Remains found in a tomb in northwestern Spain are likely to belong to a ninth-century bishop believed to have helped create the Camino de Santiago, one of Christianity’s most popular pilgrimages, a new study has found. News of the discovery reached King Alfonso II of the neighboring region of Asturias, who marched with his court from Oviedo to Santiago. The 90 mile royal pilgrimage established what is today known as the “Primitive Way”, the oldest path used by pilgrims of the Camino, or Way of St. James. Theodomir’s existence had been hotly debated until 1955, when Spanish archaeologist Manuel Chamoso Lamas discovered a tombstone underneath Santiago de Compostela’s cathedral inscribed with his name. Perez-Ramallo told El Pais newspaper that there was a “98% likelihood of it being Theodomir.”

Now, new evidence from a skull more than 4,000 years old has revealed that ancient Egyptian physicians may have tried to treat certain cancers with surgery. “We can see that ancient Egyptian medicine was not solely based on herbal remedies like medicine in other ancient civilizations,” said Badr, who was not involved in the new research. “There is an urgent need to reevaluate the history of Egyptian medicine using these scientific methodologies,” Badr said. The earliest recorded observation of cancer is in an ancient Egyptian medical text known as the Edwin Smith Surgical Papyrus, which dates back to around 3000 BC to 2500 BC. But there was none for the breast cancer patient’s tumors, Camarós said.

Fluctuating disease rates, innovative treatments and talk of “moonshots” in the White House may make cancer seem like a modern scourge. But a new discovery highlights how humans dealt with the illness and hunted for cures as far back as the time of the ancient Egyptians. Scientists led by Edgard Camarós, a paleopathologist at the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain were studying an approximately 4,600-year-old Egyptian skull when they found signs of brain cancer and its treatment. This discovery, reported in a study published Wednesday in the journal Frontiers in Medicine, suggests that ancient Egyptians studied brain cancer using surgery. If the cuts were made while the person was alive, they may have even attempted to treat it.

Demonstrators took to the streets in at least four cities on Sunday to complain about hours-long power cuts and increasing food scarcity. The island has seen frequent power cuts and shortages of food, fuel, and medicine since the Covid-19 pandemic, prompting Cubans to flee to the United States in record numbers. US diplomats said Sunday they were monitoring the protests and called on the Cuban government to listen to the demonstrators. The Cuban government, which typically does not allow organized dissent, did not say how many protesters had been arrested. After island-wide demonstrations in the summer of 2021, more than 1,000 Cubans were put on trial and convicted of rising up against the communist-run government, according to human rights groups.

Presidential candidate for La Libertad Avanza Javier Milei looks on during a presidential debate on October 01, 2023 in Santiago del Estero, Argentina. Argentine dollar-denominated bonds were broadly lower Monday after the country's presidential election threw up another surprise result and spelled more uncertainty ahead. Economy Minister Sergio Massa of the ruling Peronist coalition took 36.6% of Sunday's first-round vote, ahead of radical libertarian Javier Milei on 30%, while center-right candidate Patricia Bullrich received 23.8%. It means Massa and Milei will now go head-to-head in a run-off vote on Nov. 19. Financial stocks opened lower before trimming losses, while U.S.-listed stocks of Argentine firms including argicultural business Cresud were lower.

[1/3] Argentina Presidential candidate Sergio Massa of Union por la Patria party attends the presidential debate ahead of the October 22 general elections, at the National University of Santiago del Estero, in Santiago del Estero, Argentina October 1, 2023. Under Argentine law, two mandatory debates have to be held before the 22 October presidential election, where Argentine voters will be presented with radically different visions for the future. With growing skepticism among voters, the debate on economy, education, human rights and "democratic coexistence" took place with a pre-established format and strict rules that allowed little time for candidates to elaborate their points. On education, all candidates supported public education and on human rights they maintained their differences on the recent history of Argentina. The second debate addressing security, work and "human development, housing and environmental protection" will be held next Sunday in Buenos Aires.

Employees work on a Ryanair plane preparing to take off at the Rosalia De Castro airport in Santiago de Compostela, Spain June 24, 2022. The Irish airline, Europe's largest by passenger numbers, cited Dublin Airport Authority's increased passenger charges and a failure to deliver a "meaningful" environmental incentive scheme as motivation for the decision. The Dublin Airport Authority said in a statement that Ryanair was exaggerating the size of increased charges and that the authority was consulting with airlines about a proposed scheme to incentivise lower-emission aircraft in 2024. It said Dublin Airport's passenger numbers had recovered to pre-pandemic levels and that it had no need to incentivise new growth given a capacity limit under the airport's planning permission. Ryanair frequently cuts capacity from airports during disputes over charges and typically allocates aircraft to airports and regions offering the best growth incentives.

As part of a review of the EU's 2021-2027 budget, the European Commission in June proposed 50 billion euros in grants and loans for Ukraine to keep Kyiv financed as it fights off Russian aggression. This year, the EU will pay out 18 billion euros to Ukraine in highly concessional loans, but, if the proposed 50 billion total stays, Ukraine will only get 12.5 billion annually from 2024 to 2027. She said the EU budget review should also add money for military mobility -- roads, ports, bridges and airports that allow armed forces to move around quickly -- as the 1.7 billion euros originally allocated for the purpose was insufficient. "We see the need for military mobility infrastructure increasing. It exceeds one billion euros just for Lithuania," she said.

European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde speaks to the media following the Governing Council's monetary policy meeting at the ECB headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany, July 27, 2023. Lagarde stigmatised the leak at the start of the two-day meeting, a criticism that was echoed by several colleagues. But as borrowing costs were pushed higher, more policymakers expressed reservations about further hikes, the sources said. Lagarde has spared no effort in trying to woo her colleagues. In return, she asked for governors to stop trashing policy decisions once taken, keep internal disputes out of the media and put their phones away while colleagues were speaking.

EU fiscal rules underpin the value of the euro used by 20 countries and set a limit on budget deficits of 3% of GDP and a public debt limit of 60% of GDP. However, most EU countries exceed these limits as two years of the COVID-19 pandemic and the energy price crisis have both required massive government spending. The main clash is between Germany, which wants annual debt reduction benchmarks that are the same for all, and France, which believes individually negotiated debt reduction paths are the way to go and that one-size-fits-all policies do not work. She said 70% of the text of the new rules has been agreed in technical work over the summer.
