At 20 years old, golf phenom Rose Zhang has a reputation for poise under pressure—for being calm and disciplined in her approach to the game and her expectations about herself. Although known for breaking records and dominating the competition as an amateur, in June when she became the first woman in more than 70 years to win her professional golf debut, she expressed surprise: “I honestly didn’t even expect to make the cut.” After tying for third in the Maybank Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in late October, she said she just feels “really lucky,” adding: “I still have lots to learn.”Under that demeanor is a fierce drive. “Even though I’m considered pretty mellow, pretty chill, I definitely do have a very competitive spirit,” Zhang says over video from Malaysia just before the Maybank tournament. She has admitted that as a rising star on golf’s junior circuit in Southern California, she kept her 25 or so gold medals but threw away up to 20 silver ones, because who cares about second place? “I think that fight in me, that grind, has definitely allowed me to be where I am now,” she says.

CNN —Thai golfer Natthakritta Vongtaveelap made it through just five holes of her US Women’s Open debut on Thursday before she was disqualified due to her caddie’s use of a rangefinder. Zhang triumphs in playoff to win in pro debut on LPGA Tour

NEW YORK, June 4 (Reuters) - American Rose Zhang prevailed in a tense playoff against compatriot Jennifer Kupcho to claim at the Mizuho Americas Open title and become first woman in more than 70 years to win on her professional debut at an LPGA Tour event on Sunday. "It was just last week that I won NCAAs with my team mates and to turn pro and come out here, it's just been amazing." Got a taste of the pressure, got a taste of the wind and I tried to stay composed as always," said Zhang. Zhang, who won the Augusta National Women's Amateur in April, is the second woman to win in her pro debut on the tour after Beverly Hanson in 1951. Not long before Rose Zhang clutched a microphone on Tuesday, Michelle Wie West laughingly made an observation: Zhang might have logged more weeks as the world’s No. 1 amateur women’s golfer than Wie West spent as an amateur, period. It was an exaggeration — even though Wie West became a professional at 15 years old and Zhang spent more than 140 weeks in the top spot — but it also wryly underscored how Zhang’s rise in women’s golf is playing out differently from how other ascending stars built their careers. In Zhang, who will make her professional debut this week at the Mizuho Americas Open in Jersey City, N.J., women’s golf is getting the rare prodigy who has played for an American college. “So I wanted to see how I fared in college golf, and it turned out well.”

Her career has been marked by record-breaking performances, a slew of championship titles, and she could surpass the college record of Tiger Woods. Most recently, she won the highly prestigious 2023 Augusta National Women's Amateur, or ANWA, tournament. "I'll be super, super busy," Zhang said in an interview with the "No Laying Up" podcast days before ANWA. But more stress doesn't often lead to better results, Zhang said, which forced her to make a simple yet significant mindset shift. It might just be a coincidence that Zhang's first-time ANWA victory happened once she adopted a lower-pressure mentality, but it could also be psychology at work.
