British fintech startup Revolut on Friday said it was valued at $45 billion in a secondary share sale with existing and new investors. The $45 billion transaction sharply increases the company's valuation from the $33 billion notched in July 2021. The valuation comes just weeks after Revolut was granted a banking license with restrictions in the U.K., ending a three-year wait after first applying for the license in 2021. The license allows Revolut to take customer deposits and issue products such as loans and credit cards. The company is now set to build up banking infrastructure in the U.K. before the official launch.

Read previewRevolut has secured a $45 million valuation via a secondary share sale, despite a wider slump in fintech valuations. The London-based neo-bank, which recently secured a banking license in the UK, has signed agreements with institutional investors over a share sale that significantly boosts the company's valuation. That round came at the height of the tech market's COVID-19 boom, and Revolut has not raised primary capital from investors since. This secondary deal allows employees to profit from their stakes in the company and also cements the fintech as Europe's most valuable tech startup ahead of a prospective IPO. Revolut has 45 million customers and offers bank accounts, savings options, and trading in stocks and cryptocurrencies.

LONDON — The boss of British financial technology giant Revolut told CNBC he is optimistic about the company's chances of being granted a U.K. banking license, as a jump in users saw the firm report record full-year pre-tax profits. Several small financial institutions have been able to win approval for a banking license with few customers, he added. "U.K. banking licenses are being approved for smaller companies," Storonsky said. A bank license would enable it to offer loans in the U.K. One conditions set by the Bank of England for granting Revolut its U.K. banking license, was to collapse its six classes of shares into ordinary shares.

Revolut, which ranked as the UK's most valuable start-up when it was valued at around $33 billion in 2021, applied for a UK banking licence early that year but is still awaiting approval. The company said in September it had received permission to delay filing its annual accounts for a second year running.

From Sept. 2, U.S. customers will no longer be able to buy cryptocurrencies on Revolut. From Oct. 3, buying, selling and holding will be disabled altogether for U.S. customers. Citadel Securities' trading strategies? Look no further than a recently filed lawsuit by Citadel Securities against two former employees, per Bloomberg. The suit, which you can read here, alleges the former employees were building a competing high-frequency trading firm while still employed and used trade secrets gained while at Citadel Securities. Portofino told Bloomberg that the Citadel Securities lawsuit was "corporate bullying" and that it would defend itself. On the one hand, trading firms invest a lot of money — check out some salary ranges here — in developing these strategies.
The CEO of at least one digital bank is keeping an eye on Apple's new high-yield savings account. The Big Tech giant launched a savings account with a 4.15% annual percentage yield (APY) through its partnership with Goldman Sachs on April 17. In its first four days of launch, it brought in nearly $1 billion in deposits, according to reporting by Forbes. The savings account is only available to people who have Apple Card — Apple's credit card — but the account has no minimum deposit or balance requirement. Apple's savings account beats this average by tenfold.
A man pauses outside of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on January 15, 2016 in New York City. Index-rebalance strategies, the talk of the town just a few short years ago, are seemingly on their last legs these days. What doomed the index-rebalance strategy is a tale as old as time on Wall Street. Times are tough now, but as Alex notes in his story, not everyone is completely giving up on the strategy. And while we're talking Man Group, here's a rundown on a program meant to help non-tech workers learn data-science skills to help streamline their jobs.
LONDON — Revolut's chief financial officer, Mikko Salovaara, is leaving the digital bank after two years, citing personal reasons. A company spokesperson told CNBC that Salovaara resigned and has not been fired. He said it would be inappropriate to divulge the personal reasons that have led to his departure. The Revolut spokesperson said Salovaara's decision was unrelated to concerns flagged by auditor BDO about the company's financial accounts. In its latest annual report, Revolut posted its first-ever full year of profitability, posting a pretax profit of £59.1 million on revenue of £636.2 million.
Media coverage of BDO's warning on March 1 prompted immediate questions from financial regulators, a March 6 letter to Reuters from Revolut shows. The letter did not address the banking licence application nor its status. "I would be astonished if the regulators go ahead with the banking licence," he added. Revolut applied for a banking licence about two years ago. With a banking licence, Revolut would become a more established player in the U.K. banking market and be able to draw more customers.
Virgin Money (VMUK.L), Britain's sixth largest bank, said in a statement it had also seen "net business deposit inflows in recent days". That means SVB UK's customer deposits are safe and their loans supported, HSBC's top bosses have said. Franklin told Reuters a number of CEOs and startup execs had started researching other banks with which to park cash in addition to SVB UK this week, citing Barclays as a favourite among some. But the collapse of SVB has intensified scrutiny of the business models of all lenders, including specialists with smaller balance sheets to fall back on. "The UK banking system remains safe and continues to operate as normal."
"We have built a strong momentum," the 31-year-old executive said in an interview at Revolut's headquarters in London. Revolut will retain accounting firm BDO for the 2022 audit, it said. Revenues from its crypto business shrank in 2022 as the crypto-downturn hit the firm. In 2020, it made a loss of 223 million pounds, according to Revolut's accounts. The fintech company expects to publish its 2022 accounts by June, but it might take longer.

Revolut, the London-based fintech firm, has posted its first annual profit after missing multiple deadlines to release its financials. Financial technology giant Revolut reported its first-ever annual profit in 2021, according to financial accounts released Wednesday, as subscriptions to its paid packages and overall usage of its app grew sharply. The company reported revenues of £636.2 million ($767.1 million) for the year, three times what it made the previous year, and swung to a pre-tax profit of £59.1 million. In 2020, Revolut recorded a pre-tax loss of £205 million. Klarna, the Swedish buy now, pay later fintech, saw its valuation plunge 85% to $6.7 billion last year. On Tuesday, the firm posted a record $1 billion loss in its 2022 fiscal year.
Owners of crypto assets that use a "proof-of-stake" blockchain can stake some of their assets to potentially take part in the process of validating transactions. In exchange for their work, validators get transaction fees and/or newly created crypto assets. Lawmakers have stepped up calls for regulation after crypto firms' customers were left with large losses. Revolut said customers' staked funds would be held with "trusted custodians" but did not specify who these custodians were. Asked how the firm established the trustworthiness of the custodians, a spokesperson told Reuters that Revolut completed its own due diligence.
LONDON, Jan 13 (Reuters) - Fintech firm Revolut Ltd. is close to finalising its long-overdue 2021 financial accounts, a move that could pave the way for the start-up to obtain a UK banking licence, two people with knowledge of the matter told Reuters. Revolut is set to publish financial accounts for the year ended December 2021 - which were due last summer - at the end of January after auditing firm BDO LLP’s final sign-off, the people said. The Revolut filing will likely show a rise in 2021 revenue from clients’ subscriptions and exchange rate fees, the person said. The accounts may help the entrepreneur to convince UK regulators that Revolut is ready for a banking licence after a two-year wait. Britain is a key market for Revolut, which aims to become a global financial firm.
