The United States topped 12 million cases of Covid-19 on Saturday, as the third wave's uncontrolled spread prompted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to urge Americans not to travel for Thanksgiving. The country recorded more than 200,000 coronavirus cases over the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 12,002,863, according to NBC News' tally. During a call on Thursday with reporters, Erin Sauber-Schatz with the CDC said that in the last week the United States had over a million new cases of Covid-19. Less than a week ago, the country had recorded 11 million total cases. In the last week we've seen over a million new cases Thanksgiving is a week away," said Sauber-Schatz, head of the CDC's Community Interventions and Critical Populations Task Force.

The country is facing some of these same choices again as we quickly head into the trifecta of holidays: Thanksgiving, the December holidays (Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa), and New Year's Eve. Cindy McMahon, from Manasquan, New Jersey, was hoping her brother's family would be able to join her family of four, plus their 87-year-old mother, for Thanksgiving this year. The director of the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Francis Collins, said that for the first time in 27 years, his family will not be gathering for Thanksgiving. MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow made an impassioned plea on Thursday night live from her home after announcing her partner of 21 years, Susan Mikula, had fallen ill with the coronavirus. Calling Mikula the "center" of her life, the TV personality said her partner had been sick for the past few weeks, "and at one point, we really thought there was a possibility that it might kill her." "And the bottom line is that she’s going to be fine, she’s recovering, she’s still sick but she’s going to be OK."Maddow said she had continued to test negative for COVID-19 since Mikula's diagnosis. She added Thanksgiving "is going to suck" but it will "suck so much less than you or somebody in your family getting this and getting sick. "This thing is scary as hell and whatever you’ve been willing to do to risk getting it, don’t.

Americans should avoid travel for Thanksgiving, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended Thursday. It was a last-minute attempt by the nation's leading public health agency to curb what's sure to be yet another dangerous spike in Covid-19 cases if families gather next week. It's a recommendation for the American public to consider," Dr. Henry Walke, the CDC's Covid-19 incident manager, said on the call. For Americans who do choose to travel, the CDC advised doing so as safely as possible, by following the same everyday recommendations from the agency, Walke said. Also Thursday, three major medical organizations published an open letter to Americans, citing the recent surge in Covid-19 cases to urge precautions for the holidays.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday recommended Americans against traveling for Thanksgiving to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Dr. Henry Walke, CDC's Covid-19 incident manager, said there is "no more important time than now for each and every American to redouble our efforts to watch our distance, wash our hands and, most importantly, wear a mask." "CDC is recommending against travel during the Thanksgiving period," he said. "For Americans who decide to travel, CDC recommends doing so as safely as possible by following the same recommendations for everyday living." "We're alarmed," he said, adding that the country has seen an "exponential increase" in cases, hospitalizations and deaths recently.

news briefing in months, arrived as many Americans were packing their bags for one of the most heavily traveled weeks of the year. It is the first time that the agency has warned people away from traditional holiday celebrations. “The safest way to celebrate Thanksgiving this year is at home with members of your household,” said Erin Sauber-Schatz, who leads the agency’s community intervention and critical population task force. She urged Americans to reassess plans for the coming week. The C.D.C.’s warning runs counter to messages from administration officials, who have denounced concerns that Thanksgiving celebrations will speed the virus’s spread.

(CNN) The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that Americans should not travel for Thanksgiving, and has posted updated guidelines for safely celebrating the holiday. "CDC is recommending against travel during the Thanksgiving Day period," Dr. Henry Walke, Covid-19 incident manager for the CDC, told reporters in a conference call. Safer gatherings can be held outside as much as possible, the CDC recommends. People who do travel should wear masks, keep their distance from others and wash their hands or use hand sanitizer frequently, the CDC said. "Don't travel if you are sick or if you have been around someone with COVID-19 in the past 14 days.
