Night had fallen, spirits were moving and the songwriting baseball coach was rounding third base and headed for home. Twice in the autumn of 2020, doctors had advised a gravely ill Tim Flannery to say goodbye to his family. The right arm that sent home so many San Francisco base runners during the Giants’ three World Series titles from 2010 to 2014 waved away a final coda. The road back from the brink was as unlikely as the man himself. An infielder turned popular coach, Flannery was always something more.

Brusdar Graterol, a right-handed reliever for the Los Angeles Dodgers, will always remember the day he saw his teammate Max Muncy sprinting straight toward one of the greatest moments of his life. Muncy was not attempting to beat out an infield single. And Graterol was not standing on the mound or in the Dodgers’ bullpen. It was April 24, and the moment came in Los Angeles’ Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Graterol stepped out of the bathroom, saw a man dashing down the hallway, and said to himself, “Oh my God, that’s Muncy over there!

The harmonic convergence between the resurrected Jason Heyward and the rampaging Los Angeles Dodgers crystallized beautifully one evening in Baltimore last month. It was in the top of the second inning at Camden Yards when Heyward smashed a three-run home run off the right-hander Tyler Wells, opening the gates to a five-run inning. And the Dodgers, being the Dodgers, adjusted accordingly. “I told him the situation, that my bet was that they were going to use a lefty the rest of the way,” said Manager Dave Roberts. “I told him, ‘You did your job to help us win this game.’ And he was like, ‘Doc, I’m in.’”

By retaining him at the deadline, the Angels clung to what they feel is an important piece of rope tethering the two sides together. He has been given the creative space to flourish both as a hitter and as a pitcher. And the club has shielded him from the news media, ensuring that all of this is possible without much outside interruption. Additionally, the Giolito acquisition helped push the Angels over the $233 million luxury-tax threshold — a first under the owner Arte Moreno. Club officials feel his impact daily as they watch the throng of fans entering Angel Stadium.

Marcus Semien was a sophomore infielder at the University of California, Berkeley, in 2010 when Bruce Bochy was managing the San Francisco Giants to their first of three World Series titles in five years. By the Giants’ third World Series title of that stretch, in 2014, Semien was a young infielder with the Chicago White Sox. “I grew up in the Bay Area, so I’d seen what he did with those rosters in San Francisco,” Semien, now the heart and soul of Bochy’s first Texas Rangers team, said over the weekend. “In the beginning of the year, nobody thought they’d do anything,” he said, speaking about those Giants teams. Then, speaking about the current Rangers club, he said: “I knew we had talent in this room.

Eric Karros settled in behind the cage as the Yankees took batting practice before their series opener in Dodger Stadium last month. Now, he was adding a fourth player to his power list: Aaron Judge. “I never wanted to be just an offensive player that can only hit, and a liability on defense,” Judge said during a clubhouse conversation the next day. “Because I know everybody else on the field is working their butt off, especially that guy on the mound. And it’s going to help us win a ballgame.”

The Los Angeles Dodgers arrive at Citi Field on Friday to start the second half of the baseball season. The visit is the first test in a crucial 15-game run for the Mets that will take the team to the Aug. 1 trading deadline — and determine its future. Can the Mets make up enough ground to get the green light from the team’s owner, Steven A. Cohen, to make a push for the playoffs? “It’s on us if we want to keep this thing afloat,” Max Scherzer, the veteran right-handed starting pitcher, said in San Diego before the Mets scattered for the All-Star break. “Don’t let the Metropolitans get hot,” outfielder Tommy Pham playfully warned before leaving the Mets’ 6-2 loss to the Padres on Sunday in the first inning with a sore right groin.

Justin Verlander pitches for the Mets and won two World Series titles with the Houston Astros, but he will always be a part of Detroit. It was there that he started his storied career, won his first of three Cy Young Awards and his one Most Valuable Player Award and fired two of his three career no-hitters. So when three Tigers pitchers combined to throw the ninth no-hitter in club history — and the 20th combined no-hitter in major league history — Verlander was paying attention. “My wife informed me of how young she was when that happened and then somebody else told me how young I looked,” Verlander said, smiling and good-naturedly muttering an expletive that emphasized how long ago that was. But more than any other active player, he knows that ballpark, that city and that team’s history.

NEW YORK/LONDON, June 30 (Reuters) - Global mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activity fell 36% year-on-year in the second quarter, but investment bankers and lawyers expressed optimism that the stock market's recovery will gradually restore chief executives' dealmaking confidence. "Global uncertainty is what is impacting M&A most - it just makes people uncomfortable. It's easier to say, I'll pass on a deal - nobody gets fired for passing on a deal. M&A volumes in the United States declined by 30% to $318.4 billion, while Europe and Asia Pacific volumes shrank 49% and 24% respectively. Not a single so-called mega-deal, which typically refers to transactions worth over $25 billion, was signed during the quarter.

When Mike Trout or Shohei Ohtani hit home runs, they get a Samurai helmet placed on their head as they return to the Angels’ dugout. The San Diego Padres strike a cheesy pose with their conquering homer heroes and snap a dugout Polaroid. But when the Cleveland Guardians have a player go deep, the only thing that occurs is some good, old-fashioned cheering from the bench. “No, we don’t celebrate,” designated hitter Josh Bell said, referring to the elaborate and choreographed rituals practiced by more than a third of Major League Baseball teams. Insider turned to Disney CEO Bob Iger's 2019 book for insight on how he navigates challenges. As Florida's largest attraction with more than 70,000 jobs, Walt Disney World is crucial to both the company and the state. During his first tenure at Disney, Iger orchestrated the $4 billion acquisition of Marvel without a single leak. Under predecessor Disney CEO Michael Eisner, board members said they worried that Marvel was "too edgy" and "would tarnish the Disney brand." File photo of Disney CEO Bob Iger.

By Thursday, what was supposed to be an upcoming celebration at Dodger Stadium had become a lightning rod of controversy. The Los Angeles LGBT Center condemned the Dodgers’ decision on Thursday, demanding that the team reverse its stance on the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence or cancel Pride Night altogether. In part, the center’s statement read: “Buckling to pressure from out-of-state, right-wing fundamentalists, the Dodgers caved to a religious minority that is perpetuating a false narrative about L.G.B.T.Q.+ people. They have been fed lies about the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, and have therefore contributed to the ongoing, anti-L.G.B.T.Q. community.”The American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California also announced on Twitter that, in unity with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, “we will not participate in Pride Night.” The organization pointed out in the post that the Dodgers, who broke baseball’s color line with Jackie Robinson in 1947, had previously been “champions of inclusion.”
LOS ANGELES — Mookie Betts was returning from paternity leave, his car was stuck in Chicago freeway gridlock for what seemed like an eternity and he arrived at Wrigley Field late for that night’s game. The Los Angeles Dodgers knew in advance that Betts would miss the first pitch against the Cubs. And Manager Dave Roberts had put Betts on notice that once he arrived he was going to be playing shortstop for the first time in his major league career — and for the first time at any level in 10 years. So which was more harrowing for Betts, an All-Star outfielder and Most Valuable Player Award winner: the anxiety of being caught in traffic while the game was starting, or playing shortstop in the majors for the first time? Roberts, in his ninth season as the Dodgers’ manager, is known for his superhuman-like communication with his players.

Scherzer, who was ejected from the Mets’ game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday in the fourth inning, also was fined an undisclosed amount. The punishment was announced early Thursday evening before the Mets opened their four-game weekend series in San Francisco against the Giants. Scherzer had planned to appeal the suspension, according to his agent, Scott Boras, but then he told reporters before Thursday’s game that he would instead accept the ban. According to a person familiar with the proceedings, who spoke on condition of anonymity, Scherzer filed the appeal but agreed to drop it once M.L.B.

GENEVA, Nov 21 (Reuters) - The board of a Swiss-based trust fund managing some $3.5 billion in frozen assets seized after the Taliban took power last year is meeting in Geneva for the first time on Monday, a Swiss government spokesperson confirmed. The frozen central bank reserves were recently transferred from Washington into the 'Fund for the Afghan People' where U.S. officials say it will be shielded from the Taliban. The fund's statutes says its purpose is to "receive, protect, preserve and disburse assets for the benefit of the Afghan people".
