Former U.S. Federal Reserve Board Chairman Paul Volcker at a news conference in New York, June 8, 2015. REUTERS/Mike SegarPaul Volcker, the former Federal Reserve chairman who was my longtime friend and officemate, died at the end of 2019 before Covid-19 swept the planet. The ingredients for a Volcker Moment are in plain sight throughout the economy. Sector by sector, prices are rising across many parts of the U.S. economy. The question is whether the Fed is ready and willing to confront what looks very much like a Volcker Moment.

I didn’t even feel it when Dr. Chester pierced my arm.”New York was about to get a second chance. Wall Street boomed and property values soared, drawing foreign investors who parked their fortunes in constantly appreciating New York City real estate. Mayor Bill de Blasio, now in his second and final term, has proposed the biggest budget in New York City history. Of the 100 biggest school districts in America, New York City’s school system already spends the most per capita. Tesla said it would ask a Pennsylvania court to transfer a Solar Roof complaint to California. Tesla's lawyers on Wednesday said they would ask a Pennsylvania court to transfer a class-action complaint over Solar Roof price hikes to California, where similar complaints have been filed. The Pennsylvania complaint — filed in late April by Philip Dahlin and Mary Arndtsen — said Tesla unilaterally increased the price of the couple's Solar Roof project by more than $30,000 after they'd signed a contract. Tesla's lawyers also said the company disputes the "characterization of the facts" as they're laid out in the Pennsylvania complaint. Solar Roof customers could appeal directly to the company, it said.

U.S. prosecutors in plea talks with Oath Keepers on Capitol riot

The number of defendants in the Oath Keepers conspiracy case rose to 16 after four more associates were indicted in recent days. The conspiracy case against the Oath Keepers is the largest and most complex of the hundreds brought by the Justice Department in the months since the attack. In March, U.S. prosecutors said they had new evidence that Oath Keepers members planned violence when Trump’s supporters stormed the Capitol, including text messages tying the group’s leader to the plot. “We’re going to defend the president, the duly elected president,” Stewart Rhodes, the founder of the Oath Keepers said, during a November conference call, according to a court filing unsealed on Sunday. We want him to declare an insurrection, and to call us up as militia.”Mehta has not yet set trial dates for the Oath Keepers defendants.

Growing up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, 67-year-old historian Scott Ellsworth remembers people treating the Tulsa Race Massacre like a shameful secret. “He told me that there was no way that Rowland would have ever attacked Sarah Page,” Ellsworth said. One of the biggest mysteries around the Tulsa Race Massacre revolves around the two teens in the middle of it. In 2001, the Oklahoma Commission to Study the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 released a comprehensive report and in 2015 the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial Commission was created in order to appropriately memorialize the 100th anniversary of the event, which is ongoing this year. ‘Across the Tracks: Remembering the Tulsa Race Massacre and Black Wall Street’ by Alverne Ball (author) and Stacey Robinson (Illustrator)Graphic novel “Across the Tracks” details the neighborhood’s history, destruction and recovery.

Biden has selected China, India ambassador nominees

President Joe Biden is expected to announce he is nominating former senior State Department official Nicholas Burns to serve as his ambassador to China and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti to be his ambassador to India, according to a person familiar with the matter. During the Obama administration, Bauer served as ambassador to Belgium, and Hartley was ambassador to France and Monaco. Burns and Garcetti, if confirmed by the Senate, would come to their postings at high-pressure moments in the U.S. relationships with China and India. The India post would allow the politically ambitious Garcetti to burnish his foreign policy credentials ahead of a possible future White House run. Axios first reported that Biden was ready to nominate Garcetti as ambassador to India and that Burns was the president's likely choice for ambassador to China.

When Duran Duran jumped onto the global music stage in the early 1980s, critics dismissed them as just another teen boy group, albeit with good musical chops, who were most likely the flavor of the moment. Sure, Le Bon continues to croon about time-honored topics like relationships, bad girls and club nightlife. But recent Duran Duran songs also reflect more cerebral concerns, such as the media’s obsession with “Other People’s Lives,” digital voyeurism in “Zoom In” and human over-reliance on technology in “Blame the Machines.”Often, they manage to combine the two arcs. Yeah, they’re often still upbeat and fun-loving, but Duran Duran balances the equation with contemplative moments. But that isn’t fair to Duran Duran or the times they’re living in.

Many Democrats celebrated the news of an Israel-Hamas cease-fire. Other Democrats echoed these concerns, urging the Biden administration to do more to address the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and the economically devastating blockade on Gaza. Biden after the cease-fire announcement pledged to help with the reconstruction process in Gaza, and to provide "rapid humanitarian assistance." Lawmakers like Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez this week also moved to block a $735 million arms sale to Israel approved by the Biden administration. FOCUS-Greece banks on tourists for bad loan relief

The sector brought in revenue of 4 billion euros, less than a quarter of 2019’s 18 billion. ‘PROTECT WHAT I HAVE’While bad loan repayments have proceeded more smoothly than expected in the EU, the European Central Bank’s top supervisor Andrea Enria warned Greek banks this month the crisis was not over and lenders in general may be underestimating risks. What’s more, while Greek banks have made progress in shifting loan risk off their balance sheets through the government’s “Hercules” scheme that runs until late 2022, the debt problem remains. Hercules was launched in 2019 to help Greek banks offload bad loans by turning bundles of debt into asset-backed securities that can be sold to investors. That’s likely to grow with more bad loan securitisations in the pipeline from major banks such as Alpha, National Bank and Piraeus.

The conflict has helped spark one of the most consequential escalations in fighting between Israelis and Palestinians since 2014. "Oh, Joe Biden, think, think, think about humanity, please!" Tech Firm CIOs Are Wading Deeper Into Product Development

CIOs at enterprise tech firms are finding themselves in an area they previously seldom strayed into: building out software products and services for sale to other companies. “The pandemic certainly accelerated this trend.”In the past, Mr. Conyard said, enterprise tech leaders would never have crossed over into product development. Meerah Rajavel, CIO of Citrix Systems Inc., said IT has become embedded in the software maker’s product development process. Among other contributions, Ms. Rajavel said, IT chiefs at enterprise tech firms can be a candid and objective voice for customers, largely because they face many of the same daily issues. As a result, CIOs at tech firms are in a position to create revenue-generating customer services, typically in the form of software upgrades or support.

The Rhodes Scholarship Turns Against Its Legacy of Excellence
  + stars: | 2021-05-07 | by ( David Satter | ) www.wsj.com sentiment -0.97   time to read: +2 min
The Rhodes Scholarship stood for more than 120 years, through cataclysm and world war, as a symbol of individual excellence. Cecil Rhodes (1853-1902), the imperialist and financier who founded the scholarship, wanted Rhodes Scholars to be “the best men for the world’s fight.” The Rhodes Trust rewarded those who survived a withering competition with three years at Oxford University, all expenses paid. Neither Rhodes nor many of those who over the decades benefited from his bequest would recognize the Rhodes Scholarship today. The U.S. Rhodes Scholars in 2021, however, were praised not for worldliness but for their demographics. Twenty-one of the 32 winners are “students of colour” and one is “nonbinary,” according to the Rhodes Trust’s announcement.

Britain's biggest destination countries including mainland Spain and Greece, as well as France, all risk being excluded from the initial "green list" for quarantine-free travel expected on Friday. The green list is likely to comprise smaller destinations such as Gibraltar, Iceland, Israel and Malta, while bigger markets like Portugal and the United States also have a chance. Green list travel will involve people taking two COVID-19 tests, one before arrival back into the UK and one within two days of returning. Airlines and travel companies have complained that the high cost of tests - at around 100 pounds ($140) each -- will dampen demand, but testing prices are falling as competition picks up. TUI on Thursday announced testing packages starting at 20 pounds for its UK customers travelling back from green countries.
