Trade body Make UK expects output to fall 0.5% in 2023, down from its June forecast for a 0.3% drop, and grow just 0.5% in 2024. "Manufacturers are seeing a very sharp slowdown in activity as the potent cocktail of rising interest rates, cost of living and slowing overseas markets bites hard," Verity Davidge, policy director at Make UK said. "But it is the scale of the fall in the indicators this quarter that comes as a surprise and highlights the extent of the slowdown on UK manufacturing." Make UK's quarterly survey said the balance for manufacturing output was the weakest performance for production since the last quarter in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

LONDON, June 19 (Reuters) - Britain's main manufacturing trade body Make UK revised up its outlook for this year on Monday thanks to strong demand for aircraft and electronics, but said it still expects production to fall over the year as a whole. Make UK said it expected factory output to fall 0.3% this year compared with a 3.3% contraction expected three months earlier, and kept unchanged its forecast for 0.8% growth in 2024. "Manufacturers are seeing a gradually improving picture, but the word 'gradually' is doing a lot of heavy lifting," said James Brougham, senior economist at Make UK. Aerospace had been boosted by a resumption of travel and aircraft orders after the COVID-19 pandemic, while demand for electronics partly reflected businesses' desire to counter labour shortages. Supply-chain pressures remain an issue for medium-sized firms, said Richard Austin, head of manufacturing at accountants BDO, who sponsored the survey of Make UK members.

A Hebrew Bible that's more than 1,000 years old could sell for up to $50 million at auction this spring, which would make it the most valuable historical document ever auctioned. The sales estimate for the Bible is between $30 million to $50 million. In 2021, hedge fund billionaire Ken Griffin paid $43.2 million for a first edition copy of the U.S. Constitution at a Sotheby's auction. In 1994 Bill Gates paid $30.8 million for the Codex Leicester, a collection of scientific writings that contains drawings by Leonardo da Vinci.
