New York CNN —Car manufacturer Stellantis is recalling 211,581 SUVs and pickup trucks over a software malfunction that could cause their electronic stability control systems to fail. The company said the issue stems from a defective anti-lock breaking system, which in turn deactivates the stability control system. Using a vehicle with a disabled stability system could increase the likelihood of a crash, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Thursday. Multiple studies have found electronic stability control systems tend to reduce fatal collisions, particularly single-vehicle and rollover crashes. The company said customers will be able to bring their cars in to the dealers to update their vehicle’s anti-lock braking systems for free.

New York CNN —Google is removing links to California news websites in reaction to proposed state legislation requiring big tech companies to pay news outlets for their content, the company announced Friday in a blog post. “It’s time they start paying market value for the journalism they are aggregating at no cost from local media.”Charles F. Champion, the president and CEO of the California News Publishers Association, said Google is suppressing California news. Google has not responded to CNN’s request for comment about the current state of talks with the Canadian government. The company had a similar reaction to a 2021 Australian law that would require platforms to compensate Australian news outlets for using their content. New York CNN —Longtime broadcast journalist Robert MacNeil, who covered some of the biggest headlines of the 20th century and co-anchored PBS nightly news for two decades, died on Friday, PBS announced. MacNeil “was an incredibly erudite reporter, anchor and writer who raised the bar for serious journalism in America,” Sharon Percy Rockefeller, president of NewsHour Productions, said Friday in a news release. Arriving at PBS in the early 1970’s, MacNeil began a decades-long partnership with fellow journalist Jim Lehrer, according to PBS The two led PBS coverage of the Senate’s Watergate Hearings in 1973. In 1975, the pair co-founded the MacNeil/Lehrer Report, a show that would later become PBS NewsHour. MacNeil sat at the helm alongside Lehrer before leaving in 1995, according to PBS.

New York CNN —AT&T has launched an investigation into the source of a data leak that includes personal information of 73 million current and former customers. In a news release Saturday morning, the telecommunications giant said the data was “released on the dark web approximately two weeks ago,” and contains information such as account holders’ Social Security numbers. “It is not yet known whether the data … originated from AT&T or one of its vendors,” the company added. “Currently, AT&T does not have evidence of unauthorized access to its systems resulting in exfiltration of the data set.”The data seems to have been from 2019 or earlier. The company said the leak shows approximately 7.6 million current account holders and 65.4 million former account holders were affected.

New York CNN —A federal judge on Thursday ordered Sam Bankman-Fried to repay more than $11 billion as part of his sentence for defrauding customers and investors in his failed crypto exchange FTX. In their sentencing memorandum earlier this month, federal prosecutors laid out their reasoning for seeking $11 billion in forfeiture. Unlike restitution, where the money from seized assets goes directly to victims, the money from forfeiture is taken by the government and absorbed into the US Treasury. It is unclear how much Bankman-Fried is currently worth, but it’s likely not anywhere near $11 billion. So far, the Department of Justice has redistributed about $4 billion to Madoff’s victims.

The show, which was released in November, featured 456 participants vying for a cash prize of $4.56 million. In recent years, each of his videos easily surpasses 100 million views, and at times has pushed half a billion.
