Jerry Nehl Boylan was found guilty in 2023 of one federal felony count of misconduct or neglect of ship officer last year. Thirty-three passengers and one crew member below deck died of smoke inhalation, police said. Thirty-four people were killed in the boat fire. It's a smaller cohort than the bank's 2021 MD class, down 5% amid a dealmaking slowdown. The Labor Day tragedy in 2019 spurred changes to maritime regulations, congressional reform and civil lawsuits. At the time of the fire, no owner, operator or charterer had been cited or fined for failure to post a roving patrol since 1991, Coast Guard records showed. The NTSB faulted the Coast Guard for not enforcing that requirement and recommended it develop a program to ensure boats with overnight passengers actually have the watchman. The Coast Guard has since enacted new regulations regarding fire detection systems, extinguishers, escape routes and other safety measures as mandated by Congress. WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense department authorities say the remains of an Ohio sailor killed during the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, have been identified. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency said Monday that Navy Seaman 2nd Class Stanley C. Galaszewski, 29, of Steubenville, Ohio, was one of 104 crewmen on the battleship USS California killed during the Dec. 7, 1941, attack. Unidentified remains were buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl in Honolulu. In 2018, the remains of 25 unknown casualties were exhumed and DNA and other evidence was used to identify the remains of Galaszewski, who officials said was accounted for in May. The US Navy officially decommissioned USS Sioux City this week. The $362 million Littoral Combat Ship has been in service roughly four years and nine months. USS Sioux City, a Freedom-class Littoral Combat Ship, was commissioned into service with the Navy on November 17, 2018. In September last year, the Navy decommissioned the Independence-class Littoral Combat Ship USS Coronado after just eight years of service.
