It’s the silent stories — those too dangerous to tell — that characterize much of queer history. That fear-induced secrecy has left large swaths of our archives absent of queer narratives, especially queer Black narratives. “How could it possibly be that Black queer people did not exist prior to the Harlem Renaissance?” he asked. “Maybe we did not have the word ‘queer’... maybe we didn't have the language, but people don't appear because of the language. The wedding is a reminder that same-sex Black love is something that has existed — and has been celebrated — across centuries.

City of London to remove statues linked to slavery trade

LONDON (Reuters) - The City of London on Thursday approved the removal from its ceremonial Guildhall home of statues of two figures that symbolise the financial sector’s historic role in slavery. “The view of members was that removing and re-siting statues linked to slavery is an important milestone in our journey towards a more inclusive and diverse City,” the City’s political leader Catherine McGuinness said. Beckford was two times Lord Mayor of London in the 18th century and had plantations in Jamaica with slaves. In London’s predominantly white financial sector, the Black Lives Matter protests increased pressure to better reflect the wider population’s ethnic diversity. Britain’s financial services and City minister John Glen told a conference on Thursday that the Race at Work Charter launched in 2018 had attracted 50 firms to sign up to commit to tackling barriers.

The mayor of Washington extended a public emergency on Wednesday night as the local police worked to secure the area around the Capitol. “Everyone needs to clear the Capitol ground and remove themselves back to their homes states, or wherever they’re staying, and let the police do their jobs,” Mayor Muriel Bowser told reporters late Wednesday evening. Ms. Bowser also issued an order extending the District of Columbia’s public emergency for 15 days. A newly-elected Republican congresswoman released an ad saying she intends to carry a handgun with her around Washington, DC, and wound up on the radar of the Metropolitan Police Department. "I will carry my firearm in DC and in Congress," Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert said in the ad. It's unclear whether Boebert has actually carried her firearm around Washington, DC, or to the Capitol. Muriel Bowser, the mayor of Washington, DC, said at the Monday news conference that she hasn't yet seen Boebert's video, but called the issue at hand "serious business." Last month, violence broke out in Washington, DC, during protests against President Donald Trump's election loss.

Paris and London agreed late Tuesday that drivers testing negative for Covid-19 could board ferries to France. The decision came after much of the world shut its borders to Britain to contain the new mutation. The Road Haulage Association estimated there were up to 10,000 trucks backed-up near the port. The new Covid variant is apparently so infectious it prompted Prime Minister Boris Johnson to effectively cancel Christmas for millions. DOVER, England (Reuters) -Angry truck drivers briefly scuffled with police in the streets of Dover on Wednesday as a partial blockade by France designed to stop the spread of a new highly infectious coronavirus variant left thousands stranded before Christmas. Slideshow ( 5 images )Paris and London agreed late on Tuesday that drivers carrying a negative COVID-19 test result could board ferries for Calais after much of the world shut its borders to Britain to contain the new mutated variant. “I hope that this morning, you’ll see people and HGVs crossing the Channel at the short straits,” British Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick told Sky News. The mostly European drivers, many stranded with their trucks and without access to hot food or bathroom facilities, have grown increasingly angry as it became clear they may not get home in time for Christmas with their families. “They don’t give us food, they don’t give us drinks, they don’t give us sanitation, they don’t offer us anything,” he said in Spanish.

Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick said the rules were unlikely to change before Christmas but he said the government’s committee would meet on Wednesday to decide what further action needed to be taken. “We don’t have an immediate plan to take action but the number of cases is rising and the variant is spreading to other parts of the country so we will see if it’s necessary to do more,” he told BBC TV.

Slideshow ( 2 images )LONDON (Reuters) - Thousands of angry truck drivers should be able to start leaving Britain for France on Wednesday after Paris lifted a partial blockade designed to stop the spread of a new highly infectious coronavirus variant. That left thousands of European truck drivers stranded in south east England just days before Christmas. Paris lifted the blockade to allow drivers with a recent negative COVID test to enter the country. “I hope that this morning, you’ll see people and HGVs crossing the Channel at the short straits,” he told Sky News television. No Brexit trade deal yet as serious issues remain, British minister says

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain and the European Union have still not clinched a Brexit trade deal as serious issues remain unresolved that prevent Prime Minister Boris Johnson signing up to an accord, a British minister said on Wednesday. FILE PHOTO: Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government Robert Jenrick arrives on Downing Street, following the outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), London, Britain, June 9, 2020. The EU is making a “final push” to strike a trade deal with Britain, although there are still deep rifts over fishing rights, EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier said on Tuesday before meeting EU ambassadors in Brussels. Walking away might elicit applause from many Brexiteers but would trigger severe trade disruption. An accord would ensure that the goods trade which makes up half of annual EU-UK commerce, worth nearly a trillion dollars in all, would remain free of tariffs and quotas.

British Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick told Sky News that “at the moment there isn’t sufficient progress” at the talks. “On balance, I think given the progress that has been made that there should be a deal,” Martin told national broadcaster RTE. The EU is making a “final push” to strike a trade deal though rifts over fishing rights remain, EU negotiator Michel Barnier said on Tuesday. EU leaders fear that after Brexit the United Kingdom could ease regulation to undercut others and gouge EU market share. Barnier told EU envoys on Tuesday that Britain’s latest offer on sharing out the fish catch from British waters from 2021 was “totally unacceptable”, according to EU diplomats.

BRUSSELS/LONDON (Reuters) -European Union member states have started to prepare their procedure to put in place a new trade deal with the United Kingdom from Jan. 1, three diplomatic sources in the bloc told Reuters, indicating a deal could be imminent. The diplomat said the Council, which represents the member states in Brussels, had started preparations to enable a “provisional application”, or fast-track implementation, of the agreement. [GBP/]While EU sources have repeatedly signalled a deal may be near, British sources said on Wednesday that talks remained “difficult” and underscored the differences. Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin said the gap on how much fish EU boats could catch in British waters was still wide. “On balance, I think given the progress that has been made that there should be a deal,” Martin told the national broadcaster RTE.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) -A senior European diplomat told Reuters on Wednesday that a Brexit trade deal could be imminent, raising hopes that Britain and the European Union could avoid a turbulent economic rupture in just eight days. EU member states have started to prepare their procedure to implement any deal from Jan. 1, three diplomatic sources in the bloc told Reuters. One EU diplomat said the European Council, which represents the member states in Brussels, had started preparations to enable a “provisional application”, or fast-track implementation. Walking away might elicit applause from many Brexit supporters at home but would trigger severe trade disruption and end the EU divorce in acrimony. EU leaders have long feared that after Brexit, the United Kingdom could ease regulation to undercut competitors and thus gouge EU market share.

Sterling jumped more than 1.1% against the dollar on perceived prospects of a deal while bond yields rose, and prices fell, in Britain, Europe and the United States. “But at the moment there isn’t sufficient progress.”The “level playing field” is trade jargon for ensuring fair competition.
