There's rising hope that monetary policymakers have successfully cooled inflation without tipping the economy into a recession. Yet closely watched survey data from the University of Michigan shows consumer sentiment, while improving, is a far cry from pre-pandemic levels. Inflation vs. the job marketContinued strength in the labor market is something economists expected to sweeten everyday Americans' views of the economy. While the Michigan index compiles questions focused on financial conditions and purchasing power, the Conference Board's more closely gauges one's feelings about the job market. A hot job market can be a double-edged sword for sentiment, Michigan's Hsu noted.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The playoff beard had been shaved off well before fresh-faced Ryan Blaney arrived in Nashville to celebrate his first NASCAR championship. That's a bit fitting, though, as Blaney this year also contributed to two new marks on Penske's impressive motorsports resume. Then you've got to gel with a team.”The breakthrough came in 2017 at Pocono when Blaney beat Kevin Harvick for his first Cup win for Penske. “He won the race at Pocono, it's ironic, racing Harvick and Harvick is retiring now and Blaney is now champion,” Penske said. He spoke with JR Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing, but already had an in of sorts at Penske, where Brad Keselowski that year won Team Penske its first Cup championship.

The talks were brokered by the billionaire founder of major Apple supplier Foxconn (2317.TW), Terry Gou, who is running as an independent candidate. In one of the most dramatic moments, the KMT's presidential candidate, Hou Yu-ih, read a private text message from TPP candidate Ko Wen-je in which Ko said Gou needed to "find a reason" to drop out of the presidential race. Hou and Ko will on Friday morning go to the election commission to register their separate presidential runs, ahead of a 0930GMT registration deadline. Gou, who has trailed far behind in the polls, has not said whether he will also register. By contrast, a united DPP has been charging ahead in its election campaign, registering its presidential and vice presidential candidates on Tuesday.

Now for the first time this century, sales volumes at the big consumer goods manufacturers are falling. In the first nine months of the year, Kraft Heinz said the quantity of its sold items declined by nearly 6 percentage points year-on-year. That’s likely to allow Nestlé, Kraft Heinz and Unilever to see flat or modest increases in 2023 sales, LSEG data shows. Earlier this year, outgoing Kraft Heinz Chief Executive Miguel Patricio said the company lost market share to a branded competitor that spent more. Unilever, Nestlé and Kraft Heinz have all pointed to a slowing of price growth in the coming year.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. Last week, as Israel continued its military response to the October 7 Hamas terror attack, its political goals — and potential endgame — remained a source of huge controversy. Join us on Twitter and Facebook“Take, for example, the Israel Defense Forces strike on Gaza’s Jabalya refugee camp on Tuesday. “Following the horrific massacre in Israel by Hamas terrorists on October 7, I felt an intense, relentless grief. Though Perry wanted to escape Chandler, he kept him around, because heaven forbid anyone saw what he was hiding.”

CNN —A federal judge struck down California’s ban on firearm magazines holding more than 10 rounds Friday as unconstitutional, “arbitrary and capricious.”The ban, which was adopted through a 2016 proposition, had gone through various appeals until the US Supreme Court sent the case back to lower courts following its 2022 ruling in New York State Rifle and Pistol Association vs. Bruen. Gavin Newsom in a statement called the decision “politics, pure and simple,” noting Benitez’s record for rolling back gun control legislation. California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a notice of appeal, vowing to “fight for our authority to keep Californians safe from weapon enhancements designed to cause mass casualties.”The injunction on the ban will be stayed for 10 days, according to the decision. The president and general counsel for the California Rifle & Pistol Association, Chuck Michel, whose group originally filed the case along with several private gun owners, praised the ruling, saying “the clock is ticking” on “absurdly restrictive laws” that violate the Constitution. Billy Clark, litigation attorney at Giffords Law Center, told CNN he was confident the decision will be overturned and called large capacity magazine regulations “commonsense and constitutional.”

China, which views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, has in recent years carried out many such drills around the island, seeking to assert its sovereignty claims and pressure Taipei. Warships from China's southern and eastern theatre commands have been operating together off Taiwan's east coast, he added. China has not commented about the drills around Taiwan, and its defence ministry has not responded to requests for comment. Ministry spokesman Sun Li-fang added that China's Eastern Theatre Command forces were the "attacking force", simulating a battle scenario. WASHINGTON (AP) — A contractor for the U.S. government has been arrested on espionage charges, accused of providing a foreign country classified information that he downloaded and printed from his work computer system, the Justice Department said Thursday. Abraham Teklu Lemma, who is originally from Ethiopia, had a top secret security clearance and access to classified information through contracting positions with the departments of State and Justice. Court papers do not identify the country Lemma is accused of spying for, and a Justice Department spokesman declined to comment. Lemma, 50, of Silver Spring, Maryland, is a naturalized U.S. citizen, the Justice Department said. The department said it would continue to implement recommendations from that review to improve its protection of classified information.

At the top of the latest IPO price range, the enterprise value would be 16x EBITDA. The right valuation for Instacart depends on where the ultimate rate of sales growth falls, Einhorn said. Including the cash on the company's balance sheet, that values Instacart at about three times EBITDA – way below DoorDash's valuation. Even that would value the company at only seven times 2025 EBITDA, and about 14 times EBITDA from the last four quarters, still a sharp discount to DoorDash. So in a twist few would have predicted in 2020 or 2021, Instacart is trying to go public as a value stock, carefully managed to wring the best results from potentially modest growth.

Tichborne’s grief-stricken mother immediately embraced this man as her son, despite major inconsistencies in his story. Tichborne had spoken fluent French; this man, whom investigators hired by others in the Tichborne family discovered to be an Australian butcher named Arthur Orton, didn’t know a word. Tichborne had been of average size; this man was enormously overweight. Even so, as the dispute was sensationalized by the press, public opinion became hotly divided along class lines, with many of London’s poor taking up Orton’s cause. The passionately debated trials that followed—first in civil court and then in criminal court, where Orton, by now a celebrity, was sentenced to prison for perjury—were among the lengthiest in the history of English law.

CNN —Former President Barack Obama is staying cool this summer with a summer playlist of 40-plus songs that showcase his eclectic tastes. There are also some repeat artists on the list that Obama was listening to in the summer of 2021 – including the Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, SZA, Michael Kiwanuka and Bob Dylan – who show up here with different songs. Obama’s 2023 summer list includes country singer Luke Combs’s cover of Tracy Chapman’s 1988 classic “Fast Car,” which recently reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart, making Chapman the first Black woman to top that chart in its 33-year existence. REUTERS/Jason Lee/File PhotoTAIPEI, July 14 (Reuters) - China's military has been flexing its muscles this week around Taiwan practicing joint force operations far out at sea, ahead of Taipei holding its annual war games at the end of the month when Taiwan will simulate breaking a Chinese blockade. Chieh Chung, a military researcher at Taiwan's National Policy Foundation think tank, said practicing long-distance missions was important for China as they would be the "main combat mode" in any conflict. "They are expanding military deterrence actions to create a cognitive effect that Taiwan's national defences are useless," the official said. China routinely denounces U.S. military activity in the strait as provocation. "The Eastern Theatre Command are well seasoned, but it's the Southern Theatre Command that needs training for long-distance support," Su said.

TAIPEI, July 6 (Reuters) - Taiwan's TSMC (2330.TW), the world's largest contract chipmaker, said on Thursday it does not expect any direct impact on its production from China's decision to restrict exports of two metals widely used in semiconductors and electric vehicles. That followed the U.S. decision to impose export restrictions to curb China's access to key technologies used for artificial intelligence. "After evaluation, we do not expect the export restrictions on raw materials gallium and germanium will have any direct impact on TSMC's production," Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co said in an emailed statement. China's restrictions will have a very limited impact on the company's short-term procurement and wafer production and delivery, WIN added. Visual Photonics Epitaxy said it had noticed little effect so far from China's export restrictions.

But some researchers and environmental groups - supported by companies claiming to be able to help solve the problem - say airlines have done too little to handle the issue. According to such experts, research shows that non-CO2 emissions can actually be more harmful than carbon emissions. New European Union rules on emissions trading that will come into force in 2025 will force airlines to track and report their non-C02 emissions. Airlines have pledged to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, mainly by adopting Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), scarce alternative fuels made from renewable sources - like biofuels or synthetic fuels - that are used to power aircraft. Based in Cambridge, England, SATAVIA says that by focusing so heavily on carbon emissions, the industry will be paying more money for a solution that could take years to have an impact.
