CNN —Scottie Scheffler is a man well-accustomed to making global headlines, but almost never for events beyond the confines of the golf course. In 2014, at 17, as an amateur he made a hole-in-one and the cut on his first PGA Tour start. Without a PGA Tour victory heading into 2022, by April of that year he was a four-time victor, the world No. 1’s image as the self-effacing star of the PGA Tour, a perception he is content to endorse. His 10th PGA Tour title, it made him the first golfer since Woods in 2006 to win a PGA Tour event the week after triumphing at a major.

The expansion of government-subsidized housing loans meant that cheap space was also easy to come by, as New York had a then-ample stock of residential and industrial buildings. But the city has always romanticized artist-dominated buildings, the kinds of communal spaces in which every unit might be home to an artist’s studio (and sometimes, unofficially, their residences, too). In an almost unheard-of feat of perseverance, the same artist, Don Dudley, 93, has been working out of this loft since 1971. So artists have had to create a kind of whisper network to withstand New York’s unimpeachable forward march, which the art market has, ironically, enabled. Most of them are temporary fixes before an artist — who’s grown out, or been priced out, of their space — has to move on.

The golden years for NYC Airbnb hosts are over

Airbnb listings in September fell to 4,600, a staggering 77% drop since June. AdvertisementAdvertisementOnly 4,600 short-term listings in New York City remain on Airbnb this month compared with over 20,000 active listings in June, according to analytics site AirDNA. It also found that Airbnb listings for stays longer than 30 days, which would be okay under the city's new rules, jumped from 54% of all listings in August to 88% in September. Florence banned new short-term rentals in the historic city center, while Paris capped how many days hosts could rent. Are you a New York City host affected by the newly enforced regulations?

The new rules threaten to shutter thousands of short-term rentals and fundamentally redraw what kinds of apartments and homes are used for short-term rentals in New York City. Data site Inside Airbnb estimates there are 40,000 Airbnb listings alone, while an economic study prepared for Airbnb by Boston University Professor Michael Salinger estimates that number is closer to 36,000. One reason for New York City's crackdown is a concern over how short-term rentals squeeze an already incredibly tight housing market. "But a lot of short-term-rental hosts are getting caught up in this lazy sweep." Currently, the average daily rate for New York City listings on Airbnb and Vrbo is $251, according to AirDNA.

Gahanna, Ohio, is the most in-demand area in the country, according to an analysis of over 29,000 ZIP codes by Realtor.com . The most desirable ZIP code for U.S. homebuyers isn't in a big city on the coast — it's a cozy suburb in Ohio. The median price of a home is $389,000, less than the U.S. median of $445,000, per Realtor.com data. As for the other top ZIP codes, buyer demand is concentrated in the affordable Midwest or Northeast neighborhoods near large cities. Many potential buyers for the top 15 ZIP codes are from large cities nearby, which suggests they're looking for cheaper homes locally, the study says.

Private equity firms have bought up hundreds of smaller apartment buildings in trendy New York neighborhoods. Private equity firms own a very small, but growing, fraction of American real estate. Some argue that private equity, hedge funds, and other institutional investors are a convenient target and are being unfairly blamed for the nation's worsening housing affordability crisis. The recent increase in private equity purchases, particularly of single-family homes, has drawn scrutiny, including from Congress, over the last few years. Democrats also couldn't reach agreement on measures that would have boosted tenant protections, including rent stabilization and eviction protections.

In New York City, debates over affordability often center on the proliferation of opulent high-rise developments. But in the boroughs, deep-pocketed investors are buying up hundreds of smaller buildings, prompting a new set of concerns in the city’s deepening housing crisis. Over the past few years, private equity firms have quietly spent hundreds of millions of dollars buying apartments in neighborhoods like Bushwick, Bedford-Stuyvesant and Williamsburg in Brooklyn and Ridgewood in Queens, property records show. Private equity firms — which typically invest money on behalf of pension funds, endowments or other large sources of wealth — focus on assets, like businesses or housing, that they can buy relatively cheaply but that have big profit potential. Their expansion into the housing market across the nation has prompted scrutiny in Congress about whether the trend is amplifying America’s affordability problems.

In a proposed class action filed on Monday in Brooklyn federal court, Siragusa accused Taco Bell of deceiving consumers by falsely advertising its Mexican Pizza, Veggie Mexican Pizza, Crunchwrap Supreme, Grande Crunchwrap and Vegan Crunchwrap as containing "at least double" their actual content. He is not alleging that the items contain less content than Taco Bell describes on its website. Taco Bell, a unit of Yum Brands (YUM.N), did not immediately respond to requests for comment. "Taco Bell does not adequately disclose the weight of the beef or filling," Russo said in an email. The case is Siragusa v Taco Bell Corp, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of New York, No.

Opinion | Two Ways of Looking at the Stock Market’s Rise
  + stars: | 2023-05-31 | by ( Peter Coy | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Gains in the U.S. stock market this year have been concentrated among a handful of immensely valuable tech companies. Technology and communications services stocks in the Standard & Poor’s 500 are up more than 30 percent this year to date. Consumer discretionary stocks are up this year as well — by around 18 percent — but all of the other eight S&P 500 sectors are down. What is the hyper-narrow stock market advance telling us about prospects for the economy, and should we pay attention? The pessimistic take is that it’s unhealthy for a market — and an economy — when all the good news is concentrated in a handful of sectors.

In Kylie Manning’s paintings, figures swirl and emerge from broad landscapes. The wall-filling pieces can provoke a physical reaction, akin to looking over the rail of a bridge across a river. But the rest feels less clear: Is there a third figure, head in hands, between the initial two? Manning’s figures aren’t gendered, and she wants viewers to interpret the subjects and settings on their own terms. “It’s about spending time with them, letting them unravel for you like a song,” she says.
Bartenders Are Giving Blue Cocktails the Green Light

At Rolo’s, a restaurant in Ridgewood, Queens, the bar director Tony Milici recently flirted with the idea of putting a blue drink on the cocktail menu. The result was Sacrebleu, a blue riff on the gin fizz, made with rum, velvet falernum and blue curaçao. “I slept just fine knowing I made the Ramos gin fizz blue,” he said. Craft cocktail bartenders have seemingly gotten over any high-minded reservations about blue drinks, as they’ve begun slowly appearing across menus in the past few years. They have even produced a few quasi-famous new drinks, such as the Gun Metal Blue, at Porchlight in Manhattan, made with the citrus-based liqueur blue curaçao, like most blue drinks.

“We were thinking, what can we find within our budget?” said Mr. del Castillo, 40. Mr. Loy, 42, was eager to move out of his cramped one-bedroom rental on the East Side of Manhattan. “Suddenly I was like, ‘Well, this is tenable,’” said Mr. del Castillo, a retail logistics manager. If, say, Mr. Loy brought a partner into his home, he would continue to pay his full portion of the mortgage. If Ms. Russo and Mr. del Castillo had a baby, Mr. Loy said he would be eager to babysit.

Why most men don’t have enough close friends

And those who do maintain friendships with other men say they tend to have lower levels of emotional intimacy than women report. Research has shown close friendships protect our mental and physical health, she added. Assumptions 27 years later might be different, but social pressures remain that make it difficult for men to express the vulnerability and intimacy needed for close friendships, Sileo said. Men who were more emotionally restricted, focused on power and who scored high on surveys measuring homophobia are less likely to have intimate and close friendships, he said. “If you can have a handful of friends that are quality, that’s better than having a slew of friends.”
On average, dealers are asking 10% above MSRP for new vehicles, according to a recent study by the car-shopping website iSeeCars. REUTERS/Amr AlfikySept 21 (Reuters) - The cost of renting a home in the United States is surging and young workers have felt the sharpest pain, many of them taking on additional jobs or roommates to afford housing costs. Household rents in 2021 jumped 10% from pre-pandemic levels, according to Census Bureau estimates released last week. The 23-year-old spent a year in an apartment in New York City's Queens borough with a door that wouldn’t lock. Recent college graduate Caleb Seamon, 22, started delivering for Uber Eats alongside his full-time job at a think-tank to afford housing. Even so, Seamon says he only found a New York apartment because one of his roommate's parents acted as guarantors.
Bed Bath & Beyond is closing around 150 stores and laying off staff. It has now named 56 of the stores set to close across 21 states. By laying off staff and closing the stores, the company said it planned to reduce costs by $250 million in 2022. Sales in the second quarter had slumped roughly 26% compared to the same period in 2021, Bed Bath & Beyond said in preliminary earning results. The struggling retailer has now revealed the location of 56 of the stores being closed, spanning 21 states and Puerto Rico.
