This researcher is trying to flip the script about student loan forgiveness

The odds of student loan forgiveness happening have never been greater, experts say. Officials at the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Justice are currently trying to find answers to that question. And if they decide he doesn't, will Democrats, despite their razor-thin majority, manage to pass legislation forgiving student debt? A number of critics of broad student loan forgiveness say the policy would direct taxpayer dollars to people who are already relatively well-off, since college degrees lead to higher earnings. Now a group of scholars at the Roosevelt Institute, a progressive think tank, have published research they hope will change the minds of Biden and other critics when it comes to student loan forgiveness.

Biden, Johnson Chart Path for U.S.-U.K. Ties

PLYMOUTH, England—President Biden and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson outlined a vision for U.S.-U.K. relations centered on promoting democracy and countering the influence of autocratic states during their first in-person meeting. The two leaders on Thursday agreed on a wide-ranging document that charts a path forward from a global pandemic that has killed millions, as the virus continues spreading in some parts of the world. It calls for investments in science and technology, renewed efforts to address climate change and improved defenses against global health threats. The two-page document—dubbed the “Atlantic Charter,” after the joint statement made by then-Prime Minister Winston Churchill and President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1941 when they set out their approach to a post-World War II world—includes few specific policy commitments. “We must ensure that democracies—starting with our own—can deliver on solving the critical challenges of our time,” the new charter states.

As part of the agreement, Biden and Johnson will also work to reopen travel between the U.S. and U.K. as soon as possible. U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan confirmed the updated Atlantic Charter agreement aboard Air Force One while en route to the U.K. Wednesday for Biden's first trip abroad as president. “There'll be a refresher of the Atlantic Charter, which is now 80 years old,” Sullivan told reporters. And while the Atlantic Charter represents the latest chapter in the "special relationship" between Washington and London, the British government said this week that Johnson doesn't like that term. An aide told The Atlantic in a profile about Johnson that the prime minister thought the phrase appeared needy.

PLYMOUTH, England—President Biden and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will meet in person for the first time Thursday, in a test of U.S.-U.K. relations amid the coronavirus pandemic, Brexit and growing tensions over Northern Ireland. The two leaders are expected to announce a wide-ranging “Atlantic Charter” aimed at solidifying trans-Atlantic relations. Before their formal meeting, Messrs. Johnson and Biden will view the 1941 Atlantic Charter, which will be on display in the country of Cornwall. At issue is a post-Brexit agreement aimed at avoiding a hard border between Ireland, which is in the EU, and Northern Ireland, which is in the U.K. Instead, the U.K. and the EU have agreed to be border checks on goods heading from Britain to Northern Ireland, effectively placing a border of sorts within the U.K.

Mr. Biden and Mr. Johnson are expected to announce what is being billed as a renewal of the Atlantic Charter — the declaration of post-war cooperation that Prime Minister Winston Churchill and President Franklin D. Roosevelt laid out in 1941 during World War II. Mr. Biden opposed Britain’s drive leave the European Union, a push that Mr. Johnson helped lead. Mr. Biden and Mr. Johnson will meet on Thursday afternoon at Carbis Bay in Cornwall, before Friday’s meeting of Group of 7 leading industrial nations. Mildenhall, he called his weeklong diplomatic overture “essential,” saying that no nation acting alone could meet the world’s challenges. Mr. Biden also cast his trip in broader terms as an effort to rally the United States and its allies in an existential struggle between democracy and autocracy.

Women would be among the biggest winners of student loan forgivness. Certain critics of student loan forgiveness have argued that the policy would largely benefit the relatively well-off, pointing out that college degrees lead to higher earnings. Average forgiveness would be over $11,000 among white and Latinx households in that lowest range of net worth. "These analyses indicate that student loan cancellation policies are an overall societal good," the researchers at the Roosevelt Institute write. Here's who else would benefit big from student loan forgiveness.

PLYMOUTH, England—President Biden and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will seek to ease Covid-19 travel restrictions as part of a wide-ranging “Atlantic Charter” before this week’s Group of Seven meeting, according to Mr. Johnson’s office. Following the Thursday meeting, Messrs. Biden and Johnson are expected to announce the formation of a task force with the goal of reopening travel between the U.S. and the UK as soon as possible. As more people get vaccinated, countries around the world are lifting restrictions, allowing for business and leisure travel. In March 2020, then-President Donald Trump barred most travel into the U.S. from the UK by noncitizens. In recent months, major airlines have urged the Biden administration to lift the restrictions.

The Roosevelt Institute found cancelling $50,000 in student debt would be progressive, not regressive. It would also help close the racial wealth gap, given that more Black borrowers graduate with debt. Some Democrats' calls to cancel $50,000 in student debt per borrower has critics, with even President Joe Biden arguing it would benefit the high-earners more than the low earners. He used the same argument that people who go to Ivy league schools do not need student debt forgiveness at a CNN town hall in February, where he said student debt is not a "Harvard, Yale, and Penn" problem. Warren told Insider on Tuesday that Biden can cancel $50,000 in student debt "with the stroke of a pen."

During the 2020 presidential election, several candidates pledged their support for some form of student debt forgiveness — including President Joe Biden. The back-and-forth is part of a broader debate about who would benefit the most from student debt forgiveness. Some have argued that because college graduates tend to earn more, partially or completely forgiving student debt would be "regressive." But a recent brief by the Roosevelt Institute that analyzes how $50,000 of student debt forgiveness would impact household wealth, argues that the idea of student debt regressivity is a "myth," and that the average person within the 20th to 40th percentile bracket for household assets would receive four times more than the average households in the top 10%. Wealth, Hamilton argues, captures a more complete picture of borrowers' financial status and better accounts for the racial disparities.

Many students like me were told that the lynching of Black Americans was tragic but not that these public murders were commonplace and often lauded by local papers and law enforcement. Bret Harte Junior High and Skyline High School had Asian, Latino and Black students, but those schools were mostly white. This did not seem to be the case in the other public high schools in town. The truth about Tulsa, and the repeated violence by some white Americans against Black Americans, was systematically ignored, perhaps because it was regarded as too honest, too painful a lesson for our young white ears. So, our predominantly white schools didn’t teach it, our mass appeal works of historical fiction didn’t enlighten us, and my chosen industry didn’t take on the subject in films and shows until recently.
