A hotter-than-expected consumer price index on Tuesday sent stocks reeling, with the Dow posting its biggest drop in a year. Stocks bounced back over the next two days, helped by a softer retail sales report , only to slump again on Friday's hot producer price index for January. As we said this week, we're not overly concerned with the hotter-than-expected inflationary readings. REUTERS/Joe Skipper/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 16 (Reuters) - Amazon.com (AMZN.O) said on Thursday its two prototype satellites for its planned Kuiper internet network have been operating successfully in orbit, with the project on track to start launching operational satellites by mid-2024. The Kuiper internet network is set to compete against billionaire Elon Musk's Starlink, the world's largest satellite operator, to offer broadband internet service globally to consumers, companies and governments. Amazon said it used the prototype satellites for brief two-way video calls, streaming a high-definition movie on Prime Video and ordering items off Amazon's website. Badyal declined to say how many satellites Amazon would launch per rocket. The Boeing-Lockheed joint venture United Launch Alliance is set to loft the first several batches of Kuiper satellites aboard its Atlas 5 and the company's upcoming Vulcan rocket.

PLD Space/Handout via REUTERS/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsMADRID, Oct 20 (Reuters) - Spanish rocket company PLD Space plans a first orbital launch from French Guiana in the first quarter of 2026, after it carried out the first fully private European rocket launch earlier this month, it said on Friday. PLD will use the data gathered with the 30 million euro ($32 million) suborbital test to develop the larger Miura-5, a full orbital launcher. So far, they have identified 1,000 elements for improvement to develop Miura-5, it said. PLD Space said it expects to sign the first binding agreements with clients next year. Europe's efforts to develop capabilities to send small satellites into space are in focus after a failed orbital rocket launch by Virgin Orbit from Britain in January.

A United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket emblazoned with the Amazon logo lifted off from Cape Canaveral shortly after 2 p.m. Eastern time (1800 GMT), carrying the two Kuiper test satellites, a long-awaited mission Amazon initially had intended to launch using different rockets. In the days leading up to the launch, Amazon divulged few specifics about the two satellites, which were built at its satellite plant in Redmond, Washington. Amazon has vowed to invest $10 billion into its Kuiper project, which was announced in 2019, the year SpaceX began deploying its first operational Starlink spacecraft. The market for broadband internet service from low-Earth orbiting satellites is viewed as being worth up to tens of billions of dollars in the next decade. Like SpaceX, Amazon aims to target individual consumers and enterprise customers with Kuiper, pulling from its devices playbook to build consumer terminals at a company cost of $400 each - though it has not yet announced prices.

REUTERS/Ivan Pierre Aguirre/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Sept 27 (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said on Wednesday it has closed a probe into Blue Origin's 2022 New Shepard rocket failure, forcing a redesign of the vehicle's engine and other fixes before the company can resume its suborbital launch business. Blue Origin must take 21 corrective actions before its reusable New Shepard rocket can return to flight, including a "redesign of engine and nozzle components to improve structural performance during operation as well as organizational changes," the FAA said. The FAA, which regulates launch site safety and oversees mishap investigations led by rocket companies, cited the same conclusion as Blue Origin's in its statement on Wednesday. Sept 19 (Reuters) - Shares of Rocket Lab USA (RKLB.O) slumped around 26% in premarket trading on Tuesday after the space company's latest mission ended about 2-1/2 minutes following launch due to an undisclosed issue. Mission failures weigh heavily on smaller rocket companies that carry payloads for space exploration startups. Virgin Orbit, founded by billionaire Richard Branson, filed for bankruptcy in April after its rocket failed to reach orbit in January. Its Electron rocket was carrying satellites for American space tech company Capella Space, which provides radar and Earth observation technology. Rocket Lab said last week it signed a deal for four launches with defense contractor Leidos (LDOS.N), scheduled across 2024 and 2025.

The U.S. military is raising the stakes — and widening the field — on a high-profile competition for Space Force mission contracts. The Space Force plans to buy even more rocket launches from companies in the coming years than previously expected, granting more companies a chance at securing billions in potential contracts. Earlier this year the Space Force kicked off the process to buy five years' worth of launches, under a lucrative program known as National Security Space Launch (NSSL) Phase 3. Pentecost said Space Force hosted an industry day in February to go over the program's details and had 22 companies show up. That's split into "Launch Service," meaning how much it costs to build and launch a rocket, and the "Launch Service Support," which covers special requirements the military may have for launch.

NASA sees moon lunar mining trial within the next decade

A key part of the mission is advancing commercial opportunities in space. Developing access to resources on the moon will be key to cutting costs and developing a circular economy, Sanders said. NASA will at the end of the month send a test drill rig to the moon and plans a larger-scale excavation of moon soil, or regolith, and a pilot processing plant in 2032. The rover will demonstrate the collection of lunar soil that contains oxygen in the form of oxides. Using separate equipment sent to the moon with the rover, NASA will aim to extract that oxygen, he said.

MADRID, June 14 (Reuters) - Spanish startup PLD Space has signed a memorandum of understanding with France's Arianespace to develop joint services to launch small satellites into orbit, the Spanish company said on Wednesday. The agreement will allow PLD Space to offer its customisable services to Arianespace customers, it said in a statement. It plans to gradually increase its capacity to 10 to 12 launches per year by the end of this decade. Europe's efforts to develop capabilities to send small satellites into space are in focus after a failed orbital rocket launch by Virgin Orbit from Britain in January. Arianespace, which launches satellites from French Guiana, is majority owned by ArianeGroup, a joint venture between Airbus (AIR.PA) and Safran (SAF.PA).

The biggest week of this earnings season showed us that things aren't as bad as many feared. The week ahead of earnings, including several more Club names, should tell us more. The results are always important, but it's the guidance and management commentary we will really hone in on to better understand the path ahead. In Amazon's case, a solid first quarter for its AWS cloud business was overshadowed by management seeing a material slowdown in April. ET: Nonfarm Payrolls Looking back It was the biggest week of this earnings season for the Club as several of our mega-cap holdings and industry bellwethers reported results.
The changes will update the current fee structure on the majority of loans originated by mortgage lenders in the US. Prior to these fee changes, that same borrower would been charged a fee equal to 0.75% of the loan amount. On a $300,000 loan, that's the difference between a $375 fee and a $2,250 fee. While fees have generally been reduced for borrowers with lower scores compared to the old fee structure, those with low scores will still pay higher fees than those with high scores. DTI fee changes coming August 1Another fee change is set to go into effect on August 1, after its implementation was postponed following pushback from the mortgage industry.
WASHINGTON, April 24 (Reuters) - The U.S. Space Force said on Monday that Elon Musk's SpaceX was granted approval to lease a second rocket launch complex at a military base in California, setting the space company up for its fifth launch site in the United States. Under the lease, SpaceX will launch its workhorse Falcon rockets from Space Launch Complex-6 at Vandenberg Space Force Base, a military launch site north of Los Angeles where the space company operates another launchpad. A Monday night Space Force statement said a letter of support for the decision was signed on Friday by Space Launch Delta 30 commander Col. The new launch site, vacated last year by the Boeing-Lockheed joint venture United Launch Alliance, gives SpaceX more room to handle an increasingly busy launch schedule for commercial, government and internal satellite launches. SpaceX's grant of Space Launch Complex-6 comes as rocket companies prepare to compete for the Pentagon's Phase 3 National Security Space Launch program, a watershed military launch procurement effort expected to begin in the next year or so.
Virgin Orbit on Tuesday filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the U.S. after failing to secure a funding lifeline. The California-based satellite launch company lodged the filing in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the District of Delaware and is looking to sell its assets. Virgin Orbit said Virgin Investments would provide $31.6 million in new money through debtor-in-possession financing to help fund the process and protect its operations. Virgin Orbit developed a system that uses a modified 747 jet to send satellites into space by dropping a rocket from under the aircraft's wing mid-flight. Virgin Orbit is among a select few U.S. rocket companies to successfully achieve orbit with a privately developed launch vehicle.

The deal, facilitated by a so-called blank check company, gave Virgin Orbit a valuation of nearly $4 billion. That debt gives the flashy British billionaire first priority of Virgin Orbit assets in the event of the now-impending bankruptcy. And Chief Strategy Officer Jim Simpson had also spent more than eight years in Boeing's satellite division before joining Virgin Orbit. That frustration continued after the pause, with employees confused by the lack of specifics about which investors were speaking to Virgin Orbit leadership. Virgin Orbit

Investing in Space: Don't panic

CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. Virgin Orbit's headquarters and factory are near multiple rocket and space companies, with several growing fast nearby in "Space Beach" (an industry nickname for Long Beach, California). The fight for talent remains very competitive, which should give Virgin Orbit folks reassurance in the face of an uncertain future. Granted, the SVB situation is putting other banks under pressure and could spur caution around startup fundraising. And don't forget, multiple space companies, large and small, are backed by a lone wealthy individual with huge equity ownership.
