli War Cabinet before viewing a fresh shipment of American munitions arriving in Israel Friday. The US is sending squadrons of advanced fighter jets to prevent the war in Israel from escalating. US Air Force F-35, F-15, F-16, and A-10 jets will deploy in the region in a "deterrence posture." The US is also sending an advanced carrier and heavily armed strike group to Israel's coast.
