President Joe Biden speaks during a campaign rally at Girard College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 29. Andrew Harnik/Getty ImagesAt tomorrow’s CNN debate, President Joe Biden is planning to attack his predecessor as being unfit for office and unworthy of representing the United States on the world stage. Faiz Shakir, Sanders’s 2020 campaign manager, told CNN it was a smart and effective strategy that earned a lot of media coverage, because of the nature of the announcement. “It works when you have actually relevant and new info to share, whenever that is,” Shakir told CNN. Democrats’ 2024 platform is still being drafted by the Biden campaign and Democratic National Convention operatives, sources say, making it more likely a later debate sees a heavier focus on policies and personnel.

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York has declared the race her most pressing electoral priority. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont is slated to join her for a pre-election rally in the Bronx. And a powerful pro-Israel lobby working for the other side has already shattered spending records. On one side, nearly the entire local Democratic establishment, including Mr. Sanders’s 2016 rival, Hillary Clinton, has lined up behind Mr. Latimer, the Westchester County executive. So has the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a pro-Israel lobby that has already spent $12 million — more than any other race in its history — to try to defeat Mr.

“This is what they sent us,” Oneida Sanders said, kneeling beside a heavy wooden chest in her living room. “These are Kennedy’s things.”Sgt. Kennedy Sanders’s belongings were shipped home to her parents after she was killed: Dog tags, identification cards, Polaroids of her family. Gold jewelry and a quarter that appeared to be stained with blood. The items offered a glimpse into the person, soldier and daughter that Kennedy was and who she had hoped to become.

Legislative auditors in Arkansas found that the purchase last year of a $19,000 lectern by Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders’s office potentially violated state laws, according to a report released on Monday. But the findings may be moot after the state attorney general, Tim Griffin, said last week that state purchasing laws do not apply to the governor or other executive branch officials. Ms. Sanders, a Republican, faced sharp scrutiny for the purchase, even from members of her own party. The legislative auditors said that their report would be forwarded to the Sixth Judicial District prosecuting attorney and to Mr. Griffin’s office.

The chief executives of three major pharmaceutical companies are set to appear in front of the Senate health committee on Thursday to defend how much they charge for drugs in the United States, drawing them further into a confrontation with lawmakers and the Biden administration over the cost of some of the most widely used prescription medications. The three executives scheduled to testify — Joaquin Duato of Johnson & Johnson, Robert M. Davis of Merck and Christopher Boerner of Bristol Myers Squibb — are expected to clash with the health committee’s chairman, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, an independent who has made reining in drug prices a signature cause of his late-career years in Congress. Mr. Sanders plans to focus the hearing on why drug prices are higher in the United States than in other wealthy countries. His staff has singled out several widely used drugs, including Eliquis, a blood thinner made by Bristol Myers Squibb, and Januvia, a diabetes drug from Merck, that can be bought for much less in Canada and Europe than in the United States.

Opinion | Analyzing Bernie Sanders’s Vision for Mideast Peace

To the Editor:Re “Palestinians Must Have Hope for a Brighter Future,” by Bernie Sanders (Opinion guest essay, Nov. 23):Senator Sanders states what has been obvious for decades to all who support two states living in peace, prosperity and dignity: The violence must end. In this long struggle, extremists on both sides scuttle every hope for compromise and ensure the endless cycle of murder and retaliation. The U.S. can pressure Israel by curtailing or attaching conditions to aid. Senator Sanders and other peace-loving Americans must call on those Arab states that support Palestinian extremists to end their support and work toward genuine transformation. I support Senator Sanders’s vision, but he doesn’t propose a concrete path forward, without which nothing will change.

The Senate on Tuesday confirmed Dr. Monica M. Bertagnolli, a cancer surgeon who currently leads the National Cancer Institute, as the next director of the National Institutes of Health, overriding the objections of Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, the chairman of the Senate health committee. The vote was 62 to 36, with Mr. Sanders voting no. on a permanent basis, after Dr. Bernadine P. Healy, who served under President George H.W. She will take over an agency that has been the target of political attacks by Republicans, who have accused its scientists of intentionally downplaying the possibility that Covid-19 was the result of a laboratory leak. “I think no one wants to know what the true origin of the last Covid pandemic was more than the biomedical research community,” Dr. Bertagnolli told Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, the top Republican on the health committee, during her confirmation hearing last month.

His caving to extreme members of the party augurs poorly for measures like Ukraine aid and cannabis banking. Republicans including Representative Matt Gaetz and Representative Andy Biggs have already denied calls for new Ukraine aid. By siding with further-right members, McCarthy gives them more power to hold the line.

Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Sept 20 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Bob Iger can’t get off the roller coaster. Walt Disney’s (DIS.N) chief executive plans to double the Magic Kingdom’s investment in theme parks and other experiences to $60 billion over the course of about 10 years. On the other, Disney’s dwindling cash and the increasing demands for it is cause for concern. One issue is that Disney’s free cash flow has plummeted. No wonder adding theme parks to the list is making shareholders skittish.

Cazoo’s debt fix points to bumpy ride
  + stars: | 2023-09-20 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
That’s not the fate of shareholders in UK-based and U.S.-listed Cazoo (CZOO.N), which has just announced a brutal debt restructuring. Under the deal announced on Wednesday, bondholders will swap $630 million of convertible notes for $200 million of fresh debt and a large slug of the equity. The debt cut will do little to fix Cazoo’s rickety engine. Although the company had 195 million pounds of cash at the end of June, it burnt through over 50 million pounds in the previous six months. And revenue this year is expected to fall nearly 40%, as customers racked by high interest rates tighten their belts.

Pearson’s pricey CEO will rile shareholders

LONDON, Sept 20 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Pearson (PSON.L) is baiting shareholders with its choice of new CEO. The 57-year-old will receive 13 million pounds’ worth of cash and restricted shares on top of his normal pay as compensation for leaving Microsoft. Such generosity is questionable considering that in April nearly half of the London-listed company’s shareholders voted against a pay package of more than 8 million pounds for Bird. Despite its greater digital focus, Pearson’s revenue is expected to flatline over the next three years, LSEG forecasts show. UK annual inflation fell to 6.7% in August, from 6.8% in July, confounding market expectations of a rise to 7%. Senator Bernie Sanders speaks to the crowd as United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain and UAW Region 1 Director LaShawn English listen during a rally in support of striking UAW members in Detroit, Michigan, U.S., September 15, 2023. The United Auto Workers on Friday began strikes at Detroit carmakers Ford Motor (F.N), General Motors (GM.N) and Stellantis (STLAM.MI). Sanders voiced enthusiasm for their biggest demand: moving to a four-day workweek while maintaining five-day pay. UAW members pushed for this policy in the middle of the last century during a prior wave of automation. With artificial intelligence poised to reshape white-collar jobs, more workers might come to see things Sanders’s way.

Opinion | Why Joe Biden Needs a Primary Challenger
  + stars: | 2023-05-08 | by ( Peter Beinart | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
To understand why progressives should challenge Joe Biden in the upcoming Democratic presidential primary, remember what happened during the last one. Mr. Sanders’s supporters joined Mr. Biden’s allies in working groups that crafted a common agenda on the economy, education, health care, criminal justice, immigration and climate change. From those task forces came what Barack Obama called “the most progressive platform of any major-party nominee in history.” And that progressivism continued into Mr. Biden’s presidency. With rare exceptions, Mr. Biden hasn’t challenged the hawkish conventional wisdom that permeates Washington; he’s embodied it. America’s new cold war against Beijing may enjoy bipartisan support in Washington, but it doesn’t enjoy bipartisan support in the United States.
CNN —The Arkansas House of Representatives passed a bill on Wednesday that would require social media companies to verify their users’ ages and confirm that minors have permission from a parent or guardian before opening an account. The bill, dubbed the Social Media Safety Act, was passed by an overwhelming vote of 82-10, according to a tweet from the House account, and adds to the swell of efforts by state and federal lawmakers to regulate social media platforms and protect children online. If the Arkansas bill is signed into law, social media companies would be required to use third-party vendors to verify Arkansas residents’ ages – regardless of whether or not they are minors. For users younger than 18, the platform must obtain the consent of their parent or guardian in order to open an account for them. Similar bills have also been proposed in Connecticut and Ohio, where the legislation would require a guardian’s consent for minors younger than 16 to have accounts.
