Those companies already count many of Macy's shoppers as their customers, according to an analysis of credit card data by Earnest Analytics. Macy's closures could put as much as $2 billion of market share up for grabs. The department store's net sales were $23.1 billion in the most recent fiscal year, and it said the 150 stores that it's closing account for less than 10% of sales. About 63% of Macy's stores have a T.J. Maxx or Marshalls within a one-mile radius, according to an analysis by Jefferies. Off-price stores also draw a similar customer, which tends to be more affluent.

Cars sit parked in front of a Macy's store at Bay Fair Mall on February 27, 2024 in San Leandro, California. Arkhouse Management, a real-estate-focused investing firm said on Sunday it and Brigade Capital Management have raised their offer for Macy's after the department store chain rebuffed their prior proposal as too low. "The Macy's Inc Board will carefully review and evaluate the latest proposal," Macy's said in a separate statement. Like other legacy department store operators, Macy's has struggled to compete against younger, online competitors or peers with smaller brick-and-mortar footprints. This has given Arkhouse and Brigade an opening to put pressure on Macy's to explore a sale.

Macy's on Thursday said it will cut about 3.5% of its workforce and close five of its namesake mall locations as the legacy department store moves to trim costs and turn around slowing sales. The move will affect approximately 2,350 positions across its corporate office and stores, company spokesman Chris Grams said. The majority of those — roughly 500 —are its namesake stores, followed by 158 Bluemercury stores and 56 Bloomingdale's stores. The department store chain's footprint has gotten smaller in recent years, however. He said since that 2020 announcement, Macy's had closed about 80 namesake locations and had plans to soon close another five.

It's true the operating margin is expected to contract a bit from Tuesday's results. Latin America sales fell 31% due to lower sales volume that was only partially offset by higher prices. Higher prices also aided profitability, despite the dual headwinds of lower volumes and an unfavorable product mix. The adjusted operating profit margin for the fourth quarter is expected to be lower versus the third quarter result. All told, we believe the operating margin consensus on Wall Street needs an upward revision.

Jackson, Mississippi, led the nation in the rate of population decline from July 2021 to July 2022. Though the Midwest is experiencing a "doom loop" in many of its cities, in which remote work has slowed the economies of Midwestern cities, only one Midwestern city made the top ten cities and towns shrinking at the fastest rate between 2021 and 2022. In an analysis of nearly 20,000 cities, towns, villages, and boroughs across the US, the Census Bureau found that places in Utah and Louisiana saw especially sharp declines. Some residents left following the city's water crisis, sparked by poor infrastructure and climate change. Three Utah cities outside of the Salt Lake City area — Taylorsville, Orem, and Sandy — also had above 2% losses in population.

While today's technology doesn't allow for battery-powered long-range airliners, plenty of companies are working on short- and medium-range electric aircraft. The global market for electric aircraft is estimated to have reached $7.9 billion in 2021, according to market research company MarketsandMarkets.
