Cramer and others have been buzzing about a legal assessment from retired federal judge J. Michael Luttig saying the Senate can't hold an impeachment trial once Trump leaves office. Under the Senate rules, the upper chamber must prioritize the Trump trial once the House officially delivers its article of impeachment charging Trump with inciting rioters who stormed the Capitol. But the senator acknowledged that Republicans like him are also worried about backlash from Trump and his supporters as the impeachment trial approaches. Chief Justice John Roberts presided over President Trump's first impeachment trial in early 2021. Cramer said he doesn't think there are 17 GOP Senate votes who would join with all 50 Democrats to convict Trump.

Mark Zuckerberg started to consider indefinitely suspending President Donald Trump's Facebook account late on the night of Jan. 6, just hours after a mob of Trump's supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol. Earlier in the day, Facebook banned Trump's account for 24 hours. Executives at Facebook, Twitter and other companies say they believe they made the right decisions, but they also have reservations about their own power. Trump, in a video posted to the official White House Twitter account Wednesday, criticized "the efforts to censor, cancel and blacklist our fellow citizens." The Facebook and Twitter decisions were a response to a very specific situation, sources at both companies said.

Slideshow ( 2 images )WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States has charged 14 leaders of the international criminal gang MS-13 on terrorism charges, the U.S. Department of Justice said on Thursday, part of an intensified crackdown on the group. The indictment, filed in Central Islip, New York, and unsealed on Thursday, charged the individuals with conspiracies to support terrorists, commit acts of terrorism and finance terrorism, according to the department. The United States would “explore options for their extradition,” it said. In July, the department said it was stepping up a crackdown on the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) gang and would seek the death penalty against an accused New York gang leader facing murder charges. Critics of the administration’s tactics argue that the crackdown has also unlawfully detained immigrant teens accused of gang affiliation.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - While Congress acted to impeach him, President Donald Trump on Wednesday urged his supporters to shun violence as the National Guard prepared to deploy at least 20,000 troops in Washington for the Jan. 20 swearing-in of his successor Joe Biden. About 8,000 National Guard troops were on hand for Trump’s 2016 inauguration, Reuters reported at the time. While the House of Representatives debated a formal charge of “incitement of insurrection,” Trump and the Republican National Committee called for an end to violence ahead of the Inauguration. Incoming troops will be responsible for securing the city before Biden’s inauguration, with new fencing engulfing the Capitol area. Two officials said some National Guard troops were deputized as Capitol Police officers to carry out law enforcement functions if needed.

Then there is the more immediate concern: Law enforcement agencies owe the American people more regular updates on efforts to prevent further violence than they’ve received to date. For an administration that has failed time and again to perform the most simple tasks of governance, this halfhearted response is worrisome. Right now the priority must be reassurance, especially in light of last week’s systemic failure by multiple law enforcement agencies. Another question: How many members of law enforcement and the military participated in last week’s riot? One Secret Service officer is reportedly under investigation for posting comments on Facebook accusing lawmakers who confirmed Mr. Biden’s electoral victory of treason.

One week after his supporters stormed Capitol Hill in a deadly riot, and hours after his second impeachment in the House , President Donald Trump on Wednesday delivered his clearest condemnation yet of the Jan. 6 violence. The five-minute video, which appears to show Trump speaking from the Resolute Desk of the Oval Office, arrived as the president faces an upcoming trial in the Senate. He also did not mention his latest impeachment, which came less than a week before Biden is set to be inaugurated. "No true supporter of mine could ever endorse political violence, no true supporter of mine could ever disrespect law enforcement or our great American flag. No true supporter of mine could ever threaten or harass their fellow Americans," Trump said in the video.

WASHINGTON — Amid the sea of troubling facts, arrests and iconic images that have emerged in the days since the assault on the Capitol, one element remains largely absent: reassurances from some of the nation’s top national security officials. Neither the acting attorney general, Jeffrey A. Rosen, nor the F.B.I. director, Christopher A. Wray, has appeared at the type of high-profile news conference that typically marks a major criminal investigation, instead issuing news releases. Mr. Rosen also called for calm and vowed to fully investigate the violence, but the comments came in a video posted by the Justice Department on YouTube around midnight. Chad F. Wolf, the departing acting secretary of homeland security, was in the Middle East during the siege and did not return until later in the week.

No federal officials have held public briefings about the January 6 attack on the US Capitol. After Insider inquired about the lack of public briefings, the Justice Department announced it would host one at 3 p.m. Tuesday. Nearly a week after a mob stormed the US Capitol building, not a single federal official has hosted a public briefing to inform Americans about what happened, and what the federal government is doing to bring insurrectionists to justice. Neither Rosen nor Wray has given a public briefing, and neither are expected to participate in a briefing to members of Congress about the chaos, according to The Wall Street Journal. Facebook said Monday that it will begin removing any content that includes the phrase "stop the steal" from its platforms, expanding its efforts to limit the spread of election misinformation. The company two months ago removed the original group of the same name, which fueled voter fraud misinformation after the election. But our planning took on new urgency after last week's violence in Washington, D.C., and we are treating the next two weeks as a major civic event," they wrote. "We are now removing content containing the phrase 'stop the steal' under our Coordinating Harm policy from Facebook and Instagram," they said. Facebook also announced that it will continue its pause on all ads in the U.S. about politics or elections, a policy that has been in effect since November.

Scared Straight or Scarred for Life?

Avery leaves Swift River feeling optimistic, but that feeling doesn’t last. Here, too, both brothers are supposed to be scared straight, though Rosen shows how Ivy Ridge “focused more heavily on instilling the idea that the clients themselves were the problem.” By now, we know what will happen. Most parents are not interested in talking with a reporter about sending off their kids to such programs — and the programs aren’t either. (Swift River and Adirondack Leadership Expeditions were part of an entity controlled by Bain Capital, which shut them both down in 2013.) Rosen argues that the trauma of scaring a kid straight ends up scarring them for life, making them feel like outsiders, like they’re broken.

Facebook bans 'stop the steal' content, 69 days after the election

(CNN Business) Facebook will begin removing all content that mentions the phrase "stop the steal," a full 69 days after Election Day. The social media giant said in a blog post that it will ramp up enforcement against the phrase because it was used by those who participated in last week's riots at the US Capitol. On Election Day, the slogan "stop the steal" quickly became a rallying cry among President Donald Trump's supporters, many of whom were egged on by Trump himself and his allies with false claims of election fraud. As a hashtag, its origins date back years, according to Facebook's CrowdTangle analysis tool, but it became wildly popular in recent months as a gathering place for conspiracy theories about the election outcome. Facebook added that it will continue its weeks-long ban on all US political advertising, including by Trump, whose account Facebook suspended indefinitely on Jan. 7.

The U.S. attorney in Washington initially refused to rule out investigating Mr. Trump’s role in the riot. The deadly storming of the Capitol by Mr. Trump’s supporters transformed the politics of Washington in ways that were still hard to measure. The December call to the investigator, like the call Mr. Trump made to Mr. Raffensperger, was recorded, the official said. Mr. Trump had pressured Mr. Pence publicly and privately to overturn the certifications and throw them back to the states so that Mr. Trump could try to undo results in states that Mr. Biden won. Parler is one of several upstarts that have courted President Trump’s supporters with promises of “unbiased” and “free speech” social networks.
