Manhattan federal prosecutors and lawyers for Rudy Giuliani proposed that a retired federal judge serve as the outside authority to review materials seized in a criminal investigation into the former New York City mayor’s dealings with Ukrainian officials. Prosecutors said that lawyers for Mr. Giuliani and his associate, lawyer Victoria Toensing, whose devices were also seized, agreed with the selection. Robert Costello, a lawyer for Mr. Giuliani, said he looked forward to working with Ms. Jones. “Both the Mayor and I know Judge Jones and we both have total confidence that she will do her job in a thorough, fair and professional way,” he added. A lawyer for Ms. Toensing and a spokesman for the Manhattan U.S. attorney’s office declined to comment.

A federal judge Friday denied Rudy Giuliani’s bid to review materials seized in a criminal investigation into his dealings with former Ukrainian officials, saying Mr. Giuliani’s status as a lawyer to former President Donald Trump didn’t exempt him from a search warrant. “[L]awyers are not immune from searches in criminal investigations,” Judge Oetken wrote in his order, which also rejected a similar request from a lawyer and associate of Mr. Giuliani, Victoria Toensing, whose devices were also seized last month. Federal agents executed search warrants on April 28 at the New York City apartment and office of Mr. Giuliani, an unusual escalation of a yearslong investigation by Manhattan federal prosecutors into the former mayor. Mr. Giuliani has said he never served as a foreign agent and has denied wrongdoing. A lawyer for Mr. Giuliani didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Touting his father's success in reducing crime in New York City before leaving office in 2001, the younger Giuliani said he would make New York state a better place, particularly for businesses hit hard by the pandemic. Giuliani's candidacy may set up a contest between two prominent New York political families. The current governor, Andrew Cuomo, is the son of Mario Cuomo, who served three terms as the state's highest elective official.

Lawyers for Rudy Giuliani are pushing back against a Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s office investigation that led to a federal raid of his home and office last month, asking a federal judge to compel prosecutors to disclose their underlying evidence and reasoning for the search warrants. The request came in a letter filed Monday in Manhattan federal court as part of legal proceedings over the search warrants, which are unusual for prosecutors to seek for a working attorney like Mr. Giuliani, who was the personal lawyer for former President Donald Trump and a former New York mayor. Mr. Giuliani has said he has never lobbied for anyone in Ukraine. Prosecutors have asked for an outside arbiter—known as a special master—to be appointed to review the materials seized in April for attorney-client privilege. But Mr. Giuliani’s lawyers wrote that no such review should proceed until they have more information about the April warrants and also a secret 2019 search warrant, which they say was used to obtain access to Mr. Giuliani’s iCloud account but wasn’t subject to special-master review.

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden blamed the Trump administration for ongoing problems at the U.S.-Mexico border, citing its failure to cooperate and share critical information during the presidential transition period. In an exclusive interview airing Friday with TODAY show co-anchor Craig Melvin, Biden said his administration inherited “one god-awful mess at the border” from former President Donald Trump. He also acknowledged that his administration has struggled to reunite the children and families who had been separated under Trump policies. Melvin also asked Biden if he was briefed about the search warrants executed at Rudy Giuliani’s apartment and office and found out about it when the news broke. “I would not interfere in any way — order or try to stop any investigation the Justice Department had underway.

Manhattan federal prosecutors are seeking to examine Rudy Giuliani’s communications with an array of former Ukrainian officials, people familiar with the matter said, as investigators home in on whether the former mayor’s push to remove a U.S. diplomat in Kyiv violated foreign lobbying rules. Former President Donald Trump ordered Ms. Yovanovitch’s removal in the spring of 2019 after an extensive push by Mr. Giuliani, who personally lobbied the president and then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. The warrants also sought evidence including communications with or regarding associates who worked with Mr. Giuliani to push for Ms. Yovanovitch’s ouster, as well as for an investigation by Ukrainian authorities into the Biden family’s activities in the country, the people familiar with the warrants said. President Biden was at the time considered one of Mr. Trump’s top Democratic rivals. The warrants specifically sought evidence related to former Ukrainian prosecutors general Viktor Shokin and Yuriy Lutsenko, former Ukrainian prosecutor Kostiantyn Kulyk and former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, the people said.

Federal investigators executed a search warrant Wednesday morning at the New York City apartment of Rudy Giuliani, his lawyer said, an escalation of a yearslong investigation by Manhattan federal prosecutors into the former mayor. The execution of the search warrant was earlier reported by the New York Times and was confirmed by Mr. Giuliani’s lawyer, Robert Costello. Mr. Costello said authorities, who arrived at Mr. Giuliani’s apartment at 6 a.m., seized Mr. Giuliani’s electronic devices. Mr. Costello said the warrant sought communications between Mr. Giuliani and individuals including John Solomon, a columnist who was in communication with Mr. Giuliani about his effort to push for Ukrainian investigations of President Biden before he was elected. Ms. Toensing turned over her phone, and agents didn’t search the house, one of the people said.

Federal investigators in Manhattan executed a search warrant on Wednesday at the Upper East Side apartment of Rudolph W. Giuliani, the former New York City mayor who became President Donald J. Trump’s personal lawyer, stepping up a criminal investigation into Mr. Giuliani’s dealings in Ukraine, three people with knowledge of the matter said. One of the people said the investigators had seized Mr. Giuliani’s electronic devices. Executing a search warrant is an extraordinary move for prosecutors to take against a lawyer, let alone a lawyer for a former president, and it marks a major turning point in the long-running investigation into Mr. Giuliani. The federal authorities have been largely focused on whether Mr. Giuliani illegally lobbied the Trump administration in 2019 on behalf of Ukrainian officials and oligarchs, who at the same time were helping Mr. Giuliani search for dirt on Mr. Trump’s political rivals, including President Biden, who was then a leading candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination. had for months sought to secure a search warrant for Mr. Giuliani’s phones.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, personal attorney to U.S. President Donald Trump, speaks about the 2020 U.S. presidential election results during a news conference in Washington, U.S., November 19, 2020. A lawyer for Giuliani, Bob Costello, confirmed the search, saying the warrants were looking for evidence that his client failed to register as a foreign agent. Giuliani has come under intense criticism over the past six months for his central role in Trump's failed legal efforts to overturn his 2020 election defeat. Congress subpoenaed Giuliani, who admitted in a television interview that he had asked Ukraine's government to "target" Biden on Trump's behalf. One of his two children, former White House aide Andrew Giuliani, is planning to run for the Republican nomination for governor of New York next year.

NYGOP Chairman Nick Langworthy said in an interview that his singular focus is defeating Gov. Andrew Cuomo in next year’s statewide elections, adding he hopes for a consensus about his party’s candidates before year’s end. There are now more than twice as many Democrats in the state as Republicans, and the GOP hasn’t won a statewide office since Gov. Republicans also lost control of the state Senate majority in 2018, hampering the state party’s efforts to raise campaign money. In January, Mr. Cuomo reported he had $16.8 million in his war chest.

The email goes on to note that Hunter Biden, who is now the subject of a federal tax probe, netted more than $1.2 million for the year. It is not known what, if any, action Hunter Biden took in response to the email. There’s no indication that his work for the Burisma national gas company is part of the investigation, but the email obtained by NBC News raises fresh questions about Hunter Biden’s tax affairs. A spokesperson for the Biden transition team declined to comment when sent a list of questions, including whether Hunter Biden amended his 2014 returns. “In retrospect, look, I think that it was poor judgment on my part,” Hunter Biden said in the ABC News interview.
