Allegations of the sexual abuse of Palestinian prisoners by members of the Israeli military are “horrific,” the United States has said, after a graphic video broadcast on Israeli news added fuel to mounting criticism of the U.S. ally’s conduct in the war in Gaza. “We have seen the video, and reports of sexual abuse of detainees are horrific,” Miller said, adding that the reports should be “fully” investigated by the Israeli government. “There ought to be zero tolerance for sexual abuse, rape of any detainee, period,” he added. “No circumstances, however exceptional, can ever justify torture or ill-treatment.”Israeli soldiers load naked Palestinian prisoners onto a bus in a photo sent to NBC News by Mustafa Barghouti, Palestinian Legislative Council member. Recent unrest at two Israeli military bases has highlighted a growing divide among Israelis about the conduct of their soldiers, and revived a deeper and older battle over the nature of the Israeli state and who should shape its future. Two of the soldiers were later released. Dozens of protesters gathered outside the base in solidarity with the detained soldiers, including at least three far-right lawmakers from the ruling coalition. Hundreds later massed outside Beit Lid, a second base in which the 10 men had been brought for interrogation. The incidents were widely broadcast across Israel, spreading an image of disunity at a time when the country is fighting enemies on multiple fronts.

Further unrest was expected on Tuesday, when a military court is expected to decide whether to extend the soldiers’ detentions. Since the start of the war, the Israeli military has captured at least 4,000 Gazans, mostly from inside Gaza, and brought them to Sde Teiman, a military base in southern Israel, for detention and interrogation. Former detainees and some Israeli soldiers have said that guards routinely abuse Gazans held at Sde Teiman; at least 35 detainees have died either at the site or shortly after leaving it. Video Israeli protesters broke into the Sde Teiman military base in support of the detained reservists. Neither the professor nor the Israeli military would confirm that claim.

CNN —Far-right lawmakers and protesters breached the perimeter of a controversial Israeli detention facility for Palestinians on Monday, after the Israeli military confirmed it was investigating soldiers over the alleged abuse of a prisoner. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for immediate calm at Sde Teiman and condemned the break-in at the base in a statement on Monday. Last month, Halevi said the military had launched a probe into allegations of mistreatment at Sde Teiman, as well as at Anatot and Ofer. As part of CNN’s investigation into Sde Teiman, three Israeli whistleblowers said that Palestinian detainees at the base were constantly blindfolded and held under extreme physical restraint. The account tallied with details of a letter authored by a doctor working at Sde Teiman published by Ha’aretz in April.

Israeli military police detained at least nine military reservists on Monday at an Israeli army base where thousands of Palestinians from Gaza have been held, taking them in for questioning as part of an investigation into “suspected substantial abuse of a detainee” there, the military said. Several Israeli media outlets reported that the Palestinian detainee had been hospitalized with a serious injury to his anus; some outlets reported that the reservists were accused of sexually abusing the detainee. The reservists’ detentions soon sparked a crisis at the base, called Sde Teiman, where videos posted on social media showed reservists shouting in anger about the raid — a rare instance of Israeli soldiers confronting their own. The tensions escalated, videos showed, when a crowd of flag-waving civilian protesters broke into the base through its metal gates in support of the detained reservists. By late afternoon, the military said police and soldiers had driven the protesters out of the base.

The men sat in rows, handcuffed and blindfolded, unable to see the Israeli soldiers who stood watch over them from the other side of a mesh fence. They were barred from talking more loudly than a murmur, and forbidden to stand or sleep except when authorized. They were all cut off from the outside world, prevented for weeks from contacting lawyers or relatives. This was the scene one afternoon in late May at a military hangar inside Sde Teiman, an army base in southern Israel that has become synonymous with the detention of Gazan Palestinians. Most Gazans captured since the start of the war on Oct. 7 have been brought to the site for initial interrogation, according to the Israeli military.

CNN —Israel’s Supreme Court on Wednesday will for the first time discuss the closure of the desert detention camp of Sde Teiman where Palestinian detainees from Gaza have allegedly been held under conditions of extreme abuse. The committee tasked with examining the conditions of Palestinian detainees from Gaza is set to submit its recommendations to Halevi this month. Three Israeli whistleblowers told CNN that Palestinian detainees at the facility were constantly blindfolded and held under extreme physical restraint. The account tallied with details of a letter authored by a doctor working at Sde Teiman published by Ha’aretz in April. Instead, the Israeli military said that the detainees are given back their clothing once the IDF has determined that they pose no security risk.

Read previewAn Israeli detention center is subjecting Palestinians to abuse, strapping detainees down to their beds, blindfolding them, and holding them in diapers, a new CNN report alleges. It has been the site of abusive conduct against some of the 70 Palestinian detainees, three Israeli whistleblowers told CNN. One whistleblower told CNN that beatings were "not done to gather intelligence. In a field hospital, wounded detainees were strapped to beds, dressed in diapers, and fed through straws, CNN reported. In November, Business Insider's Alia Shoaib reported on graphic videos appearing to show IDF soldiers abusing Palestinian detainees in the West Bank.

CNN spoke to three Israeli whistleblowers who worked at the Sde Teiman desert camp, which holds Palestinians detained during Israel’s invasion of Gaza. Reports of abuse at Sde Teiman have already surfaced in Israeli and Arab media after an outcry from Israeli and Palestinian rights groups over conditions there. CNN has requested permission from the Israeli military to access the Sde Teiman base. The account tallied with details of a letter authored by a doctor working at Sde Teiman published by Ha’aretz in April. The structure, which resembles an animal pen, is located in the central area of the Sde Teiman compound.

CNN —A doctor at a field hospital for detained Palestinians at Israel’s Sde Teiman army base has described “deplorable conditions” and “routine” amputations due to handcuff injuries, according to an exclusive report from the newspaper Haaretz. “Just this week, two prisoners had their legs amputated due to handcuff injuries, which unfortunately is a routine event,” the doctor said in the letter, according to the Haaretz report on Thursday. CNN spoke to a source who has a medical background and previously visited the Sde Teiman field hospital. The medical source highlighted the systematic “dehumanizing” of detainees at the field hospital, which they described as a large “tent” that is “not insulated” from the elements. “We were asked not to use our names,” the medical source told CNN, adding that the Gazan prisoners were identified by serial numbers, rather than their names.
