☆ U.S. Soccer ‘deeply disturbed’ by racist abuse directed at men’s national team’s players after loss to Panama at Copa América

CNN —U.S. Soccer said it was “deeply disturbed” by the racist abuse directed at two of the men’s national team’s players following it’s surprise 2-1 defeat by Panama at the 2024 Copa América in Atlanta on Thursday. Defender Chris Richards and striker Folarin Balogun posted on their Instagram stories the racist messages they had received over the social media platform. Earlier in June, soccer’s global governing body FIFA reinforced its commitment to fighting online abuse, in particular through its Social Media Protection Service (SMPS). The SMPS is a tool which FIFA says protects individuals in soccer from online abuse by hiding hate speech. Panama players celebrate after beating the US at the Copa América.

☆ Transgender swimmer Lia Thomas loses challenge of rules barring her from elite women’s races

Thomas, 25, had in January filed legal paperwork against World Aquatics, swimming’s governing body based in Switzerland, for its policy that restricts transgender athletes from competing in most elite women’s aquatics competitions. It also said national federations don’t have the authority to modify the application of a world governing body’s rules. USA Swimming is the national governing body for swimmers and a member of World Aquatics. In May 2022, Thomas told ABC’s Juju Chang, “It’s been a goal of mine to just swim at an Olympic trials for a very long time and I would love to see that through.”
