In January, DeSantis made new appointments to the New College of Florida's board of trustees. His target: New College of Florida, a liberal arts school with less than 700 students, outside of Sarasota, Florida. In January, DeSantis appointed six conservative education leaders to the school's board of 13 total trustees. New College of Florida is the first public school in Florida to accept the CLT as an alternative to other standardized tests. Vertol is based in the Florida Panhandle city of Destin, in Gaetz’s congressional district, and near Keefe’s home city as well. After DeSantis was elected, Vertol in 2019 contributed another $10,000 to the Republican Party of Florida, which is ultimately controlled by the governor.
