Protesters left a pro-Palestinian encampment at the University of Southern California early Sunday after they were surrounded by police and told they could face arrest if they didn't go. The atmosphere on the private university campus had largely remained calm since, while attention turned to arrests at the University of California, Los Angeles. Administrators later canceled the entire main-stage commencement planned for May 10, when 65,000 people were expected to gather to celebrate graduates. Access to the private campus has largely been restricted for people not affiliated with the university since late April. Early Friday, several dozen counter-protesters had set up outside the encampment, playing scenes from the Oct. 7 Hamas attack in Israel on a screen, Annenberg Media reported.

A short time later, the house exploded and burst into flames, with multiple mayday calls coming from the firefighters trapped inside. Crews rushed in to try to rescue them from the debris that covered them, but one firefighter was killed and nine others were injured, Loudoun County Fire and Rescue officials said in a news release. Authorities did not say if they believe the propane tank leak caused the explosion. After firefighters found the leak in the underground propane tank, they requested a hazardous materials response team and additional units and safety officers. “This is believed to be an isolated incident and there is no ongoing danger to the community,” Loudoun County Fire and Rescue said in a statement.

Police responding to the Uvalde, Texas, shooting showed "no urgency," a DOJ report found. Uvalde school district officers arrived within three minutes of Ramos' arrival at the school and ran toward the classroom, but as they approached, Ramos fired from inside the classroom. Later that night, Justice Department officials privately briefed family members at a community center in Uvalde before the findings were made public. Greg Abbott initially praised the courage of officers' response and blame was later cast heavily on local authorities in Uvalde. The 376 officers at the scene included state police, Uvalde police, school officers and U.S. Border Patrol agents.

CNN —Hye Minyi can still vividly recall what happened in Itaewon, South Korea, on the night of October 29, 2022. Whether the disaster in Itaewon last year will put a dent in this growing popularity is yet to be seen. “We are extremely concerned that there could be a repeat of the Itaewon tragedy,” said Shibuya mayor Ken Hasebe. The Itaewon crowd crush was South Korea’s worst peacetime disaster since the sinking of a ferry in 2014 killed 304 people – among them 250 students and teachers from the Danwon State High School. Lee is certain of one thing, however – that she is “never going back to the area again.”“For me, Halloween and the Itaewon tragedy are (inextricably) linked,” she said.

These people were employees of GoStudent, an Austria-based online-tutoring startup that had quickly become the darling of the European tech scene. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Urías was arrested on a felony charge of corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant, a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman said Tuesday. Urías did not travel with the Dodgers to Miami, where they open a three-game series against the Marlins on Tuesday night. Urías was arrested late Sunday night by Department of Public Safety officers in Exposition Park, south of downtown Los Angeles. Other than acknowledging “an incident involving Julio Urías,” the Dodgers have declined to comment. Urías helped the Dodgers win the World Series during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, going 4-0 with a 1.17 ERA in 23 postseason innings.

This “prevention through deterrence” framework risks worsening the humanitarian crisis at the border. Mr. Biden must change course, and that begins by stopping Mr. Abbott. The president should order the immediate removal of the lethal razor wire and obstructions in the Rio Grande and ensure that Border Patrol are unimpeded by Texas Department of Public Safety officers— today. And I can see why it might be tempting to allow the governor to assume ownership over the Texas border rather than pursue a public confrontation on an issue that is this politically charged. Be on the right side of history, demonstrate the kind of strong, decisive leadership that Americans are desperate for, and the politics will follow.

Amazon launched its Prime Air drone delivery program ten years ago. Prime Air's safety teams have been hit hard by Amazon's far-reaching layoffs, employees said. The drone safety team cuts, combined with stepped-up pressure to meet delivery targets, have generated new concerns about the potential dangers the program poses and thrown into question Amazon's stated commitment to safety, the employees said. Prime Air has previously faced criticism from employees who say the pressure from executives to meet ambitious goals for drone delivery has at times superseded safety considerations. Even before the layoffs, Prime Air was struggling, this employee added.
Capitol police officer Howard Liebengood, 51, died by suicide days after the Jan. 6 riots. The DOJ on Monday ruled his suicide is a line-of-duty death, the Washington Post reported. The designation, the first under a new law, allows death benefits to be paid to his family. The 15-year law enforcement veteran was one of four officers who took their own lives following the violent riots. Law enforcement officers have a high rate of suicide — the third highest by profession, according to the suicide prevention group Zero Attempts.
A man was killed by New York City police officers in the famed Coney Island area after he allegedly threatened to shoot two women, police said. Three units responded to the corner of West 36th Street and Neptune Avenue, including one police marked vehicle with two uniformed officers and two unmarked vehicles manned by public safety officers, Maddrey said. As soon as the units arrived to the corner, officers saw a male with a gun. When officers exited their vehicles to approach him, he “immediately starts shooting at the officers,” Maddrey said. The suspect eventually got down on the ground, but continued to shoot at the officers.
