The Israeli military has signalled that the next steps of its campaign against Palestinian militant group Hamas need not be a long anticipated ground incursion. The siege, which human rights groups have criticized for breaking humanitarian law, comes in response to a brutal terrorist attack by Hamas on Oct. 7. The death toll from the conflict so far has risen to at least 1,400 people killed in Israel and more than 2,700 people killed in Gaza. The Israeli government says that Hamas is holding at least 199 hostages kidnapped from Israel. Israel's Gaza evacuation order could amount to a crime of "forcible transfer" in breach of international law, according to a spokesperson for the U.N. human rights office.

Sadly, we now know that at least 11 American citizens were among those killed—many of whom made a second home in Israel. While we are still working to confirm, we believe it is likely that American citizens may be among those being held by Hamas. For American citizens who are currently in Israel, the State Department is providing consular assistance as well as updated security alerts. The ties between Israel and the United States run deep.

Bulk carrier Glory ran aground in the Suez Canal on Monday morning, according to shipping agency Leth, which said efforts to refloat the vessel were underway. An employee of the Suez Canal Authority, who could not be named as the news had not been officially announced, told CNBC that other ships in the canal were still able to pass the grounded Glory by around 7:30 a.m. London time. Arabic news channel Al-Arabiya cited Osama Rabie, chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, as saying that the ship had run aground but was being floated, according to a Google translation. The Suez Canal is one of the world's most important waterways, with its 120 miles hosting 30% of global shipping container traffic and 12% of all global trade worth about $1 trillion annually. In March 2021, a massive 220,000-ton tanker called Ever Given got stuck across the Suez Canal for six days, causing its longest-ever closure due to a ship and holding up some $60 billion of trade."
