Deliveries are the closest approximation of sales reported by Tesla but are not precisely defined in the company's shareholder communications. Tesla's Model 3 is about $4,000 more than that. Aging lineup, early days for Cybertruck While EV sales are still gaining popularity worldwide, the growth rate has slowed. In a push for end-of-quarter sales, Musk recently mandated that all sales and service staff install and demo FSD for customers before they hand over their cars. Despite its name, Tesla's premium option requires a human driver at the wheel, ready to steer or brake at any moment.

AdvertisementAuto expert Sandy Munro took a Tesla Cybertruck on a mini road trip and had one main complaint — the truck can be difficult to maneuver at times. Instead, Tesla has a rearview camera that displays on the truck's massive infotainment system. The auto expert is far from the first to express frustration with backing up in the Cybertruck. "A camera feed constantly runs on the center screen, but I still checked the rearview mirror out of habit every few minutes." "You have to be cognizant all the time that this is a big truck," Munro said of the Cybertruck.

The next Tesla after Cybertruck will be more affordable, Musk said. Musk said his company is "quite advanced" in its work on the affordable Tesla, and that he is reviewing production plans weekly. "The revolution in manufacturing that will be represented by that car will blow people's minds," Musk said. "It is not like any car production line that anyone's ever seen." Many car companies have responded to this change in demand by pulling back production plans while dealers lather on discounts to move these cars off their lots.

The Cybertruck's stainless steel body has made it difficult to align its panels, WSJ reported. The stainless steel has been difficult to shape into panels without gaps or alignment issues, the publication said, citing individuals who had worked on the Cybertruck. The Journal said the stainless steel is made in "coils that resemble giant rolls of toilet paper." The billionaire has said the vehicle's stainless steel body will be bulletproof and even comes with an option for fixed bulletproof windows. Munro has also pointed out that the thick stainless steel body has several perks for owners.

The switch to electric vehicles is still hampered by the high cost compared to gas cars. The higher upfront costs don't consider several less obvious costs that can hit after buying an EV. AdvertisementAdvertisementThose premiums are driven by higher repair costs. According to Mitchell, a collision repair software company, the average repair cost for a non-Tesla EV is $269 higher than the average for all vehicles. If people interested in used EVs are worried about replacing an expensive battery, the resale value will take a big hit.

Some people have called out potential fit and finish issues with a Tesla Cybertruck prototype. Auto expert Sandy Munro said it's misleading to judge a vehicle's fit and finish off a prototype. AdvertisementAdvertisementProspective Tesla Cybertruck buyers shouldn't worry about some of the panel gaps and smears that have showed up in recent sightings of the electric pickup, auto expert Sandy Munro says. "That vehicle has probably gone through some fairly rigorous testing," Munro said, referencing Tapley's video. "The thing about stainless steel is it hangs around a while," he said.

Tesla appears to be driving a Cybertruck disguised as an F-150, according to unverified photos. Elon Musk's biographer said Musk was inspired to build Cybertruck because Ford trucks are "boring." New images of Tesla's Cybertruck appear to show the carmaker has disguised one of its models as Ford's F-150 pickup truck. Up until recently, Ford has been one of few automakers to produce an EV pickup truck. Last year, Ford said it delivered over 13,000 electric F-150 trucks as the company worked to ramp up production and fulfill about 200,000 reservations.

The Bolt does not align with GM's long-term EV technology strategy, but it is the Detroit automaker's best-selling and most affordable EV in North America, by far. Barra and GM officials did not say how much the new Bolt would cost or where it would be built. For GM, the Bolt has been the mainstay for its North American EV sales. In the first six months of this year, U.S. Bolt sales totaled 33,659 vehicles, outselling Ford's Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai's Ioniq 5 and other EVs from established automakers. Bolt sales rebounded this year after GM was forced to halt production of the car for nearly six months to fix problems linked to battery fires.

Building in Mexico could be the key to the $25,000 Tesla. Even without unveiling the affordable model, one manufacturing expert is convinced Tesla has the chops to pull it off. The affordable Tesla will be unveiled "at a later date," Elon Musk has said. Elon Musk's plan to build another factory in Mexico will be key in Tesla's bid to provide the masses with a $25,000 car, according to automotive manufacturing expert Sandy Munro. That car is supposed to come out this year if the company is on track with those original plans.

Why Tesla cars get totaled so easily

Tesla's cars are tremendously complex, with a multitude of sensors and custom body parts. Insurers are increasingly declaring Tesla cars totaled in an accident instead of paying for a fix. To make matters even more complicated, Tesla's new "structural" battery packs — those that are integrated with the car's body — have "zero repairability," according to manufacturing expert Sandy Munro. Tesla is acutely aware of the high insurance costs of its vehicles, with CEO Elon Musk in January saying they were "unreasonably high." Tesla has also been working to offer its own insurance products in some states, including California, with premium prices based on driving data from cars' onboard sensors.

[1/2] He Xiaopeng, the co-founder, chairman and CEO of XPeng Motors attends a news conference ahead of the Shanghai Auto Show, in Shanghai, China April 16, 2023. "It's obvious the design of the (G6) came from the Model Y," industry analyst Sandy Munro told Reuters. Xpeng's simplified vehicle platform design - in effect, a three-piece frame that is both flexible and scalable - saves on parts, tooling, development and assembly time, and appears to have been lifted from Tesla, according to Munro. Such a platform has the potential to give Tesla, Xpeng and other automakers considering this approach a new weapon to help restore margins hit by recent price wars in China and other markets. Most carmakers said their battery packs are repairable, though few seem willing to share access to battery data. Lauterwasser said access to EV battery data is part of that fight. EV battery problems also expose a hole in the green "circular economy" touted by carmakers. Hill estimated at least 95% of the cells in the hundreds of EV battery packs - and thousands of hybrid battery packs - Synetiq has stored at Doncaster are undamaged and should be reused. 'PAIN POINTS'The British government is funding research into EV insurance "pain points" led by Thatcham, Synetiq and insurer LV=.
Its Model Y battery pack goes "straight to the grinder" after an accident, he said. "A Tesla structural battery pack is going straight to the grinder," Munro, a manufacturing expert known for his vehicle teardowns, told Reuters. Tesla's approach has been a structural battery pack, which has largely been hailed as revolutionary. Reuters cited experts that said Tesla and other automakers need to prioritize more easily repairable battery packs — and allow others access to battery cell data for repairs. That access to data, especially, has been debated as more EVs hit the roads.
Building in Mexico could be the key to the $25,000 Tesla. Even without unveiling the affordable model, one manufacturing expert is convinced Tesla has the chops to pull it off. The affordable Tesla will be unveiled "at a later date." Some of the industry's most profitable vehicles are built in Mexico, including some General Motors pickup trucks and heavy-duty Ram pickups. That car is supposed to come out this year if the company is on track with those original plans.
