  + stars: | 2024-08-02 | by ( Nadja Popovich | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +58 min
Wind turbines provided just 1 percent of the electricity produced in the state in 2001 and nearly 60 percent last year. How Kentucky made electricity from 2001 to 2023 Percentage of power produced from each energy sourceCoal still generates the majority of the electricity produced in Kentucky, a longtime coal mining state. Since then, virtually all of the electricity produced in the state has come from renewable sources, including hydropower, biomass, wind and solar. It has supplied more than 85 percent of the electricity produced in the state every year for more than two decades. Last year, wind supplied more than a fifth of the electricity produced in the state.

Nikki Haley doesn’t defeat former President Donald Trump in New Hampshire’s primary on Tuesday, the fight may be over. Haley said Sunday she would “absolutely” remain in the Republican presidential race through South Carolina’s February 24 primary. Recent departures from the 2024 race have already shaped the New Hampshire Republican primary. Another 3% of likely GOP primary voters say they’d vote for someone else. For her part, Haley insisted Monday on Fox News that she’ll continue in the race, no matter the outcome of the New Hampshire primary.

Mr. DeSantis, who endorsed Mr. Trump on his way out of the race, earned some praise and a reprieve from the former president’s persistent name-calling. In fact, most have now thrown their support behind Mr. Trump, underscoring the steep challenges she faces in securing allies to challenge the famously spiteful Mr. Trump. The betrayal of Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, a former Haley ally who endorsed Mr. Trump, seemed to particularly sting Ms. Haley. Chris Christie of New Jersey has previously signaled his reluctance to endorse Ms. Haley, and she has countered that she did not want his endorsement.) What remains unclear on the eve of the primary is just how much impact Mr. DeSantis’s withdrawal will have in New Hampshire.

Nikki Haley entered a seafood shack in Seabrook, N.H., on Sunday afternoon with some news for the crowd: Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida, was no longer running for president. “We just heard that Ron DeSantis has dropped out of the race,” Ms. Haley, the former South Carolina governor, said to cheers from the several dozen attendees. “And I want to say to Ron, he ran a great race, he’s been a good governor and we wish him well.”“Having said that, it’s now one fella and one lady left,” she continued, holding up two fingers, to more cheers. She added: “For now, I’ll leave you with this: May the best woman win.”Ms. Haley and her allies have long sought to frame the presidential race as being between herself and former President Donald J. Trump, even as she finished third in the Iowa caucuses. With Mr. DeSantis now out of the race, that argument became much more salient — though recent polling averages put her 15 percentage points behind Mr. Trump in New Hampshire.

Ron DeSantis suspended his Republican presidential campaign on Sunday, ending his 2024 White House bid just before the New Hampshire primary while endorsing his bitter rival Donald Trump. Ambassador Nikki Haley as the last major candidates remaining in the race ahead of Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary. “Option A: Nikki Haley drops out, unites behind President Trump, and commits to defeating Joe Biden," they wrote. “Option B: Nikki Haley prepares to be absolutely DEMOLISHED and EMBARRASSED in her home state of South Carolina," which votes on Feb. 24. Rep. James James Spillane, of Deerfield, said he had initially backed Trump, switched to DeSantis and will now vote for Trump.

Berkshire changed the accounting practices at Pilot this year after it acquired control of the company. “Berkshire is intent on using the accounting change to justify grossly underpaying Pilot (the Haslam family) for its 20% interest," the lawsuit said. The Haslam family, which includes Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and former Tennessee Gov. But the family did say Berkshire estimated its stake would be worth $3.2 billion without the accounting change. “This legal dispute is limited to a narrow issue between owners and is in no way related to the management or day-to-day operations of Pilot Company," Seabrook said.

Before the court action, Alabama – which is 27% Black – had only one Black-majority congressional district out of seven seats. The case is expected to land before the all-Republican state Supreme Court, where DeSantis appointees hold most seats. A separate federal case in Georgia challenges the congressional map on constitutional grounds and is slated to go to trial next month. UtahThe state Supreme Court, in a case it heard in July, is considering whether it even has the authority to weigh in on map-drawing decisions by the GOP-controlled state legislature. Advocacy groups and a handful of voters are challenging a congressional map that further carved up Democratic-leaning Salt Lake County between four decidedly Republican districts.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin Republicans have enjoyed outsize control of the Legislature in one of the most closely divided states for a dozen years. Maintaining that power is now at the heart of a drama involving the state Supreme Court that has national political implications. “Impeachment is an act of pure power politics,” said Ben Wikler, chair of the Wisconsin Democratic Party. In 2020, the state Supreme Court, then controlled 4-3 by conservatives, came within one vote of overturning Democrat Joe Biden's nearly 21,000 vote victory over then-President Donald Trump. The Supreme Court has yet to decide whether it will take either case.

Perhaps emblematic of complicated economic times, jazz musicians are doing more with less these days, especially when it comes to midsize ensembles. Drummer Tomas Fujiwara , guitarist Mary Halvorson , trumpeter Adam O’Farrill and saxophonist Anna Webber all lead midsize bands that are unusually expansive in their sound. Saxophonist and composer Ingrid Laubrock , a sometime collaborator of Ms. Halvorson’s, follows in this lineage with her new recording, “The Last Quiet Place” (Pyroclastic). Ms. Laubrock, who is 52 years old, chose her title after reading Elizabeth Kolbert ’s books “The Sixth Extinction” and “Under a White Sky.” The themes of global extinction and humanity’s impact on nature led Ms. Laubrock to consider ports of serenity, though they may be more internal than external. Although the saxophonist has participated in numerous sessions with performers who lean toward the softer side, the music here is lithe, sprawling and at times intensely spiky.
[1/2] Norman Seabrook, (C) the head of New York City's prison guard union, exits the Manhattan District court house in New York, U.S., July 22, 2016. Seabrook, 63, the former head of the Correction Officers' Benevolent Association, has spent 21 months in prison after unsuccessfully appealing his August 2018 conviction. "The sentence Huberfeld originally received reflected an approximate equivalence between the conduct of the bribe giver, Huberfeld, and the bribe taker, Seabrook," Hellerstein wrote. The correction officers union has about 20,000 active and retired members. The case is U.S. v Seabrook, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No.
Trump's ex-CFO, Allen Weisselberg, was sentenced Tuesday to five months in NYC's Rikers jail. Rikers guards love Trump and will give better treatment to Weisselberg, 75, one expert predicts. Being 75 years old and in the news will also help Weisselberg, predicted the expert, Five Mualimmak-Ak, a jail-reform activist and former detainee who visits Rikers frequently. "Ninety-percent of the guards are Trump supporters, even though most of them are Black and Latino women," said Mualimmak-Ak, program director for LIFE Camp, a city-based nonprofit. "So he'll get preferential treatment from the guards because he is a Trump supporter.
