NEW YORK (AP) — As host of “The Daily Show” from 1999 to 2015, Jon Stewart changed comedy — and arguably journalism, too — with sharp, satirical takes on politics and current events. Catching lightning again will be difficult — particularly at a time when late-night television is greatly diminished as a cultural force and others, some from Stewart's family tree, are now competitors. It can be even tougher when, as Salon critic Melanie McFarland put it, the current Jon Stewart is forced to compete with memories of the old Jon Stewart. “Jon Stewart totally changed the face of late-night,” says Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture at Syracuse University. “There's something so 2010 about Jon Stewart now,” he says.

NEW YORK (AP) — Comedian Jon Stewart is rewinding the clock, returning to “The Daily Show” as a weekly host and executive producing through the 2024 U.S. elections cycle. Comedy Central on Wednesday said Stewart will host the topical TV show, the perch he ruled for 16 years starting in 1999, every Monday starting Feb. 12. Two former correspondents in particular got massive boosts — Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert. '”The show's abrupt end was reportedly triggered due to clashes between Stewart and Apple over its coverage of stories around China and artificial intelligence. A spokesperson did not immediately respond to questions about who will host “The Daily Show” after the November election.

CNN —Authorities have received a flood of evidence and information related to the suspect charged in some of the Gilgo Beach killings since his arrest, the Suffolk County District Attorney told CNN on Monday. Authorities have had Heuermann on their radar for more than a year as investigators gathered enough evidence to make an arrest. The suspect’s wife and children are cooperating with the investigation, according to Carter. Authorities later said they believed Gilbert’s death may have been accidental and unrelated to the Gilgo Beach homicides. “We’re going to continue to work this case and work the entire Gilgo investigation,” Carter said.

Heuermann has not been charged in the case, but the investigation “is expected to be resolved soon,” the document states. I can only imagine what you’ve had to endure over the last decade regarding knowing that your killer was still loose. “For each of the murders, he got an individual burner phone, and he used that to communicate with the victims. New York CNN —Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has called on the US Food and Drug Administration to investigate the high caffeine content of PRIME Energy drinks, which he claims are being targeted to children as “one of the summer’s hottest beverages for kids.”Schumer said cans of PRIME Energy drinks contain more than double the caffeine of a can of Red Bull and six times more caffeine than a can of Coca-Cola. The company does not recommend the drinks for anyone under the age of 18, according to information on its website. “What this drink is giving you is a caffeine rush, it is a high, followed by a crash,” Dr. Bracho-Sanchez said. On the company’s website, a fact page states, “PRIME Energy contains 200mg of caffeine, per 12 oz. The FDA says 400 milligrams of caffeine a day for healthy adults is “not generally associated with dangerous, negative effects.”CNN has reached out to the FDA for comment.

The US Coast Guard has convened a Marine Board of Investigation to probe the implosion – the “highest level of investigation the Coast Guard conducts,” US Coast Guard chief investigator Capt. Military experts found debris from the ill-fated submersible about 1,600 feet from the bow of the Titanic on Thursday, the US Coast Guard previously said. “This case has been extremely complex, involving a coordinated international, interagency and private sector response in an unforgiving and difficult to access region of the ocean,” US Coast Guard Rear Adm. John Mauger, the First Coast Guard District commander, said Sunday. The Coast Guard announced the vessel suffered a “catastrophic implosion,” killing everyone on board. “The content of those voice recordings could be useful in our investigation,” Fox said. Communications between the submersible and its mother ship will also likely be scrutinized. The ship could communicate with the submersible by text messages, and it’s required to communicate every 15 minutes, according to the archived website of OceanGate Expeditions. The vehicles will work to map out the vessel’s debris field, which is more than 2 miles deep in the North Atlantic, Mauger said. When asked for comment about Stanley’s email, a spokesman for OceanGate told CNN they were unable to provide any additional information at this time.

CNN —An investigation has been launched into allegations of employment discrimination and a hostile work environment at the National Football League (NFL), according to a joint statement from New York Attorney General Letitia James and California Attorney General Rob Bonta. It comes just over a year since the NFL was warned by a coalition of six attorneys general to take “swift action” to improve conditions for female employees. The attorneys general on Thursday issued subpoenas to the NFL seeking relevant information, the statement said. “No person should ever have to endure harassment, discrimination, or objectification in the workplace,” said NY Attorney General James. “No matter how powerful or influential, no institution is above the law, and we will ensure the NFL is held accountable.”“California will not tolerate any form of discrimination,” California Attorney General Bonta said.
Within weeks of her arrival in Sudan, fighting broke out in the country, leading to a rushed evacuation of diplomats and rapidly deteriorating conditions. “The State Department has evacuated mainly diplomats and … American citizens that have been working in Sudan,” Kaila said. “But in terms of the rest of the American citizens that are living here, we haven’t received any direct evacuation plans. Her concern now is being able to travel safely to either the capital city of Khartoum or to Port Sudan for any chance of being evacuated. Kaila is hoping to begin the dangerous journey to Port Sudan to make it on an evacuation ship in the coming days.
There are few living children’s authors who have connected as deeply to their readers as Judy Blume. That’s the argument of “Judy Blume Forever,” a new documentary from Davina Pardo and Leah Wolchok that pays unwavering tribute to Blume and her imprint on young adult literature. It’s not uncommon to hear fans of Blume’s work say that reading her books felt as though she was speaking directly to them through the pages. This is thanks, in no small part, to her frank discussion of mature themes that, at the time she was writing, were considered unusual for what we now call Y.A. novels: adolescent sexuality, religion, disability, bullying, and — in many of her books — the unfair expectations of purity and obedience that parents and society place on children.
CNN —The chief executive of the Madison Square Garden Entertainment Corporation has doubled down on using facial recognition at its venues to bar lawyers suing the group from attending events. “At Madison Square Garden, if you’re suing us, we’re just asking of you – please don’t come until you’re done with your argument with us,” he said. Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall are world-renowned venues and should treat all patrons who purchased tickets with fairness and respect. Madison Square Garden is the home of the New York Knicks, Rangers, professional boxing, and college basketball teams. What facial recognition does is looks at, you know, recognizes your face, and says you know, are you someone who’s on this list.”Dolan claimed the State Liquor Authority has threatened MSG’s license over its use of facial recognition technology.
Nurses at two other area hospitals, Mount Sinai Hospital and Montefiore Bronx, are still due to strike after not reaching agreements. The new tentative agreement at Morningside and West brings the anticipated number of nurses to strike down from 8,700 to about 7,125. A Mount Sinai spokesperson told CNN on Saturday the hospital system is actively bargaining with the Mount Sinai Morningside and West campuses under separate union agreements. Another six will be transferred Sunday from the NICUs at Mount Sinai Hospital and Mount Sinai West, the spokesperson said. “In addition, we have transferred close to 100 patients from the affected hospitals – The Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai West and Mount Sinai Morningside – to unaffected hospitals within the Mount Sinai system and partner hospitals in NYC and we continue to safely discharge patients who were schedule to go home.” All elective surgeries have been postponed, the spokesperson said.
New York CNN —Famed Manhattan hospital Mount Sinai is moving newborns in their intensive care unit to other hospitals ahead of a planned New York nursing union strike. The impact is great.”But the union says management from the main Mount Sinai hospital campus walked away from the negotiating table just after midnight Friday — and also canceled bargaining sessions scheduled for the day. The union said it doesn’t know if Mount Sinai management plans to negotiate over the weekend. The five New York City hospitals set for the nursing strike Monday are Mount Sinai, Mount Sinai Morningside and West, Montefiore, BronxCare and Flushing Hospital Medical Center. The Mount Sinai spokesperson did not comment on Hagan’s statement about management walking away from talks.
He says that while being a comedy writer helps him make light of it, the system could be better. Being an immigrant comedy writer or comedian is so absurd. I recently got married to an American comedy writer, and she writes for "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver." Applying to be a late-night writer is a pretty secretive processMost late-night shows will invite you to submit a sample. That spun up "The Colbert Report," and then all the other late-night shows after that always had an opinion on politics.
The tentative agreements are in addition to that reached Sunday for union nurses at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. More than 1,300 nurses at the Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn have reached a tentative agreement on a three-year contract, according to a statement from the NYSNA. A tentative deal has also been reached at the Richmond University Medical Center in Staten Island, the union said. Negotiations continue at BronxCare Health System, Flushing Hospital Medical Center, Montefiore Bronx, Mount Sinai Hospital, and Mount Sinai Morningside and West. Mount Sinai announced it is starting to postpone some elective surgeries and appointments in preparation of the nurses strike.

CNN —A former co-owner of a Massachusetts compounding pharmacy was sentenced Thursday for what authorities said was his role in a deadly, multistate fungal meningitis outbreak in 2012. Conigliaro was co-owner, vice president and general manager of the now-defunct New England Compounding Center, which authorities said was behind the outbreak. Nearly 800 people in 20 states were diagnosed with fungal meningitis or other fungal infections in 2012 after receiving injections from contaminated vials of medicine manufactured by the NECC, the US Attorney’s Office said. More than 100 patients have died, making it the largest public health crisis caused by a pharmaceutical drug, according to the US Attorney’s Office. Through that deceit, the company was able to “operate in a slipshod, unsafe manner, ultimately leading to a tragic outbreak of fungal meningitis,” the Office said.
