It's almost in the definition of exploration," he told BI in a recent interview. AdvertisementA communications firm representing OceanGate wrote in a brief email to BI that "OceanGate has suspended all exploration and commercial operations." Read previewAn early passenger on OceanGate's Titan submersible didn't realize how close he was to experiencing the "catastrophic" failure that sealed the vessel's fate in 2023 until a year after the incident. In April 2019, Karl Stanley, a fellow submersible expert, joined his peer, OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, near the Bahamas to take a dive in an early iteration of the Titan vessel. Stanley, Rush, and two other passengers successfully plunged more than 12,000 feet — a depth that closes in on the Titanic's wreckage, which sits at the bottom of the Atlantic at about 12,500 feet. According to Wired, this defect forced Rush to delay the trip to the Titanic and build another Titan submersible. "I just surfaced from a 4-hour dive," Stanley wrote to BI on Thursday.

The housing market will see a stronger, prolonged spring homebuying rush this year, real estate pros say. Buyers and sellers are slowly wading back into the market as mortgage rates edge lower. That's not what economists had originally expected for the housing market this year. "Until we see mortgage rates really improve, we don't expect owners to come back very, very quickly." Affordability conditions have been steadily improving after a bad year for the housing market.

UPS plans on hiring 100,000 seasonal workers to beef up its workforce for the holiday season. Working as a seasonal employee can be the first step toward a $170,000-per-year pay package. Thanks to a new contract for UPS workers that was negotiated by the Teamsters union, some full-time UPS drivers are now earning a pay package worth $170,000 a year, including benefits. Hourly pay will start at $23 for seasonal package drivers and $21 for package handlers. Despite increased pay for the seasonal UPS workers, the job market is still tight, and it's uncertain how challenging it will be to find workers, Lavery said.

That’s how much paid sick leave some freight rail workers are demanding from the rail companies before they sign new contracts. Rail workers say years of grievances about workforce cuts, coupled with new scheduling requirements, have pushed them to the brink of exhaustion. But if any of the unions decides to strike, all rail unions will honor the work stoppage. Kennedy said the union had never agreed to higher wages at the expense of a benefit like paid sick leave. “A rail strike, even one of short duration, would be catastrophic,” said John Drake, a vice president at the Chamber of Commerce.
