Brown sophomore Alex Eisler has a lucrative side hustle selling restaurant reservations. He vends them on nascent platform Appointment Trader. AdvertisementEisler told Business Insider the most expensive reservation he's ever sold was $1,358 at an omakase restaurant in Boston. Appointment Trader is just one platform helping to turn reservation-selling into a cottage industry of sorts. "It's bad for business," Eric Ripert, chef and co-owner of famed French seafood restaurant Le Bernardin, told The New Yorker.

NEW YORK (AP) — David Bouley, the award-winning and frenetic chef whose idiosyncratic haute cuisine and crusty breads pleased critics and the public during a career chasing sleek deliciousness, has died. Bouley died of a heart attack Monday at his home in Kent, Connecticut, according to Lisa Queen, his literary agent. Other restaurants he worked in include Danube, Bouley Bakery, Upstairs at Bouley, Bouley at Home, Secession and Brushstroke, a collaborative effort with the Tsuji Culinary Institute in Osaka, Japan. Danube and Bouley Bakery each earned two Michelin stars. The restaurant Bouley — which famously had a foyer filled with apples — closed in 2017 after 30 years and several location changes, earning a three-star from the New York Times the year previously.

A trio of longtime executives have taken charge at CNN following the exit of Chris Licht. There's a moment in Tim Alberta's brutal profile of CNN's now-former CEO Chris Licht where Licht awkwardly takes a jab at his predecessor Jeff Zucker. The following Monday, as Licht attempted to quell growing calls for his ouster, Licht told CNN staff: "As I read that article, I found myself thinking, CNN is not about me. Le Bernardin at 50: Still Going Strong

Fifty years ago this October, on Paris’s Left Bank, two siblings in their 20s opened Le Bernardin, a small seafood restaurant named after an order of monks who were also firm believers in the pleasures of the table. It would go on to expand to New York City and establish itself as one of the world’s most acclaimed dining destinations. “I guess it lasted,” says Maguy Le Coze, who co-founded Le Bernardin with her brother, Gilbert Le Coze, in 1972. Upstairs, a small legion of chefs, sous chefs, line cooks, sauciers, managers, captains, dedicated fish butchers and sommeliers, including the famed Aldo Sohm, is preparing for service. If the day proceeds as most usually do here, they will welcome up to 100 diners for lunch and another 160 for dinner.
Boosted by a Covid-era tax break-window that closes at the end of the year — and under pressure to cement ties and reassure clients — companies are now spending big on wining and dining current and potential customers. The company, which has operations globally, needed something that would make clients “want to get on a plane from Singapore, from Japan” to attend. “It’s just like when kids go back to school and don’t want to, but then they get excited,” he said. And in the restaurant, guests typically opt for the $298 chef’s tasting menu — $468 with wine pairings. The deduction, which was meant to help support restaurants during the pandemic, only applies to restaurant meals, and only if a member of the client company is present.
"My dad says I'm taking the joy out of a restaurant," Frischling said. "If this industry doesn't keep up, we're not going to have so many restaurants," Frischling told Insider. Frischling is part of a wave of restaurant operators and high-profile chains investing millions in the industry's future. Over the years, Chipotle, Inspire Brands, and Restaurant Brands International — the owner of Burger King and Popeyes — have invested in autonomous-delivery vehicles, ghost kitchens, and digital-ordering software. IGC HospitalityThe New York restaurant company, also known as In Good Company Hospitality Group, invested in the restaurant-tech firm MarginEdge in 2021, according to PitchBook.
