But Paulson is not the only GOP kingmaker who is privately gearing up to help Trump. Many of these "old cast" members are business leaders who have been close to Trump for years. President Joe Biden's campaign raised $21.3 million in February – almost twice the $10.9 million Trump's campaign raised during the same period, according to filing with the Federal Election Commission. The Democratic National Committee also outraised its counterpart, with the Democratic group pulling in $16.6 million in February, compared to the $10.7 million the Republican National Committee raised in the same period. The amounts for both parties and candidates do not include money raised by outside groups or coordinated committees on behalf of each candidate. These latest Trump offerings may not seem destined to have more success than Trump’s failed business ventures, such as his Trump Vodka and Trump Steaks. (By contrast, President Joe Biden’s campaign raised $33 million in the fourth quarter of 2023.) The vast majority — nearly $40 million — went to law firms working on his personal legal problems. But significant portions of their donations went to law firms defending Trump in civil cases involving his real-estate empire and its top executives, including Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, and Ivanka Trump. Only about $861,000 was spent on law firms working exclusively on political issues. Where there were gaps, we contacted law firms and individual lawyers who received money from the PACs. In 2021 and 2022 combined, Trump spent $16 million on legal fees through the Save America PAC.

Save America was once so flush with cash that Trump’s political operation used its money to seed a super PAC, MAGA Inc., that advertises in support of his presidential campaign. But as Trump’s legal bills have grown and its cash dwindled, Save America clawed back more than $42 million in refunds from the super PAC last year. The super PAC supporting her candidacy, SFA Fund, spent more freely. Its year-end report shows that the group raised $50.2 million and spent $63.7 million between July and December. The substantial burn rate left the super PAC with just $3.5 million in cash on hand entering 2024.

Another has an ally in Congress vowing to support his legal defense. On Thursday, Trump’s legal team formally asked a judge to sever his case from his co-defendants who want a speedy trial, according to court filings. The prospect of a costly legal defense has prompted some defendants to find other ways to raise money. Paying the legal bills of his co-defendants in Georgia could help the former president keep them all unified as they fight the Fulton County charges. None of the defendants has pleaded guilty, but it is common for criminal defendants facing mounting legal bills to end their cases without the time-consuming costs of a trial.

"Trump Employee 4" had initially been represented by a lawyer paid for by a Trump political action committee. Trump's PAC is helping pay millions in legal fees but is penny-pinching when it comes to Giuliani. Giuliani has more than $3 million in legal fees, but the PAC has only helped with a fraction of that, CNN reported. After that effort fell apart, Trump refused to help Giuliani with the costs associated with it. That reluctance to unburden Giuliani's legal debt now appears unchanged. CNN —With his attorney in tow, Rudy Giuliani traveled to Mar-a-Lago in recent months on a mission to make a personal and desperate appeal to former President Donald Trump to pay his legal bills. Giuliani and Costello traveled to Florida in late April where they had two meetings with Trump to discuss Giuliani’s seven-figure legal fees, making several pitches about how paying Giuliani’s bills was ultimately in Trump’s best interest. After Costello made his pitch, Trump verbally agreed to help with some of Giuliani’s legal bills without committing to any specific amount or timeline. Another source told CNN that Trump only agreed to cover a small fee from a data vendor hosting Giuliani’s records. A small percentage of these donations are diverted to his PAC, which is covering his mounting legal bills. Even Trump's PAC is skiplagging now

Trump's political action committee has embraced skiplagging, according to federal campaign finance reports. Save America PAC used the tactic as it spent more than $21 million on legal fees. Airlines are increasingly trying to thwart skiplagging as passengers embrace the practice amid rising prices. While some of that money was routed back to Trump's super PAC, more than $21 million was spent on legal fees. A representative for Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment about how the former president's orbit is using skiplagging.
